Cold Comfort

This is a small square 4-3/4" x 4-3/4” original, framed watercolour for $75.00.

It is early morning with the rosy tint of dawn causing the trees to cast long shadows over the snow. The large white pines like sentinels clothed in green needles stand bravely, sometimes bent but not broken against the elements of Winter.

I have just received confirmation that both paintings, Aurora Borealis (see post on 04 April 2010) and Pristine Beauty (see post on 13 June 2010) I submitted to The Lindsay Gallery for their Annual Juried Show of Fine Arts/Visual Arts have been accepted and my painting Aurora Borealis received an Honourable Mention Award.

The juror was Susan Holland, Curator of The John M. Parrott Art Gallery, Belleville, Ontario.

The Opening Reception is on Thursday, 08 July from 7-8:30pm. The exhibition runs from 02-30 July 2010.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Blue Shadows

With living on the top of a hill I often see the trees lined up along the top ridge of a hill, their shadows race downhill like blue grey toboggans leaving a trail in the snow.

This original 7-1/4" x 7-1/2” framed watercolour is available for $165.00.

Today I have to take two paintings over to The Lindsay Gallery for their Annual Juried Show of Fine Arts/Visual Arts.

Birch Bark

This is a small original 3-1/2" x 4” framed watercolour for $95.00.

This is another of the scenes I came across while driving along the roads. I will often pull over to the side and either sketch (if I have the time) and/or take a photograph as reference for later when I wish to paint.

Gateway 1

This is a scene I came across last winter while out driving along the road to visit a friend.

It looks as though I am on a winter painting spree as I have three other snow scenes started that I will complete and post over the next couple of days.

This is an original 3-1/4" x 5-1/4” framed watercolour for $95.00.

Snow Shadows

This is a small original 3-1/2" x 6-1/2”  framed watercolour available for $85.00.

I enjoy painting snow scenes, and the way the shadows trace their way across the snow covered ground.

Today I have three shows to take down; the one at Griffin's Greenhouse where I am demonstrating at today which closes at 4:00pm, the Norwood 2nd Annual Art Show and Sale which closes at 5:00pm and "On the Small Side" at the Sasquatch Gallery in Keene which closes at 6:00pm. It looks like it will be a busy day for me.

Thank you for looking at my artwork.

Pretty Pansies 1

This morning I demonstrated from 10:00am until 1:00 pm at Griffin's Greenhouse, 3026 Lakefield Rd. (formerly Hwy. 28) for the "Art in the Garden Show". The Peterborough and Area GardenRoute is hosting this event at all of the ten member businesses from 10am to 4pm.

While I was there I completed this little original, 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" watercolour which is available for $20.00 unframed.

Members of the Kawartha Artists' Gallery will be at the locations showing and demonstrating their art. By following the link you can also see at which locations some of the members from the Buckhorn Artists' Group will be displaying their work.

It is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy beautiful art while visiting spectacular floral displays when all the gardens are in full bloom.

This afternoon I demonstrated for the last time at the Norwood 2nd Annual Art Show and Sale at the Norwood Legion Hall - Branch 300, Corner of Alma and King Street, Norwood, Ontario.

The show runs from the 22-26 June and is open daily from 2-5pm. Tomorrow Helen Sheppard will be sitting the show for me.

Ghost Pine

In this piece I was working with various components to bring them together in one painting.

I wanted to have the silvery white trunk of a dead pine silhouetted against a stormy sky, but I also wanted to have a lake with a rocky shore and reflections in the water, as well as the yellowed grasses that are so common at the end of the summer.

I am pleased with the way everything went together in this tall format.

This is an original, framed 5" x 12-1/2” watercolour available for $225.00.

Today is also a fairly busy day for me in that I have demonstrated again at the Norwood 2nd Annual Art Show and Sale at the Norwood Legion Hall - Branch 300, Corner of Alma and King Street, Norwood, Ontario.

The show runs from the 22-26 June and is open daily from 2-5pm.

Then went to get my paintings from the "Spring into Summer" show at the KAGS and was informed that I had sold a painting just prior to the closing of the show.

