OSWOA - Country Road 1

Today I wanted to finish this painting that I started in a Colour and Composition class with Neil Broadfoot many years ago (see posts on 29 January 2012, 11 December 2015, 20 February and 11 August 2016), this painting started as Colour and Composition 6.

I started with the main tree in the foreground on the left side o f the road, using various combinations of French ultramarine blue mixed with burnt sienna, and continued by putting in the rest of the tree trunks and branches on the background trees.

From there I lightened the tree colour and brushed in the road, followed by darkening the colour slightly to put in the ruts in the road.














This was followed by mixing various greens using raw sienna and French ultramarine blue to put in a few pine trees and add more definition to the grass.

Along the Road I

I thought I would work on this drawing that I had started last year (see posts on 12 September and 18 December 2018).

Starting in the middle section of the hill I drew in the pine trees that were in front of the background deciduous trees and higher than those that were in the centre section of the hill.

Next came the tops of the deciduous trees in front of the pines.















This was followed by putting in the pine trees showing above the closest trees by the road.

Lastly, I put in the deciduous trees at the edge of the road.

This original 7" x 9" pen and ink drawing will be available when matted and shrink wrapped for $60.00.

ACEO - The Road Home 3

Today I wanted to work on this painting that I had started a couple of years ago (see posts on 25 November 2017 and 23 February 2018).

I started in the background and painted the buildings on the distant hill.

From there I used mixtures of cadmium red and cadmium yellow and applied the maple leaves on the trees with a sponge.

Next I painted in the three birch trees using burnt sienna and raw sienna on some areas of the trunks, followed by adding the dark markings on the tree with a mixture of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

With washes of burnt sienna I painted in the road followed by a wash of the blue in some areas for the shadows.















Using various mixtures of French ultramarine blue, Antwerp blue, raw sienna, new gamboge and aureolin I painted in the grasses and growies  on the land on both sides of the road.

Lastly, I used lemon yellow and put on the birch tree leaves and scattered a few fallen leaves onto the road

Along the Road I - A Work in Progress

Today I didn't have a lot of time to work on art, as I have friends coming by to pick me up so we will finish up our Christmas shopping.

I thought I would work on this one which I can stop at any time with no clean up required (see post on 12 September 2018).

I started at the top and put in all the pine tree tops that appeared above the treeline.















From there, I put in the tops of the trees at various levels near the top of the hill.

Next, I indicated the base of the hill and the path the road followed.

The last drawing, I was able to do was put in the grasses and growies along the roadway.

I will post this at a later time once it has been completed.

Bend in the Road 2

It has been an interesting day with the temperatures starting at 18F (-8C) in the morning and warming up to 43F (6C) by late afternoon.















Throughout the day we had snow flurries, with enough snow falling to cover the ground with a thin blanket of snow. While I watched the snow fall, I did this drawing of a rutted, dirt road out in the country.

The Road Home 3 - A Work in Progress

Today is going to be an interesting day weather wise. We are under a Meteorological Alert with a freezing rain warning for this morning and the freezing rain to change to rain later in the day as the temperature makes it to 43F (6C).

I made sure I filled the feeders and put plenty of cracked corn on the ground as the red winged blackbirds have arrived from the south, and it helps to have them well fed to survive the freezing rain, just in case it doesn't change to rain later.















I started by putting in the sky using French ultramarine blue with just a touch of burnt sienna to grey it slightly; being careful to leave areas of white paper for the clouds.

Next I added a little bit of raw sienna to the sky colour for a yellow green and put in the distant field. I then added in a little more blue to darken the green and painted in the pine trees.

I added a little bit of burnt sienna to the green to create a dark for some of the maple tree trunks and dead pine trees.

I will post this painting at a later date once more work on it has been completed.

The Road Home 3

Today is overcast; with a mild temperature of 45F (7C) and showers throughout the day are in the forecast.

On the way home I was on one of the back roads and came across one of the long driveway leading up to a farmhouse off in the distance. I stopped the car and did this little drawing of the driveway leading to the house.















