ACEO - Shoreline 3

I had started this is a little painting last year while I was out near Fenelon Falls and finally decided to finish it.

There is a big auction in Peterborough today that we are going to attend. It should be interesting.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Windsor & Newton paint on 300lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

Eternity – A Work in Progress

For this painting the paper was soaked in water and then set aside to dry until the sheen was gone. While waiting French ultramarine blue, raw sienna and alizarin crimson were mixed in individual cups.

When the paper was ready each of the colours were poured onto the paper in different areas, some overlapping, some left with just one colour.

Using a tissue, paint was lifted from the top edges of some of the clouds as though they were touched by the rising sun.

Once the paper was still slightly damp a mixture of burnt sienna with a little bit of French ultramarine blue was used to paint in a distant tree line. The bottom edges of the trees were softened with water to give the effect of mist rising around them.

When the paper was completely dry I used a razor blade to lift the sparkle off the surface of the water where the sun strikes it.

I will post this painting at a later date when I complete more of the painting.

Thank you for looking at my artwork.

Winter Song

This is an original 9" x 12” framed watercolour and is available for $210.00.

Today they are still calling for rain, but it still isn't raining; I guess if they keep saying it will rain eventually it will happen.

For this painting I used a new colour, Naples yellow. I applied a thin wash into the snow and used a darker, thicker wash into the sky as an under paint. It gives a different feel to the painting than when I use raw sienna.

Now I have to go to Kawartha Downs and pick up a harness for my colt. We are going to start breaking him to drive this weekend.

Serenity

Today is going to be another hot and humid day; although they are calling for rain overnight I will believe it only when I see it.

For this painting I applied each colour as a glaze and allowed it to dry before the next layer was applied.

The rocks and some of the dead trees were scraped out using a palette knife while the paint was still wet.

This is an original 5" x 6-1/2” framed watercolour available for $115.00.

Reflections

First thing in the morning while the skies were still threatening more rain, the lake was dead calm. The still glass like surface reflected the sky, and surrounding landscape in a mirror image.

Then the wind came up and sent white capped waves rushing across the lake to the shore. We didn't get any more rain, but the cool, refreshing breeze was welcome after the humidity and heat of the previous week.

This is an original 6-1/2" x 10” matted and shrink-wrapped watercolour.

Thank you to new collector Ms. Suzanne C. Brown of Oakville, Ontario on her purchase of this painting.

Toby

This is the second of two sketches I did at a dog show of a pair of Wire-Haired Fox Terriers (see posting on 01 March 2011 of Tammy).

For this one I used black, white and sanguine conte allowing the colour of the paper to show through for the lighter areas of the coat.

Toby is an original 7” diameter framed conte pencil drawing available for $85.00.

Soaring

It is so very nice to finally have rain and with it the end of the high temperatures and humidity even if it is only for a short time.

On a trip to the dump I made sketches of the gulls that scavenge for food there and decided that a rocky shore would be a nicer location for them.

This is an original 5" x 7” framed watercolour.

Congratulations to Mrs. Valerie Dunford of Lakefield, Ontario on adding this painting to her collection.

Sundown 4

Sundown 4 is an original 2" x 4” framed watercolour available for $65.00.

This is a small painting using a graded wash of burnt sienna for the sky.

Mixtures of raw sienna, French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna were used in painting the trees.

I added a few flying birds into the sky to add some interest.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork.

Quiet Morning

This is an original 5" x 8-1/2” framed watercolour painting.

Early morning on the lake is usually a time of peace and quiet. The glass like water reflects everything back like a mirror. There is hardly any movement on the lake other than a tiny ripple as a bird swims silently leaving its mark for a few seconds of time.

Thank you to returning collectors Mr. & Mrs. Maurice Strong of Lakefield, Ontario on their purchase of this painting.

Aurora 1

The paper was wet with water and using Antwerp blue I put down vertical strokes across the paper leaving a few areas without paint.

While the paper and paint were still wet I applied alizarin crimson in the centre of the picture overlapping some of the Antwerp blue and the white paper allowing the paint to blend on its own.

With the paper still wet raw sienna was applied to the left side leaving some areas of the Antwerp blue and alizarin crimson untouched.

The painting was then left to dry completely before the trees were painted in using French ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and raw sienna.

This little gem is an original 2-1/2" x 3-1/4” framed watercolour available for $65.00. SOLD

Canadian Winter

I came across a copy of the 1986 January/February issue Horse Sense magazine and it brings back a lot of memories of firsts in my life, as well as how many things have changed over the last 25 years.

It was the first full sheet (22" x 30" (55 x 76cm)) watercolour painting I had completed.

It was the first colour painting that was accepted for a magazine cover.

It was the first original painting in the art collection of Mr. and Mrs. Don Kortko of Pefferlaw, Ontario.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

OSWOA - Moonlit Pine 1

Every day I see the one pine tree standing all alone on the hill toward the back of the property. It looks so lonely, having been with its twin for well over a century.

I have painted the two pines with a full moon before and I thought I would paint the lone survivor of the storm on a bright moonlit night.

If you would like more information about OSWOA please go to my post on 12 March 2010.