I would like to thank new collector Ms. Angela Ross of Norwood, Ontario on her purchase of Day's End (see post on 01 June 2010).

Silver Lining

This is an original 4-1/2" x 6-1/2” framed watercolour available for $125.00.

With living on the top of a hill I see the sky around me and each twenty four hour period is new and different, changing throughout the course of the day, no two the same.

They say that every cloud has a silver lining, and it seems that is very true when the sun shines behind them.

I will be demonstrating at the Norwood 2nd Annual Art Show and Sale at the Norwood Legion Hall - Branch 300, Corner of Alma and King Street, in Norwood, Ontario today.

The show runs from the 22-26 June and is open daily from 2-5pm.

Summer Trees

Often my horses are left out at pasture once winter has left and the ground has dried sufficiently after the spring rains that the horses' hooves won't tear up the ground and the grass has established itself for the summer. They will only be brought into the barn for feeding, grooming or to be ridden.

This is an original 5" x 7” framed watercolour and is available for $135.00. SOLD

It is also one of the paintings I have at the Norwood 2nd Annual Art Show and Sale which is being held at the Norwood Legion Hall - Branch 300, Corner of Alma and King Street, Norwood, Ontario. I will also be demonstrating there today.

The show runs from the 22-26 June and is open daily from 2-5pm.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork. I hope you will return often.

OSWOA - Landscape

It is amazing how much a scene changes due to the time of day, or the season in which it is viewed. Here are two paintings of the same location.

The first one is in the early morning in late October with the mist rising as the sun is coming up.While the second one is also in autumn but around November when most of the leaves have fallen, with a storm approaching in the afternoon.

It doesn't have the softness of the morning scene and seems to be a much colder painting.

Changing Season

Now I have to finish loading the car and go to and set up the Norwood 2nd Annual Art Show and Sale at the Norwood Legion Hall - Branch 300, Corner of Alma and King Street, Norwood, Ontario.

I have to have everything ready for the Opening this afternoon from 2:30-5:00pm.

The show runs from the 22-26 June and is open daily from 2-5pm.

ACEO - Ferns 1-3

A few years ago I transplanted a number of trilliums, wild geraniums, Canada violets, a Jack in the pulpit and a couple of ferns to create a wildflower garden at the front of the property.

The wildflowers last such a short time, but the ferns are there until the frost kills them off for the winter. They are such a lovely, delicate looking plant that I enjoy seeing each year.

Ferns 3

I did these three quick sketches of the ferns and may develop them into larger paintings later.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here are all original watercolour paintings using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb.  Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper.

New World

Early afternoon, during the hottest part of the day the air seems to shimmer with the heat. Without a breeze, the lake is calm and tranquil as though mirroring the sun and sky back towards the heavens.

This is an original 4-3/4" x 8” framed watercolour available for $125.00.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork.

Inlet

This is an original 11" x 12-3/4” framed watercolour available for $225.00.

Two children stop at the edge of a high cliff to have their lunch. Looking down from their vantage point, everything below seems so small and unreal, that they are more like toys left scattered about the landscape by a giant's hand.

Evening Sky

The day is drawing to a close, and a recent storm is gradually clearing as the clouds start to break up.

With the colours of the sunset trying to burst through the clouds, it brings the hope that tomorrow will be a sunny day.

Heather's Pine

Today I was at the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio sitting the Spring into Summer show.

While I was there, I worked on this small painting which helped to pass the time on a quiet day.

This is a tree I have painted many times, in various seasons and times of day; I never grow tired of painting it.

Beside the beauty of this tall and stately pine I am usually visiting with my friend and fellow artist Heather Grant, since this tree is on her property.

For this show, it was nice to see a wall with just small paintings hanging together, instead of them getting lost between much larger pieces.

This is an original 5" x 6-3/4” watercolour painting, and when framed will be available for $135.00. SOLD

Day is Done

An original 5-1/4" x 6-1/2” framed watercolour for $125.00.

The winds whips the lose snow around the trees and pushes the clouds across the evening sky. The after glow of the sunset remains for a short time as the sky gradually darkens with the coming of night.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Pristine Beauty

Early March when Winter is gradually losing its tight grip on the season as Spring is trying to bring back the warmth to a frozen land. Rivers and lakes are starting to thaw as ice and snow slowly melt.

