Pine Tree 1 - A Work in Progress

One of my favourite things to see are pine trees silhouetted against the sky.

For as long as I have owned the property there was a pair of tall stately pines entwined together on the top of the hill on one of the back fields.

Unfortunately during in windstorm in July of last year one of them was no longer able to withstand the high winds and fell, leaving its companion standing all alone.

It seems so forlorn now. I started this painting of it from the opposite side than I see from the house.

I will post this painting at a later date once It is completed.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork. I hope you will return often.

Morning Star - A Work in Progress

The background for the Morning Star wreck is an almost flat blue wash.

I will post this painting at a later date once I have transferred the sketch of the Morning Star from Aruba.

Waiting at the Gate - A Work in Progress

This is a sketch for another foal painting. It is of the time when the horses are all standing around by the gate to be brought into the barn for their evening meal.

I need to change the head on the foal as he looks a little jug headed, and I have to work out how I will put in the gate rails and fence posts.

I will post this sketch at a later date once it is ready to be transferred to the watercolour paper.

Mr. Bud - A Work in Progress

This is the under painting for the Mr. Bud wreck in Roatan. It is a 75ft (22.9m) conch boat that was sunk intentionally in 1995 as a dive site.

The Mr. Bud wreck lies in approximately 40ft (12.2m) of water in a wide, shallow sandy trench and is suitable for all divers.

I will post this painting at a later date once I have transferred the image of the "Bud" onto the canvas.

Trophy Table - A Work in Progress

Today I brought in to KAGS the things for the Still Life class. Our theme was Riding and I brought in a wide variety of subject matter including two saddles, a number of bridles, tack cleaning supplies, grooming equipment, helmets, ribbons and trophies.

I chose to do the trophies and ribbons. I wanted to capture the reflections in the polished metal of the trophies as they gleamed beneath the spotlights.

As I finish more on this painting I will post it at a later date.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork.

Silent World - A Work in Progress

I am applying to The Lindsay Art Gallery to have a show there with fellow artist Carol Rutherford.

The show will be called "Above and Below the Reef" and will feature the landscape and people of the Caribbean as well as the wrecks and creatures that inhabit the reef below the surface of the water.

This is the under painting for one of the coral reefs that I took photographs of while I was in Roatan last year.

I will post this painting at a later date once more of the painting has been completed.

Northern Lights - A Work in Progress

It was a busy day at KAGS with many people coming through the gallery. I didn't have very much time to work in this painting (see post on 09 December 2010).

Using a mixture of French ultramarine blue, Antwerp blue and burnt sienna I painted in the sky using a dry brush and leaving areas of colour showing through for the Northern Lights.

Once I have completed more work on it I will post it at a later date.

Mailbox 2 - A Work in Progress

Living in the country mailboxes at the end of the driveway are common.

Recently a number of us had to move our mailboxes due to new government regulations put in effect. It doesn't matter that the mailbox has been in the same place long before I moved here 34 years ago with never any problems.

So now instead of being just across the road, I have to walk down the very steep front hill to get my mail and then trudge back up it, that is if I feel like getting my exercise for the day.

I will post this painting at a later date once more of it is completed.

Tree Tops 5 - A Work in Progress

First I masked a couple of areas with liquid friskit and let it dry.

I started by painting in the sky and then sprinkling salt into the wet paint to create "snowflakes".

Once the paper was dry, I painted in some trees around the frisket and after the paint was dry I removed the masking.

There is a little more that will need to be done before this painting is finished and I will post it at a later date.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

More Computer Problems

Sometimes I could really get to hate computers. But I have it back now and hopefully I will not have any more problems with it.

Thank you for your patience.

Take Time To... - A Work in Progress

Foals will often stop and take a long look at something new and different. In this case a foal about to scratch and itchy ear and noticing the opening and closing of the brightly coloured wings of a Monarch butterfly feasting on a flower.

I transferred the image of the foal, drew in a butterfly and some leaves that are against the sky and masked them out with liquid frisket.

I set this painting aside and I will post this painting at a later date once some of the painting has been completed.

Gardening - A Work in Progress

We had another large selection of items for the theme of Gardening for our Still Life class at KAGS today and again the class was well attended.

Gail brought in a large assortment of decorative bird houses, gardening tools, hats, packets of seeds and some spring flowers in pots.

I chose one section with an interesting bird house, and a small ceramic nesting bird.

I will post this at a later date after I work on it again.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork.

Grey Skies - Two Works in Progress

Today I worked on preparing a couple of backgrounds for snow scenes, even though there hasn't been much snow on the ground this year to inspire them.

Grey Sky 1

For the first one I used a flat wash of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

Grey Sky 2

For the second one I used the same colours but slightly paler and added a little alizarin crimson to make it seem like an early morning sky.

These paintings will be posted at a later date.

Shades of Autumn - A Work in Progress

This is a painting I started a while ago and it seems that I take it out once a year to work on again (see posts on 12 December 10 and 13 January 11).

