ACEO - Long Shadows 5

Today I wanted to work on this painting that I started a number of years ago (see posts on 22 November 2014 and 26 March 2017)

Using various mixtures of Antwerp blue and French ultramarine blue and raw sienna I painted in the background trees and the base colours on the needles of the tree in the foreground.

I added more of the blues to darken the colour slightly and put in the shadowed needles.

While the shadowed needles were drying I added a little bit of raw sienna to the green mixture and the high lit needles were painted.

Next I mixed a grey of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna and put in the tree trunks and branches.

Lastly, using mixtures of raw sienna, burnt sienna and new gamboge I put in the grasses and growies.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Lanaquarelle 100% cotton, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

Chemong Lake III-V - Three Works in Progress

Today we went out in the pontoon boat on Lake Chemong.

As usual we went out into the lake and dropped anchor and had supper. Afterward we pulled up the anchor and let the current carry us back.

While Ron tried his luck at fishing, I worked on a few sketches of the lake and the landscape.

Chemong Lake Cottage III

The first one was to be of a large cottage on a point of land, hidden in among the trees.

I had just finished the sketch of the island as Ron caught a sunfish, which I had to take off the hook. I decided that I would put in the cottage from my photographs at home later.

Chemong Lake Boathouse IV

Ron started the motor and headed for a fishing spot closer to the boat launch, while I worked on my next sketch was of a large boathouse at the edge of the lake.

It wasn't long before he caught a small perch and with my sketch almost completed, he moved on to another place to try for a third fish.

Chemong Lake Causeway V

Unfortunately for Ron he had no luck on getting a third fish. I continued to work on a sketch of the causeway as he headed into the dock. On the whole it was an enjoyable evening on the lake.

I will post each of these sketches at a later date as more work on them is completed.

ACEO - Northern Island 1

Today the temperatures are 86F (30C) with the humidity making it feel like 104F (40C). We are under a Meteorological Alert for severe thunder storms, a large hail warning, flash floods and the possibility of tornadoes and winds of 50mph (80kmph).

I thought I would stay inside out of the heat and humidity and work on this painting that I had started many years ago (see posts on 14 June 2013 and 22 December 2016).

I started by painting in the under paint of the rocks with a mix of burnt sienna and alizarin crimson.

Using various mixtures of Antwerp blue, French ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, raw sienna and new gamboge, I painted the trees on the islands, beginning with those in the background being the lightest green and gradually darkening the colour while working forward to those on the large island.

Next using various mixtures of burnt sienna, raw sienna, alizarin crimson and French ultramarine blue I added the shapes and shading onto the rocks, again beginning on the background islands and working forward with darker colour and more details.

With a mixture of the two blues and burnt sienna I dry brushed in the water leaving some areas of the paper white.

Using the rock colour I put in a few reflections of the rocks into some of the white areas.

Lastly I put a lone seagull into the sky.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork. I hope you will return often.

Lovesick Lake IX-XII - Four Works in Progress

This morning the five baby swallows left the nest and are out flying with their parents. I do hope they all survive and hopefully will return next year.

Today Ron and I went out to Lovesick Lake to go canoeing.

Lovesick Lake IX

Ron wanted to try out the small trawling motor he had gotten for the new flat back canoe to see how long the batteries would last.

We paddled out from the boat launch area by Lock 28 Burleigh Falls and headed for the channel. Once in the channel Ron started the motor and we continued through the channel, watching for the submerged rocks and trees scattered throughout the middle channel.

Lovesick Lake X

At the halfway point we let the canoe drift while Ron fished and I did a number of sketches of the islands and trees.

After a while the wind came up and it started to cloud over and we decided to head back to the boat launch taking a different channel on the way back.

Lovesick Lake XI

On our way back, we went past Porter Island where there once had been a majestic pine tree which had been stuck by lightning since we were last there. The nice thing was that a pair of ospreys had built a nest and I managed to get a number of photographs of them.

It wasn't long before we made it back to the boat launch.

Ron was very pleased to see that after over an hour of use, the battery on his trawling motor was still more than half charged.

I will post each of these drawings at a later date as more work on them has been completed.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Display at the MacKelvie Gallery

Today the KAGS Outdoor Painters' Group will hang a display of their artwork in the MacKelvie Gallery at the Lang Pioneer Village and Museum, located in Keene, Ontario.

While we were hanging our exhibit The Peterborough Examiner sent out a photographer/writer to take pictures of our Group hanging the show in the gallery and I was nominated by the Group to give him information about the Outdoor Painters and the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio.

I also ended up having to go outside and sketch some of the buildings including the Lang Grist Mill which is celebrating its 175th year and Fife Cabin while being photographed.

The article will appear in the paper later today.

I will post the article at a later date together with the photographs.
