Chemong Lake X and XI - Two Works in Progress

Today was another hot 82F (28C) and humid, 93F (34C) and although they are calling for thunder storms tonight, I doubt that they are going to appear.

Ron wanted to take the pontoon boat out again and see if the motor was going to work any better, so we went back to Chemong Lake.

It took at least four tries until he finally managed to get it to go into gear and take us out into the lake. This time we went up the lake to the very end.

Once we made it to the end, we stopped to have lunch before turning around to head back to the boat launch.

On the way back Ron stopped to try his luck at fishing, while I worked on a sketch of a nice area with bent and twisted cedars, sunken logs and lots of strong contrast with sunlight and shadows.

From there we moved further down the lake as Ron continued fishing, letting the current carry us along which didn't give me much time to sketch.

I will post each of these drawings at a later date as more work on them is completed.

Chemong Lake VII-IX - Three Works in Progress

With it being a little on the windy side after lunch, we decided to take the pontoon boat out on Chemong Lake. We just had the motor overhauled at Paris Marine and picked it up on Saturday.

We loaded everything onto the boat and put it into the lake; I walked it along the stone water break while Ron parked the trailer.

We were finally ready to go and the motor didn't want to work.

At first the motor wouldn't start and when it did it wouldn't stay running.

After about 20 minutes of playing with it, Ron finally got it started and it stayed running so we headed down the lake. I had misgivings about the motor continuing to work.

When we arrived where Ron wanted to fish and islands for me to sketch, we stopped and dropped the anchor. As usual Ron fished while I sketched one of the islands.

We saw a heron ahead of us and it flew in behind the next island and with Ron not having any luck catching a fish we decided to follow him; but the motor once again decided not to co-operate and it took a little while to get it running and stay running.

Finally, we made it around the next island and the heron was still there. We stayed well away from him, but I was able to get a few nice photographs and I worked on a sketch of him and the area he was in while Ron fished.

It was time to head back to the boat launch and this time it only took two tries to get the motor started and stay running. Ron stopped one more time to try his luck fishing while I sketched and he was rewarded with a rock bass.















Chemong Lake VIII

It was getting late and we headed back to the boat launch; this time the motor started and stayed running on its first try.

Once we reached the boat launch the wind had become stronger and it was hard getting the boat alongside the dock. As I jumped onto the dock I lost my balance and ended up going for an unexpected swim. The upside was I got the boat tied to the dock and Ron went for the trailer and I was able to help get the boat easily onto the trailer.

Selwyn Beach VII - A Work in Progress

Today I wanted to do some work on this drawing that I had started a couple of years ago (see post on 06 May 2018) when we were at Selwyn Beach Conservation Area.

I started at the bottom of the shoreline and gradually worked my way up, adding water, rocks, weeds, grasses and growies.

When I came to the edge of the bank I continued adding the grasses, growies and rocks.

From there I started working my way across the far edge of the land adding the rocks and growies.

I left the area where the birch and cedar trees are going to be placed blank until after they have been drawn in and completed.

Next, I did a little work on the land extending out into the Chemong Lake.

I will post this drawing again, once I have finished putting in the foreground trees.

Chemong Lake VI and VII - Two Works in Progress

Today I didn't have a lot of time to work on my art, but as I looked through my sketch books I came across these two drawings that I started last month (see post 02 September 2019), when Ron and I were out on Chemong Lake.

The buildings needed to be straightened and have more details added.

Time passed quickly and before long it was time for me to go to an appointment.

Chemong Lake VI and VII

Since Ron didn't have to work today, we decided to go out on Chemong Lake in the pontoon boat.

We didn't go too far from the boat launch and stopped in the first inlet and let the current carry the boat along.















Chemong Lake VI - The Orange Barns

I turned and faced a different direction and on a hill there were a couple of barns and a farmhouse which I finished drawing before it started to rain.

Ron managed to catch two bass and I did two pencil drawings, so it was a good day all around.

Chemong Lake III-V - Three Works in Progress

Today we went out in the pontoon boat on Lake Chemong.

As usual we went out into the lake and dropped anchor and had supper. Afterward we pulled up the anchor and let the current carry us back.

While Ron tried his luck at fishing, I worked on a few sketches of the lake and the landscape.















Chemong Lake Cottage III

The first one was to be of a large cottage on a point of land, hidden in among the trees.

I had just finished the sketch of the island as Ron caught a sunfish, which I had to take off the hook. I decided that I would put in the cottage from my photographs at home later.

Ron started the motor and headed for a fishing spot closer to the boat launch, while I worked on my next sketch was of a large boathouse at the edge of the lake.

It wasn't long before he caught a small perch and with my sketch almost completed, he moved on to another place to try for a third fish.

Unfortunately for Ron he had no luck on getting a third fish. I continued to work on a sketch of the causeway as he headed into the dock. On the whole it was an enjoyable evening on the lake.

Selwyn Beach VII and VIII

Today was another bright and sunny day with a nice breeze, although a little cooler than yesterday at 63F (17C).

After all the work we did to clear most of the debris from the windstorm we decided to go to Selwyn Beach for a picnic. While the others were looking for "treasure" with their metal detectors I sketched the south end of the beach.

Most of the rocks at the end of the beach were underwater.

The only thing showing above the water was the top half of the post where during the summer one end of the rope is tied to mark the south edge of the beach's swimming area ends and goes the other end of the rope goes through the water across to a dead weight mooring at the north end of the beach.

