Snowed in Farm House - A Work in Progress

The temperature today is fairly mild at 23F (-5C) but I was not impressed with the 7" (12.7cm) of snow on the ground.

I lightly sketched in the farm house and the hills in the background.

With a mixture of French ultramarine blue and Antwerp blue I indicated some of the shadows falling across the snow in the foreground.

Using the shadow colour I added a small amount of burnt sienna and applied the under coat of paint for the background hills.

For each layer of the hills I gradually added more of the blues and the burnt sienna to darken the colour on each layer of the trees.

I will post this painting at a later date once I have completed the background and started work on the farm house.

Chemong Lake VI and VII - Two Works in Progress

Today I didn't have a lot of time to work on my art, but as I looked through my sketch books I came across these two drawings that I started last month (see post 02 September 2019), when Ron and I were out on Chemong Lake.

The buildings needed to be straightened and have more details added.

Chemong Lake VI

Time passed quickly and before long it was time for me to go to an appointment.

Chemong Lake VII

I will post each of these drawings at a later date once more work on them has been completed.

ACEO - Garden Shed 2

Today is the first day of the Creative Hands on Festival and Lois Shaw, Jewell Allington and I were the artists displaying our art work and representing KAGS.

It is being held on the lower level of the Peterborough Square from 13-15 September 2019 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

In between showing people how to paint pine trees in watercolour I worked on this painting that I had started a number of years ago while painting with the KAGS Outdoor Painters' Group on location (see posts on 16 May 2016, 29 May and 19 October 2017).

By the end of the day three people went home with lovely little watercolour paintings of pine trees.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

Old Cottage II

Winter just doesn't want to leave, but with the high today of 54F (12C) the snow we received yesterday should soon be gone.

I thought that I would like to finish this drawing that I started a number of years ago (see posts on 14 July 2013, 31 May 2016 and 18 January 2018).

The only thing that was left to do on this picture was to add the shading into the interior of the building showing in the open doorway of the cottage.

This original 7" x 9” pen and ink drawing when framed will be available for $150.00.

ACEO - The Road Home 3

Today I wanted to work on this painting that I had started a couple of years ago (see posts on 25 November 2017 and 23 February 2018).

I started in the background and painted the buildings on the distant hill.

From there I used mixtures of cadmium red and cadmium yellow and applied the maple leaves on the trees with a sponge.

Next I painted in the three birch trees using burnt sienna and raw sienna on some areas of the trunks, followed by adding the dark markings on the tree with a mixture of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

With washes of burnt sienna I painted in the road followed by a wash of the blue in some areas for the shadows.

Using various mixtures of French ultramarine blue, Antwerp blue, raw sienna, new gamboge and aureolin I painted in the grasses and growies  on the land on both sides of the road.

Lastly, I used lemon yellow and put on the birch tree leaves and scattered a few fallen leaves onto the road

Cabin Memories 2 and 3

Today I was at KAGS sitting the On the Move exhibition and while I was there I thought I would do a couple of drawings to pass the time in between visitors.

I thought for a change I would draw some buildings set into a landscape, at the edge of a clearing or in a sheltered area at the edge of a forest.

Cabin Memories 2

For my first drawing I started by putting in a large building on the right side of the paper and then added a few large trees in behind.

It was at this point that I changed the building into an abandoned, run down  building.

On the left side I put a fence in the distance as well as a fence that was falling down, running out from the left side of the building.

Cabin Memories 3

On my second drawing I put the building a little further back and on the right side of the paper and set it at the edge of a forest.

Next I put in a few birch trees on the left side of the drawing.

After looking at both drawings I thought it would be nice to have them both as night scenes and added a full moon into the sky on the left side.

Old Shed I - A Work in Progress

Today I was in the mood to draw and I pulled out this sketch that I did a number of years ago (see posts on 13 July 2013 and 03 March 2017) when I was on a paint out with the KAGS Outdoor Painters' Group.

I started with putting the boards on the right side of the shed door and then added more leaves to the climbing vine on the building.

From there I finished the large upright board leaning against the side of the shed.

I wasn't happy with the way the shed looked and I decided to extend the roof and length of the building.

Next I added another barrel on the left side of the boards leaning against the wall.

Perhaps I will add another window and put a door in the open space on the building and I will post this drawing at a later time once I have finished more of the building.