What I liked about this scene were the three birch trees at the side of the road and how their white bark and black markings were outlined against the cloudy sky and also how the road disappeared into nothing only to reappear further in the distance.

This drawing could be developed into a larger painting at a later date.

Ron decided to take the scenic route (also known as the back roads) as we were returning home after attending our second funeral this month.

Through the Woods 2 and 3

I am glad that today is sunny and warm at 73F (23C) with a gentle breeze keeping things pleasant for my niece, Jordan's Graduation at Trent University.

She has been living with us for the almost three years and today she has attained her Bachelor of Science Degree and I am very proud of her.

I made sure that I had plenty of time to get to the University, which had a special area reserved for people with physical disabilities. Since I am gradually learning to walk again and today is the end of the second week for me to be able to put full weight on my leg and I am getting a little more used to using the rollator to learn how to walk again.

On my way home I went out through the back parking lot at Trent onto a side road. On the road I came across two paths going through the woodlots on either side of the road.

Roadway I - A Work in Progress

Today I wanted to do a little more work on this drawing that I had started a while ago (see post on 19 June 2013).

I started with the building on the right side first. Working from the top of the building down, I put on the aluminum roof, leaving a slight ripple in the top line of the building. Finished the roof by adding in a few lightning rods.

Next, I extended the wall to fit under the roof, straightened up the barn doors, added the frame around the window and finished by putting on the barn board.












From there I started on the building on the left side, I first worked on the back attachment to the building, putting on the roof and indicating a door.

Next, I started straightening out the front part of the building, but I had to get ready go to an appointment.

I will post this drawing at a later date once it is completed.

Street Scene III - A Work in Progress

Today I thought I would work on this sketch that I started a number of years ago (see post on 19 June 2013).

I started on the building on the left side of the road and gave some definition to the outside walls and the roof.

From there I went to the building at the far end of the road and worked on the roof and added a window and a set of double doors.















On the right side of the street I straightened the hitching post in front of the building.

Christine came in to visit me and make sure I had everything I needed before she would have to leave for work.

I will post this drawing at a later date once more work is completed on the buildings.

Four Seasons 3 - Four Works in Progress

Today was a foggy, grey day but the temperature 48F (9C) is remaining fairly mild for February.

I pulled out this set of the four seasons that I had started a couple of years ago (see post on 14 April 2015) and wanted to put the sky into each of them.














Spring 3

The first one I put in a grey sky using French ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and a small amount of alizarin crimson.














Summer 3

On the second one I used a mix of Antwerp blue with a small amount of cobalt blue.














Autumn 3

For the third one I used a wash of cobalt blue.














Winter 3

On the last painting used a mix of Antwerp blue and French ultramarine blue.

I will post each of these paintings at a later date after I put in the land on each side of the road and the roadway.

Railway Bridge - A Work in Progress

While going through a stack of unfinished canvases, I came across this painting I had started last year at the 1st Annual Outdoor Painting Festival Cavan/Millbrook held on 01 and 02 October 2016.

I was more concerned about completing the other painting I had started on the first day of the plein air painting competition (see post on 02 October 2016) that I forgot all about this one and it was added to the stack of paintings that needed to be completed.

Using a pencil, I give some definition to the bridge, the top of the overpass and to the road, as well to the trees in the background.

With it being an autumn scene there will be a lot of colour in the painting.

I may put a train on the track, or a car going through the underpass or someone riding a bicycle or walking on the road.

I will post this piece at a later date once I have decided what I was going to add and finished the drawing and transferred it to the canvas.

First Day of Shades of Summer Art Show

It turned out to be a wise choice that I waited until early this morning to finish hanging my paintings.  I was able to hang the additional nine paintings and arrange the exhibit so it made a pleasing display without being rushed or feeling tired due to the heat or high humidity in place at night.

Once again the temperature reached 95F (35C) and the humidity was even higher making it feel like 107F (41.7C).  I was fortunate in that where I was sitting at the back of the church hall I got an occasional breeze coming through the open door.

