Cobourg Waterfront Festival

Today is the first day of the Lions Club Art Show which is a part of the Cobourg Waterfront Festival

The show is held on the shores of Lake Ontario which on any warm summer day attracts a large crowd to the sandy beaches and today was no exception.

With the bright sunshine it was nice that we had a breeze to keep the high heat and humidity away. Many of the people who came out to the beach for the day also come to visit the art show.

Waves

Today we hung the paintings at the Cobourg Waterfront Festival.

I just hope that this show won't be as hot and humid as the Signs of Spring show in May.

While having lunch on the beach I did this little sketch of the waves on Lake Ontario.

This original 3" x 7" pen and ink drawing is available matted and shrink wrapped for $25.00.

Last Day of Unfolding Show

Today I am sitting the last day of the Unfolding Show at KAGS. The show was well attended with a number of paintings sold.

While at the Gallery I worked on this painting of a seagull taking off from a rock on the shore of a lake. I was still remembering the seagulls taking flight from yesterday. I changed the time of day to the afternoon using French ultramarine blue for the sky and added a little burnt sienna for the rocks.

Lazy Days is an original 4-1/2" x 9-1/4" framed, watercolour is available for $225.00.

Morning Flight

I was up early this morning and went for a walk along the lake. The sunrise had turned the sky shades of pink and blue.

During the course of my walk I spooked a number of seagulls that had been resting on one of the docks. I watched them as they took flight and noticed how the white of their under bodies stood out against the morning sky.

When I returned home I thought it fitting to do try and capture what I could remember of their morning flight.

This original 4-1/2" x 9-1/4" framed, watercolour is available for $225.00. SOLD

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork. I hope you will return often.

Red Hot Pokers

I was sitting the Figuratively Speaking Show at KAGS today and while at the front desk I was working on a number of small floral paintings.

This one is of Kniphofia 'Shenandoah'  also called Tritoma, Red hot poker, Torch lily or Poker plant and is from a family of plants that includes over 70 species native to Africa.

These tall, dramatic plants produce thick, leafless stems topped with spikes of upright, tubular flowers that are set among sword shape leaves. The brilliantly colored flowers are red on top changing through orange to yellow at bottom; which is why they are given names such as "torch" and "red hot poker".

The flowers when they appear in early summer produce nectar which will attract hummingbirds and butterflies into the garden.

This original 3-1/2" x 5-1/2" framed watercolour is available for $125.00.

Moonlit Waves

This is one of three paintings I started a while ago (see posting on 23 Jan 2011).

I added in the sky with a darker mixture of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna. The foreground was then brushed in with a slightly lighter mixture of the sky colour as wet beach sand.

This 4" x 10-1/4" original watercolour painting when framed will be available for $125.00.

Autumn Maple

I pulled out a number of paintings that I had started a while ago (see posting on 16 January 2011) and decided that I would work on this one.

I painted in the main trunk of the tree first with mixtures of browns and greys and set it aside to dry.

Then I wet the area where I wanted to place the rest of the autumn leaves and using a sponge and various mixtures of new gamboge, aureolin, alizarin crimson, cadmium red and cadmium yellow added the colour.

This original 10" x 11" watercolour painting when framed will be available for $245.00.

Technicolour

This is a head study of a Pinto Thoroughbred cross mare called Technicolour that I used to compete against many years ago in English classes and I exhibited her on a number of occasions in both Line and Conformation Hunter over Fences classes when I used to show Tom.

I remember at one show that I ended up riding five of the nine entries in the Conformation Hunter over Fences class and four of them placed in the ribbons.

This framed original 8" x 10" graphite pencil drawing is available for $85.00. SOLD

Serene Place I

This is a little sketch I did out on the point near my friend Heather's home.

It is of one of the small islands in Chemong Lake and the shore behind it is known for the bass lurking in its waters.

This original 4" x 6" framed pen and ink drawing is available for $125.00. SOLD

ACEO - Rosebud 1

With June being the month most roses start blooming I thought it would be nice to do a painting of a rose.

Rather than do a solid coloured rose, I decided to do the rosebud of a blended coloured rose.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Windsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

Body Parts II - Jeremy

Today I was at KAGS  for the Life Drawing class and we had Jeremy as the model.

I did a couple of sketches of him and for the long pose I liked the way the light, shadows and reflected light played across his shoulder and arm so I did this drawing.

If you wish to view the sketches and paintings I have created of the nude figure please go to my Life Drawing Portfolio.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Spray

This was a painting that I had started a while ago (see posting 26 July 2010) and after looking at it for a while I decided to make it more dramatic that it needed to be cropped down.

I put a wash of colour over the rocks to darken them slightly and decided to leave well enough alone.

This 6-1/2" x 9-1/4" original watercolour painting when framed will be available for $195.00.

Overpowering Forces

The eastern shore of Aruba is constantly barraged by the wind and the waves.