The OSWOA shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Windsor & Newton paint on 300lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $40.00 and sold unframed.

Heading Out

Today is the second day of the art show at Settler's Village in Bobcaygeon. Fortunately the schoolhouse has a number of doors and windows that can be left open to catch any breeze which helps to keep things a little cooler.

This is a small 5" x 7” framed watercolour that I had started in a workshop with Andres Bohecker, who is a well known seascape artist from British Columbia.

Thank you to returning collectors Mr. & Mrs. Don Kortkos of Pefferlaw, Ontario on their selection of this painting.

I would also like to thank new collector Ms. Leah Nord of Toronto on her purchase of Perfectly Purple.

Winter Afternoon

This is an original 14" x 18” framed acrylic.

Today is the first day of the Bobcaygeon Fine Art Festival at Settler's Village in Bobcaygeon. I will be in the Schoolhouse with Tom Young.

Congratulations to Mrs. Carol Hollingsworth of Peterborough, Ontario on her selection of this painting for her collection.

Please excuse the poor quality of the photograph but it was taken quickly inside the building before it left.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork and I hope to see some of you at the show this weekend.

Winter Solo - A Work in Progress

We could use some rain, but there is none in the forecast until Monday at the earliest.

They did call for a cool and rainy spring which we did get as well as a very hot and dry summer. It seems that they are going to be right. So I have started another winter painting, which I will probably work on over the weekend at the Bobcaygeon show.

Now I had better get the truck loaded and go set up the art show. I hope to see some of you there this weekend.

Sand and Surf - A Work in Progress

Today is going to be another hot and humid day; what better way to spend it then by the lake?

I painted in the water using French ultramarine blue and Antwerp blue. Using a tissue I lifted some areas for the white caps on the tops of the waves.

I will post this painting at a later date when it is completed.

Open Water

This is an original 6-1/2" x 14-1/2” framed watercolour.

While the land is still covered with snow, spring is on its way as patches of water show through the frozen lake.

Thank you to returning collector Ms. Christine Wilson of Bobcaygeon, Ontario on her selection of this painting for her art collection.

Winter Playground

When my daughter, Christine was very young her best friend was one of my neighbour's children Tim Dunford.

He was always very patient and looked after her much like an older brother would take care of a baby sister.

This painting is a result of some of those memories of them tobogganing down the big front hill, and I will at a later date paint some of them when she was learning how to skate, and them going trick or treating in their costumes.

Thank you to returning collectors the English Catholic School Association, (Mr. Joseph DiProfio) of North Bay, Ontario on their purchase of this painting.

Daffodils - A Work in Progress

This is a small 4" x 6" painting that I worked on with live flowers.

The only drawback to this is that as the day progresses the flowers open more and change slightly.

With the one daffodil almost completely finished I decided to add a dark background in behind it to see how it would look.

I will post this once I have completed more on the painting.

Summer Afternoon

This is an original 9" x 12” framed watercolour available for $180.00.

This is a scene that we often see when we are out on the lakes. The beautiful pink granite rocks reflected back into the water near the calm shoreline on a hot summer afternoon.

This original 9" x 12” framed, watercolour was donated to the Trent University, Teacher’s Trust Fund.

Philrick Star

Philrick Star was a Standardbred mare by the grey stallion Futurity Chief out of Star Adios C, an Adios granddaughter. She was never raced, but did compete in western pleasure, trail and reining classes.

As a broodmare produced two colts, Star Holder by Title Holder who raced as a 3 year old and was later used as a field hunter.

Star Skipper by Kawartha Skipper who just before he was due to start his racing career as a 2 year old had an unfortunate accident which ended any chance of racing. When he recovered he became a favourite school horse at a summer camp.

This is an original 18" x 24” framed conte drawing and is available for $350.00.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork.

Spring Bouquet

This is an original 7-1/2" x 10-1/2” framed watercolour painting.

I remember when my daughter, Christine was little would go out into the fields and bring me a bouquet of the weeds and wild flowers she would find.

Thank you to Mrs. Marsha Rennie of Lakefield, Ontario on her selection of this painting for her art collection.

I am now going to head out to paint with the Outdoor Painters' Group.

Whispering Waters - A Work in Progress

This is another painting I started from Neil Broadfoot's workshop last year ( see postings on 20 September 2010, 04 October 2010 and 18 October 2010).

The sky, background trees and water has been completed. The masking tape has been removed from the foreground and a small amount of the water rushing over Burleigh Falls has been indicated.

I will post this painting again once it is completed.

Snowy Day

This morning I was at KAGS at the Life Drawing class and Katherine was back as our model. If you would like to view the sketches I did of her, please go to my Life Drawing Portfolio.

This is an original 5" x 7" framed watercolour.

Yesterday was very hot, hazy and humid; today is supposed to be more of the same. So to try and cool things down a little I thought a snow scene would be nice.

Thank you to returning collector Mrs. Betty Shewchuk of Bethany, Ontario on her purchase of this painting.

OSWOA - Maple Tree 1

This is another of the paintings I completed at the Norwood Art Show over the weekend.