I decided that it was time to start working on some of the foreground trees. I managed to get one tree almost completed when I had unexpected company arrive.

Hopefully, this time it won't be next year before I can get back to working on this painting again. It just needs a little more detail on the rock face and another foreground tree or two to complete the painting.

I will post it at a later date.

Barron Canyon - A Work in Progress

I am gradually working on paintings for the show at the Visitors' Centre in Algonquin Park later this year. This one is a painting of a section of the Barron Canyon.

There are two ways to enjoy the Barron Canyon. If you enjoy hiking you can take the approximately 1 mile (1.5 km) loop called the Barron Canyon Trail that takes you along the top of the north rim of the breath taking, 328 foot (100m) high Barron Canyon before returning to the parking lot.

The other way is by canoe, which can be accessed from either the Bingham Lake Parking Lot and/or the Barron River Parking Lot. Viewing from the water and looking up the Barron Canyon walls takes on a whole new perspective.

Regardless whether one is standing and looking over the unfenced cliff's edge downward or those in canoes looking up, people will appear tiny against the magnificence of the Barron Canyon walls.

Once I have completed more work on this painting I will post it at a later date.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork. I hope you will return often.

Queen Conch - A Work in Progress

With the theme for yesterday's Still Life class being things that could be found on a beach; I decided that I would like to work on one of the Queen Conch shells that I have in my collection.

I think it is fitting that I continue to do more work using items that could be found in the Caribbean, especially since I am in the process of making a submission to The Lindsay Art Gallery to have a show there next year with Carol Rutherford. The show will be called "Above and Below the Reef".

I will post this painting at a later date once it is completed.

On the Beach - A Work in Progress

Today it was my turn to bring in the subject matter for the Still Life class at KAGS and the theme was the Beach.

With having visited various islands in the Caribbean I had many things to bring in that could be found on almost any beach. A wide variety of seashells, a sand crab, colourful beach cover ups, floppy brimmed sunhats, tanning oils, sunscreen, seagulls, a treasure chest filled with beach jewellery and even a bottle of rum.

It was a good thing that the display was set up to allow people to go completely around the table rather than putting up a backdrop and having the people crowded together with just one side being available.

Today we had the largest number of artists attend the Still Life class ever. It was nice to see more people taking an interest once they found that it was a lot of different themes rather than just traditional still life.

I did a sketch of one corner of the display complete with seagull, beach hat, cover up and of course a bottle of rum.

As I complete more of this painting I will post it at a later date.

I have put in the staring lines and will post it at a later date when I have more of it finished.

Christmas Ornaments - A Work in Progress

Today Tom Young one of the members of the Buckhorn Artists' Group gave a demonstration to the Buckhorn Tuesday Painting Group. He had asked all of us to bring in a couple of glass Christmas ornaments for the class.

He brought in six ornaments that he had hanging in an old wooden window frame. It was a lovely way of displaying the different Christmas ornaments.

It was a very interesting class. Tom showed the basics of painting glass Christmas ornaments and how to attain the look of roundness. He stressed the importance of the way the reflections are distorted and curve around the spherical ornament.

I had originally sketched out six different ornaments, but some of the other members of the Group had brought in extra ornaments that were different from the ones Tom had so I added a couple more for variety.

I chose to start with a small solid green ornament working to achieve the roundness as well as put in the curved reflections.

My painting of the first ornament seems a little lop sided and I will have to fix it up. A couple of the other ornaments also need to be made more balanced, which I will correct before I paint them.

I will post this again when I have completed more of the ornaments.

Lean To I

This is another of the local barns in Smith Township.

One day I would like to do a series of large paintings (see posting on 02 February 2010) of the many local barns.

Lean To I is an original 3" x 5" pen and ink which when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $25.00.

Reflected Trees 2 - A Work in Progress

Today I just couldn't get into painting so I played with my two most used colours, French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

I washed in the sky and then started painting in some dark trees, which just weren't working.

So I turned it upside down and lifted some lines of white from the painting to make it look like the trees were reflected into water.

I am going to put a duck swimming in the water. I will post this painting again once it is completed.

Fishing Gear - A Work in Progress

Today Bob brought in his fly fishing gear for our Still Life class at KAGS.

After completing my sketch I blocked in the base colours of the creel (wicker basket for carrying fish) and the wooden of the handle of the fish net with raw sienna and burnt sienna. Then using pure burnt sienna I did the under painting of the hip waders.

I made a fair amount of progress in the three hours I had to work on the piece. I will post this painting at a later date once I have finished more on it, but I am not looking forward to painting the wicker work on the creel.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

OSWOA - Overgrown Field 1

Often while driving through the country you will come across many farms that are no longer being worked and the fields are left to become overgrown with weeds. The barns are run down and falling apart soon to collapse and disappear forever.

If you would like more information about OSWOA please go to my post on 12 March 2010.

The OSWOA shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Windsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $30.00 and sold unframed.