Wind Damage

So far this year we have had quite a few Meteorological Alerts and Warnings from Environment Canada; and today we are having another batch.

We are under a severe  thunderstorm warning, a severe wind warning with the wind speeds to reach 55-60mph (90-100km) and a severe rain warning with another 3/8" (10mm) and the temperature to reach 70F (21C).

It was overcast and fairly calm until around noon and then the wind started to pick up, the thunderstorm rolled in bringing the rain.

With all this going on, we also lost power a number of times during the course of the day and into the evening.

At the end of the storm more branches came down from the willow tree, a few of the pine trees lost the top branches and the maple in front of the house also lost a few more branches.

The maple tree at the back of the house lost a large limb and the old apple tree along the fence line had its trunk snapped in half.

The south walls on the east and west barns took  a major hit with the west barn losing eight boards and the east barn losing more than ten boards and the wind breaking one of the doors.

Although, the damage could have been a lot worse than what happened.

Abandoned House I

Today we had mixed precipitation coming down with the temperature at 41F (5C) and the wind chill making it feel like 30F (-1C) so I decided to stay home and finish this drawing that I have been working on for a very long time (see posts on 18 Jun 2013, 20 March and 29 July 2016, 14 January and 15 May 2017).

I started by putting in the tar paper on the roof of the building that was held in place with wood strapping.

From there I worked on putting the shadows on the stones that made up the front of the building.

Lastly, I put in the stones on the shadowed side of the building to complete my drawing.

This original 6" x 9” pen and ink drawing, when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $50.00.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

The Road Home 3 - A Work in Progress

Today is going to be an interesting day weather wise. We are under a Meteorological Alert with a freezing rain warning for this morning and the freezing rain to change to rain later in the day as the temperature makes it to 43F (6C).

I made sure I filled the feeders and put plenty of cracked corn on the ground as the red winged blackbirds have arrived from the south, and it helps to have them well fed to survive the freezing rain, just in case it doesn't change to rain later.

I started by putting in the sky using French ultramarine blue with just a touch of burnt sienna to grey it slightly; being careful to leave areas of white paper for the clouds.

Next I added a little bit of raw sienna to the sky colour for a yellow green and put in the distant field. I then added in a little more blue to darken the green and painted in the pine trees.

I added a little bit of burnt sienna to the green to create a dark for some of the maple tree trunks and dead pine trees.

I will post this painting at a later date once more work on it has been completed.

ACEO - Long Shadows 1-3

After the 8" (20.3cm) of snow we had yesterday on top of all the previous snowy days we have had over the last week, I wasn't surprised to see a pair of snow buntings arrive for the cracked corn I put out for the small birds.

With a lot more snow in the forecast over the coming week I know that I will have a lot more flocks of snow buntings coming to visit.

I thought it would be a good day to work on a few paintings of snow scenes, so I pulled out these three that I had started quite a while ago (see posts on 30 November 2013 and 18 December 2016).

Long Shadows 1

I decided that I would work on all three of these pieces at the same time and began by painting in the tree trunks with various mixtures of burnt sienna and French ultramarine blue as well as the building in the background.

Next I mixed the shadow colour of Antwerp blue and French ultramarine blue and put in the shadows across the snow being sure to follow the depressions in the snow to create interest.

Long Shadows 2

Using raw sienna, burnt sienna, alizarin crimson and new gamboge I put in the dead grasses, growies and leaves at the base of the trees, peeking out of some of the snow drifts and in some of the branches.

Lastly, I added a few pine trees into the background using raw sienna and Antwerp blue.

Long Shadows 3

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here are all original watercolour paintings using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. They are priced at $20.00 each and sold unframed.

Old Cottage II - A Work in Progress

I pulled this drawing out that I started quite a while ago (see posts on 14 July 2013 and 31 May 2016) while at a paint out with the KAGS Outdoor Painters' Group.

After looking at the drawing I decided that I didn't want to put in the wheelbarrow leaning against the building and I put in the wooden boards across on that side of the building.

From there I added the grasses and growies at the base of the larger part of the building as well as putting the climber going up the side of the building.

I put the shadows beneath the eaves on both sections of the building.

Next I darkened in the broken window on the smaller section of the building.