I worked on this painting that I had started quite some time ago (see posts on 29 January 2012, 11 December 2015 and 23 February 2016).

I started by painting in the hills using various mixtures of raw sienna, French ultramarine blue and Antwerp blue and left the trunk of the main tree in the left side field white.

Once the paint had dried I used a mixture of the grass colours and burnt sienna to paint in the fence posts and then using pure burnt sienna for the barbed wire fence.














Country Road 1

I am not sure that I like the light green colour of the hills but before I change the colour I will probably put in the trees take and decide at that point if I will change the colour. I will post this painting at a later date.

Although not many people came out to see the show today, fourteen paintings were sold from Ron Desjardine, Pat Harvey-McCourt, Rebecca Bilcox, Susan Sydney, JoAnne Connell Northey, Dianne Collins, Catherine Selinger and Heather Grant. Small items were sold by Dianne Collins and pottery by JoAnne Connell Northey.

I would like to thank Ms. Joan Smith of Toronto, Ont. on her purchase of Pristine Beauty (see post on 13 June 2010) and Sunset Reeds 1 (see post on 20 July 2012). Country Road 1 - A Work in Progress

The first flock of Red-winged Blackbirds have arrived to join the four others that have been here all winter.

I had a little bit of time and wanted to work on one of the paintings that have been around for a while and need to be completed like this one (see posts on 29 January 2012 and 11 December 2015).

It was originally called Colour and Composition 6 and I have renamed it Country Road 1.













I added more aureolin into the top of the sky and while the sky area was still wet I added a mix of cadmium red, cadmium yellow and alizarin crimson into the bottom of the sky.

With cobalt blue and alizarin crimson I added a few clouds into the sky.

I will post this painting at a later date once more work on it has been completed.

Colour and Composition 6 and 7 - Two Works in Progress

I pulled out these two paintings that I had started quite a while ago (see post on 29 January 2012) and decided it was about time I did something with them.

For the first one I thought that it looked as though a road winding its way through the hills would work.

I lightly sketched in the road and added a fence line on the one side as though it was part of a pasture and added a few trees to the top of the hill.

On the other side I put in a few trees and I may at a later time when I start painting it add another fence or do something entirely different.

For the second one it seemed as though it should have a stream running through the fields.

I lightly indicated the stream and added a few of the main trees. I will have to decide if I wish to turn this piece into a pasture or a forest scene.

I will post each of these paintings at a later date once they have been completed.

Four Seasons 3

It is not quite as warm as yesterday but I am happy with it reaching 54F (12.2C) and the bright sunshine which is helping to dry everything and my lawn is showing signs of starting to turn green.

Today I am painting with the Buckhorn Tuesday Painting Group and I thought that I would do four different drawings each representing one of the four seasons with people on a roadway..















Spring 3

I thought I may as well start with spring, which is well known for its rainy days. After putting in the road and some trees on each side I put in a few puddles on the road.

Then I added a lone figure walking on the road and carrying an umbrella to keep off the rain.















Summer 3

Next it was time to work on the summer road, with its hot days and trees covered in leaves which provide shade from the sun.

After getting the road and trees put into the drawing, I thought for this one to put two couples out for a walk on the road heading toward each other.














Autumn 3

After lunch I started on the autumn road with its semi bare trees on each side of the road and a scattering of leaves at the edge of the road.

For this one I thought I would like to have three people walking down the road.















Winter 3

Before the afternoon was over I wanted get the last season completed. I started by indicating the road and putting snowbanks on each side of the road with the trees bare of any leaves.

Lastly, I put an adult with a child walking along the road.

At a later date I may decide to do painting of the four seasons.

Fence Line 2

This morning is the first day we have had frost on the ground. It looks as though it will be an early winter this year.

I am sitting the Rural Scenes art show at KAGS this afternoon.














I thought since it was a rural scenes show that I would work on a country scene that is common to the area.

I did this sketch of a local farm driveway that is on Highway 7B (also known as the Lindsay Road).