Selwyn Beach VII

My first drawing was of the shoreline on the east side of Chemong Lake facing south down the lake. I started with the edge of the water on the beach and continued where the land juts out into the lake.

I added in the main trees on the shore first, followed by the grasses, growies and smaller bushes.

Lastly, I put in the horizon line and added the trees on the distant shoreline.















Selwyn Beach VIII

For my next drawing, I thought I would start with the post at the end of the submerged rocks and work my way back to where my first drawing ended.

Once the post was drawn in, I followed the path through the water first to a clump of bushes, then the top of a few rocks, followed by a small bent cedar tree, partially submerged by the high water of the lake and then, I a few more tops of rocks with some small, partially submerged bushes.

Lastly, I put in the horizon line, added trees onto the distant shoreline, a closer island and a few cottages and boat houses on the west side of the lake.

I will probably ink in both of these drawings in at a later date.

Dark Water I

Today I wanted to finish this drawing that I had started last year (see posts on 02 July, 20 August and 31 October 2016).

I started by putting in the rest of the trees on the distant shoreline, indicated a few rocks at the waterline and added in a few ripples into the water below the rocks.

From there I started working on putting in the shadows on the large rocks behind the pine trees and the large dead cedar tree.

I added in the growies and small bushes along the edge of the water and at the base of some of the trees.














This was followed by adding definition and shadows onto the small rocks on the shoreline.

Next I put in the two dead cedar tree trunks on the left side of the drawing.

Lastly, I added more ripples into the water in the foreground below the rocks and the shoreline.

This original 6" x 9" pen and ink drawing when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $40.00.

Evening Sky 6

While I was on my way home from Buckhorn I stopped along the Buckhorn Road where Lake Chemong is on both sides of the highway.

With the sun going down and the wonderful colours of the sunset being reflected into the water I did this quick sketch of the lake and trees on the shoreline.















I also took a number of photographs as reference just in case I decided to do a painting of it at a later date.

I can also picture this scene as a set of the four seasons. Who knows what may happen in the future.

Dark Water I - A Work in Progress

Today I wanted to do a little more work on this drawing that I started earlier this year (see posts on 02 July and 20 August 2016).

I started by putting in some of the background trees and rocks.

From there I put in the dead trees behind the pines at the edge of the lake and added some details to the grasses and growies. Then I finished the rock at the water's edge on the right side.















Next I worked on the big dead cedar tree; adding the branches, putting in the bark and shading on the tree trunk and adding the water ripples around the branch in the water and those against the shoreline.

I will post this drawing at a later date once it has been completed.

Shades of Orange

Today the KAGS Outdoor Painters' Group went to the Stillwater on the Lake Bed and Breakfast in Peterborough, Ontario.

It is a beautiful place, with lovely gardens, great views of the Chemong Lake and a peaceful atmosphere.

After spending most of the morning taking reference photographs and doing quick sketches of many things that I wanted to paint at a later time I settled at a large table in a sheltered spot and decided that I would paint the view in front of me of the lake.












With using a half sheet of watercolour paper and knowing how quickly the paint would dry in the warm weather  I was going to make some changes to the scene and keep things fairly simple.

Using large brushes and three colours French ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and raw sienna, I changed the afternoon scene into a sunset where the sun has just gone below the horizon but the lovely orange glow remains on the clouds.

Sunset Lake 1

As I was coming home from Lindsay, I could see the bottom end of Chemong Lake and I stopped on the shoulder of the road to do this little drawing of the lake with the islands.














It is something that perhaps I will develop into a full colour painting at a later time either in acrylic or watercolour.

Lake Reflections I

Today I pulled out this sketch that I did earlier this year (see post on 12 June 2014) and decided it needed some work.

I started with the two large trees in the foreground, which seems to frame the maple tree across the inlet.

Next I put in the distant trees, the maples and the rocks on the far shoreline and the ones in the water.















I put in the foreground shoreline and added some grasses and growies at the base of the trees and at the edge of the lake.

Lastly I added some cattails and bull rushes against the edge of the shoreline.

This original 7" x 9-1/2” pen and ink drawing when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $50.00.

Frozen Lake 1-4

The cold weather is here and I am breaking the ice off of the horse trough with our high for the day going up to a balmy 22F (-5.6C), but the bright side is that the sun is shining.

I thought today I would take the dog with me and go to the Selwyn Beach Conservation Area and do a couple of sketches of the frozen lake while walking along the beach and on the trails.

Once we arrived at the park She-Ra stayed close beside me, normally she would be rushing ahead of me and wait until I caught up with her before racing of again. But I have to keep remembering that she is thirteen years old and starting to slow down.

I stopped and did my first drawing at the end of the first trail which led down to the beach and you could see the edge of Chemong Lake through the trees. From there I continued along the second trail which ran along side of the lake and stopped again to do another drawing.

I kept an eye on She-Ra, making sure she didn't go too far out on the frozen lake because the last thing I wanted was for her to find a thin spot in the ice and go through it into the lake. After I finished my third drawing I decided it was time to head back.

Just before we came to the trail which took us back to the parking lot, I stopped and did my last drawing of the lake before heading home.

Overlooking the Lake 1

On the way home from running errands I decided to take a different route home and go through Ennismore for a change.

I stopped and did this drawing of Chemong Lake from the west side of the lake.















There were a few large pine trees in the foreground which was on a ridge above the lake.