I will post this drawing at a later date once more work on it has been completed.

Winter Buildings II - A Work in Progress

Today I wanted to do some work on this drawing that I had started a number of years ago (see post on 04 November 2013).

I started working on the wind bent pine tree on the left side of the building and thickened the tree trunk, added a few more branches and some pine needles.

I found this building interesting in that the roof on the one side of the building extended further out and was lower than the back part of the building.

The roof also, had a dip almost in the middle with both peaks higher on the ends.

The back part of the building was set back from the front part and it extended further out on the far side which, unless you walked around the building you wouldn't know.

I worked on the back part of the building and added the dip in the back part of the roof near the peak.

I will post this drawing at a later date once I have completed more of the building.

The Road Home 3

Today is overcast; with a mild temperature of 45F (7C) and showers throughout the day are in the forecast.

On the way home I was on one of the back roads and came across one of the long driveway leading up to a farmhouse off in the distance. I stopped the car and did this little drawing of the driveway leading to the house.

What I liked about this scene were the three birch trees at the side of the road and how their white bark and black markings were outlined against the cloudy sky and also how the road disappeared into nothing only to reappear further in the distance.

This drawing could be developed into a larger painting at a later date.

Winter Building I - A Work in Progress

Today I wanted to do some work on this drawing that I had started a number of years ago (see post on 02 November 2013).

I started with the first drawing and began on the addition on the right side of the building and put a chimney onto the roof.

Next, I straightened the sides of the building and the roof edge. I decided to make it a tin roof instead of shingles. Then I put a heavy blanket of snow on the top of the roof.

From there I moved to the front of the main section of the building and straightened up the walls and the peak of the house. I moved the chimney a little further back from the peak and added the brick work.

I added another window on the lower level, squared up the windows and added the window frames.

I will post this drawing at a later date once I have completed the main building and the porch.

Abandoned House I - A Work in Progress

Today I have to go to P.R.H.C. and get the results of my bone density scan.

While I was waiting for Christine to come and take me to the hospital I thought I would like to do a little more work on this drawing that I had started a few years ago (see posts on 18 Jun 2013, 20 March and 29 July 2016 and 14 January 2017).

I started by putting in the mortar around the stones on the walls of the house.

As I finished indicating the last stone in the wall Christine arrived. I will post this drawing at a later date once I have inked in the stones.

Buildings I

Yes it is snowing! Overnight we received 2" (5.1cm) of heavy packing snow with the temperature in the morning being 30F (-1C) and the wind chill making it feel like 28F (-2C).

For the rest of the day we are going to have mixed precipitation of rain and snow. We will see how much of this white stuff will remain on the ground.

I thought I would work on this drawing today, that I had started a number of years ago (see post on 14 August 2013).

First I worked on the buildings, adding shingles, tiles or metal onto the roofs; as well as a couple of chimneys onto the main building.

Next put on the boards and siding on the various buildings, followed by the windows and doors.

Then it was time to start putting in the background trees and bushes behind the buildings and adding a little smoke coming out from one of the chimneys on the main building.

I put in the horizon line on the lake; and then on the shoreline I added in some grasses and growies on the bank and water ripples below and into the lake.

This original 4-1/4" x 9” pen and ink drawing when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $40.00.

Street Scene III - A Work in Progress

Today I thought I would work on this sketch that I started a number of years ago (see post on 19 June 2013).

I started on the building on the left side of the road and gave some definition to the outside walls and the roof.

From there I went to the building at the far end of the road and worked on the roof and added a window and a set of double doors.

On the right side of the street I straightened the hitching post in front of the building.

Christine came in to visit me and make sure I had everything I needed before she would have to leave for work.

I will post this drawing at a later date once more work is completed on the buildings.

Thank you for looking at may artwork.

Stone House - A Work in Progress

I wanted to do something today so I thought I would work on this piece that I had started a number of years ago (see post on 21 June 2013).

I wanted to get the large oak tree in the front of the drawing completed.

After working on the drawing and finally finishing the tree I decided I need to take a break before starting work on the house.

That was a big mistake. When I reached for my cup, I accidentally knocked it over.

I ended up spilling tea over the right side of the paper.

I have cropped off the ruined sections ans when I decide what I am going to do with it, I will post this drawing at a later date.
