Street Scene III - A Work in Progress

Today I thought I would work on this sketch that I started a number of years ago (see post on 19 June 2013).

I started on the building on the left side of the road and gave some definition to the outside walls and the roof.

From there I went to the building at the far end of the road and worked on the roof and added a window and a set of double doors.

On the right side of the street I straightened the hitching post in front of the building.

Christine came in to visit me and make sure I had everything I needed before she would have to leave for work.

I will post this drawing at a later date once more work is completed on the buildings.

Thank you for looking at may artwork.

Backyards - A Work in Progress

It is a nice mild day with the temperature at 47F (8.3C) and the ice on the driveway starting to melt.

We are having the second to last workshop with Lucy Manley and are going to do a street scene on black canvas using a mosaic style of painting.

I was supposed to do a painting last year (see post on 19 October 2015) but was unable to start painting in that style as I had to leave early.

I already had a couple of canvases painted black and used this one called Background 52 (see post on 21 October 2015) from that workshop.

The outlines of the buildings were sketched onto the canvas using cadmium red.

Since the background was already the darkest dark we started the painting with the lightest light, in this case titanium white for the sunlit snow, the white window frames and the clouds.

Adding Cerulean blue to the white for the next lightest colour, the snow and the brightest part of the sky were indicated.

For the next darker colour ultramarine blue as added to the white for the darker area of the sky and the cast shadows in the snow.

The background trees were indicated with various mixtures of cadmium red, cadmium yellow, white and a small amount of alizarin crimson.

Next was to start painting in the various buildings. Using the tree colour and adding a little ultramarine blue to grey the colour, the larger background house was painted and then the shadow under the eaves of the garage, the small area of roof from the house and the smaller shed in front of the garage.

Adding a little more white to the grey a few highlights were added to the larger house and the shadowed side of the garage was painted.

After adding a little more white to the grey mix, the sunlit side of the garage was completed.

Lastly a mix of raw sienna, burnt sienna and white was used to indicate the front of the house across the street on the right side of the painting.

I will post this painting at a later date once I have completed more work on the various buildings.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork.

Walking the Dog - A Work in Progress

It is getting warmer out 21F (-6C) and even though there is a wind making it feel colder 14F (-10C) the sun is shining and the snow is starting to melt. With the warmer temperature it seems as though overnight most of the snow buntings has left and I only have one small flock of about thirty five birds here today. I will miss them when this flock leaves.

Today in the last Lucy Manley class at KAGS and we are going to do a Peterborough street scene.

As usual we under painted the canvas with raw sienna and the buildings were blocked in using cadmium red.

The shadowed side of the buildings were painted, the shadows under the eaves and the windows. Lastly the trees were indicated as well as a person out walking the dog.

Now it was time to start adding colour to the buildings.

On the first building Titanium white mixed with  lemon yellow was put on the sunlit side, then raw sienna was added to the mix for the shadowed side and a hint of red was added to the shadow colour for the cast shadow on the sunlit side as well as the fence on the left side.

The red brick on the next building was cadmium red with a little lemon yellow added. For the shadowed side alizarin crimson was added to the mix with a touch of French ultramarine blue.

Using a mix of French ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson and raw sienna, the windows of the buildings were blocked in as well as the dark shadows under the eaves. A small amount of cerulean blue was added to the mixture and the shadowed side of the front building and the spaces between the fence, on the left side were painted.

More raw sienna and a touch of Titanium white and cadmium red were added to the dark paint and the sunlit side of the front building and the right side fence were added.

Using pure Titanium white the snow was applied to the foreground, the roofs of the buildings, the front top of the brick building and onto the tops of the fence posts and fence.

Cerulean blue was added to the white with a little alizarin crimson for the snow shadows in the foreground and on the shadowed side of the roofs. A little French ultramarine blue was added to the mix and darker shadows were added to the foreground snow and the shadow from the tree was put onto the roof.

Using the shadow colour I added a roof for a small shed on the left side behind the fence and adding a little cadmium yellow painted the front part of the shed green. I will use this colour later on the coats of both the dog and person.

Using white and lemon yellow I added more colour to the sunlit side of the first building. The tree shadows on the front of the building were put in using the yellow mix and adding raw sienna.

I will post this painting at a later date as more of the buildings have been completed.

Open Air Market - A Work in Progress

It is an extremely cold day today with the temperature sitting at -18F (-27.8C) and the wind chill making it feel like a biting -40F (-40C).

Heading down to the barn to do chores was not a a lot of fun, but the horses and cats were happy to see me, as were all the wild birds that come to my feeders and the flock of snow buntings that do not stray far from the house and enjoy an easy food supply.

After having breakfast and relaxing with a hot cup of tea it was time to get my things together and start working on a drawing of an open air market with crowds of Saturday morning bargain hunters wandering through the stalls.

I will post this piece at a later date once I have the sketch completed and start to apply paint.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork.

Dominican Republic Street - A Work in Progress

This is another of the scenes with buildings that I started yesterday in the class with Gail Hawkins.

What I liked about this scene was the way the tin was slapped onto the roof and starting to lift in various places.

The rough pieces of wood haphazardly thrown together for the walls and the way the debris from parts of the building had fallen and remained where they fell in the street.

I will post this picture at a later date once more of it has been completed.

Buildings VI-IX

Today I decided to take a drive along Highway 134 and look for interesting buildings to sketch. I was fortunate to find a number of them during the afternoon.

Roadway I

It wasn't long before I found a long roadway leading off the highway to some farm buildings near the top of a hill.

Abandoned House I

As I continued on my way, down in a dip in the road partially hidden in among the tall grass and trees growing up around it there was a small abandoned building with a couple of broken windows and the shingles slowly falling away from the roof.

Street Scene III

Just before lunchtime, I came across a small town and stopped to do a quick sketch of the main street that wound up a hill.

Old Buildings III

I had lunch at the local restaurant which was at the top of the hill. The building was interesting so I did a small outline drawing before I carried on along another road that would take back home.

Afternoon Stroll - A Work in Progress

Today we are having a major snow storm so I thought I would like to paint a place where it is nice and warm all year. This is another painting of a street scene (see Evening Stroll in my posting on 04 September 10) in the Caribbean.

The sky was painted with a wash of Antwerp blue and a few of the many pigeons were added.

I lightly drew in the people walking on the street so I wouldn't paint over them. Then the shadowed sides of the street were washed with Antwerp blue and the sunny side washed with raw sienna.

The building at the end of the street was painted with mixtures of burnt sienna and alizarin crimson.

The shadowed building on the left side of the street was painted with mixtures of French ultramarine blue, Antwerp blue and burnt sienna.

The sunny side of the building was painted with a darker mixture of raw sienna in some areas and a mixture of burnt sienna, raw sienna with a touch of French ultramarine blue to grey it.

The roof lines on all the buildings are pure burnt sienna and the shadow from the roof is a mix of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

The doorways, windows and the edge of the roof were a dark mixture of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

For the sunlit side of the street the window frames and door were painted with a mixture of Antwerp blue and raw sienna.

The flowers are alizarin crimson and the foliage are a mixture of French ultramarine blue and raw sienna.

I will post this painting when more of it has been completed.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.