It is a peaceful time, a time of reawakening. Very soon the first snowdrops will brave the cold to defiantly show their blooms; a herald to the coming and much welcome change.

This is an original 7-3/4" x 11-1/4” framed watercolour available for $295.00. SOLD

The Mustang

There is so much history about the Plains Indians and their horses, that it would seem that the horse had been there all along. It is hard to believe that it wasn't until Cortez landed in Mexico in 1519 that the horse was re-introduced to North America.

This original 10" x 11-1/2" graphite pencil drawing when framed will be available for $165.00. SOLD

This image will be available as a package of 10 cards complete with envelopes for $8.00.

It will also be available as an 11" x 14" decorator print for $10.00. Prints are shipped flat and unframed..

Forgotten

The days are getting longer and warmer. Soon school will be finished for another year and the children will be off for the summer.

Many of the fields have already been mowed for first cut hay and the cicadas can be heard from the tops of trees. Most of the fencing has been completed for the season but there are a few places were a section of fence may have been forgotten.

This is an original 10-1/4" x 14-1/2” framed watercolour for $295.00.

Winter Bridge 1

It didn't take very much to complete this little painting that I had started in the workshop with Margaret Roseman (see post on 01 May 2010).

I added more growies into the foreground and a suggestion of rock shapes into the bridge.

It is an original 4" x 6" framed watercolour available for $145.00.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork.

Evening Reflections

This is an original 4-3/4" x 6-3/4” watercolour, when framed will be available for $125.00.

The big fluffy clouds touched with the setting sun's glow create a mosiac in the evening sky.

It will be framed this weekend along with a number of other pieces that I need to get ready for upcoming shows at the Norwood Legion Hall - Branch 300 and Griffin's Garden Centre (see post on 02 June 2010 for more information).

Rain Storm

After the days of rain we have had here it was nice to see the sun come out again. Everything seems so much cleaner, greener and brighter.

This is an original 4-1/2" x 6-1/2” framed watercolour and is available for $125.00.

Peaceful Evening 1

This is the other landscape painting I had started in the workshop with Margaret Roseman (see post 01 May 2010.)

The island and trees on the right side of the painting were painted and the water below the island was darkened.Next I added a touch of the brighter green into the tops of the left side trees to complete the painting.

It is an original 4" x 6" framed watercolour available for $145.00.

OSWOA - Buildings

Buildings often add interest to a painting whether they are a part of the background, or the focal point.

I have fourteen sketches of buildings from my class with George Elliott (see posting from 27 April 2010) that I can work into paintings as well as finishing Winter Barns which I had worked on in his class.

If you would like more information about OSWOA please go to my post on 12 March 2010.

ACEO - Birch Song 1-4

Yesterday and today I have been combining two of my favourite things together in some small paintings. My favourite tree which is the birch with my favourite season autumn.

Since I live on the top of a hill I overlook over 600 acres (242ha) of mixed forest (deciduous and coniferous trees) and when the leaves change into their autumn colours the view is breathtaking.

Birch Song 1

Since I have completed four paintings over the last two days, as well as having started another three paintings which are in various stages of completion I think I am doing fairly well with my first 30 day challenge.

Although this is only day three, we will see what I can manage to complete by the end of the month.

Birch Song 2

The ACEO shown here are all original watercolour paintings using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on either 140lb. or 300lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. They are priced at $20.00 each and sold unframed.

Day's End

I often see herons on the lakes and we have one that does occasionally come into the pond at the bottom of the front field. They are easy to miss when they are hunting and will stand motionless for a considerable amount of time while waiting for the chance to catch their prey.

This is an original 4-1/2" x 9-1/4” framed watercolour available for $225.00. SOLD

A number of artists I know are taking part in the 30 day art challenge; which means for each month having 30 days in it they must finish a painting a day.

Here is the first of my daily paintings. I will continue to post the painting I finish each day during the course of the month.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork. I hope you will return often to see the postings.