The well-known Natural Bridge was created over thousands of years of pounding surf which caused the coral limestone rock to erode. The Bridge was one of the largest formations of its type in the world, having a span of over 100ft (30.5m) and over 25ft (7.6m) high. It was an impressive tourist attraction until its collapse in the early morning hours of 02 September 2005, when the powerful waves finally caused it to become unstable and break apart.

In its place at the same location, just a few feet away, another smaller bridge has formed known as Baby Bridge.

This is one of a number of paintings I started of the waves crashing against the rock face in Aruba a few years ago (see posts on 30 Oct 2010 and 12 Mar 2012).

I added the texture to the cliff  and spray from the waves splashing up against the rock face.

This original 10-1/2" x 14-1/2" watercolour when framed will be available for $295.00.

Lake's Edge

Today is a bright and sunny day and I thought a painting of Chemong Lake showing the promise of things to come would be appropriate as temperatures are warming up in preparation for the summer.

Congratulations to new collector Mr. John Roesch of Burlington, Ontario on his purchase of this original 5-1/4" x 7" framed watercolour painting.

Cottage Country

In the region known as the Kawarthas there are a multitude of lakes dotted with small islands and great fishing.

This is one of the fishing holes on Lower Buckhorn Lake known for its largemouth bass.

This original 3" x 4" pen and ink drawing is available matted and shrink wrapped for $40.00.

Birch Forest

This is another painting I started a while ago when I was painting in acrylic (see post on 19 August 2011).

I added the markings on the birch trees using a mix of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

I added the leaves to some of the tree branches with a mixture of raw sienna and cadmium yellow light.

This original 6-1/4" x 10" framed acrylic painting is available for $150.00.

Autumn Breeze

This is a painting I started a while ago and decided to complete (see post on 17 August 2011).

I did some more work on the tree trunk and branches. Then I added leaves to the branches, on the ground and a few that the wind had picked up and carried away.

This original 7-1/4" x 10-3/4" framed acrylic painting is available for $150.00.

Birch Trio

I enjoy painting birch trees and have done paintings of them in all seasons and in a wide variety of media. I came across this one and wanted to finish it as there was very little it needed (see post 17 October 2010).

It didn't take long to put in the markings on the trees. I used various mixtures of French ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and raw sienna.

This original 5-1/4" x 7-1/2" watercolour painting will be available for $165.00.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork. I hope you will return often.

Hunter's Moon

This painting just needed more definition on the trees from when I started the painting on location while at the Knoepfli Inn last year (see post on 03 October 2011).

I also darkened the water and defined the moon glow reflected in it.

This is an original 2-3/4" x 5-3/4" framed watercolour painting and is available for $85.00.

Drive Shed I

In this area there are many old barns and sheds that are slowly falling apart and will soon be a distant memory.

This drive shed is still standing on Highway 28 (also known as the Lakefield Road) but for how long I do not know.

Each year there are a few less tiles on the sagging roof and a few more missing boards.

This original 4" x 6” matted and shrink wrapped, pen and ink drawing is available for $45.00. SOLD

Brief Encounter

I set this painting on my desk and kept looking at it to see what was bothering me about it (see postings on 19 March 2011, 11 December 2011 and 27 May 2012).

The sun was still the problem and seemed to have a dark ring around it which would not happen. I blended the area around the sun and darkened the cloud slightly.

This original 4-1/2" x 7-3/4" watercolour painting when framed will be available for $165.00.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork.

OSWOA - Maple Tree 4 and 5

Today I was sitting the last day of the Figuratively Speaking show at KAGS.

To help pass the time I was working on completing more of the maple trees on which have greens made from different combinations of yellow and blue.

Then wash in a red for the shadowed areas of the leaves.

ACEO - Reflected Trees 1

Often the lakes are so calm and peaceful that the trees and shoreline are reflected back as a mirror image.

Here the water is just lightly touched by a gentle breeze.

Taking the Bait

This is a painting I had started last year (see post on 27 Feb 2011) and decided to work on today

I chose to turn this fish into a brook trout rather than make it a muskie as I had originally planned. I wanted a little more colour on the fish to create interest.

I added some details to the underwater logs. Then using various greyed greens I painted in some weeds to complete the painting.

This original 3-3/4" x 9-1/4" watercolour painting when framed will be available for $145.00.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Tai I and II

While taking a break from doing the barn chores this morning I did a little sketch of Tai, who being the barn pest just had to keep coming over and see what I was doing.

It is bad enough that he comes into the barn to "help" me while I clean out the stalls by grabbing the end of the pitchfork and playing tug of war.

But I managed to do this quick head study of him, when I could get him to stop trying to steal my pencil and get his muzzle off of my sketch book.

After finishing up the barn chores, I wanted to try and do another of him sketch since he wasn't leaving me alone.

Tai I

When I shooed Tai away by waving the sketch book at him, he decided to show his displeasure with a display of bucking around the barn yard before coming back to me asking for a treat.

Tai II

These original, pen and ink sketches are available matted and shrink wrapped for $20.00 each.
