Chemong Lake VI and VII - Two Works in Progress

Today I didn't have a lot of time to work on my art, but as I looked through my sketch books I came across these two drawings that I started last month (see post 02 September 2019), when Ron and I were out on Chemong Lake.

The buildings needed to be straightened and have more details added.

Changing Season 1 and 2 - Two Works in Progress

Today I wanted to do a couple of small autumn paintings, so I used a couple of photographs that I took while canoeing on Eels Lake earlier this week.

The first one is taken from the dock of the shoreline area nearest where the boat launch is located.

It is a nice mixture of coniferous and deciduous trees at the edge of the lake.

It shows how low the water levels are in the lake at this time of the year, with so many of the rocks and stumps being above the water.

Next I chose the area in the inlet on the far side of the parking lot for those using the boat launch.

This view shows even more of the exposed rocks that are normally below the surface of the lake.

Most of the deciduous trees are higher up and further back from the shoreline, while the pines and cedars are lower and almost on the edge of the water.

I decided I would do these paintings just at sunset as I saw them.

I started by putting in the sky in with a mix of raw sienna and alizarin crimson.

At a later date I will post each of these paintings as more work on them is completed.

Along the Shore 1-3 - Three Works in Progress

This morning I woke up 19F (-7C), with the wind chill making it feel like 8F (-13C) and add to that another 3" (7.6cm) of snow on top of everything we had received a couple of days ago.

To offset the cold I decided to work on these three paintings that I had started a number of years ago (see posts on 16 September 2013, 27 August 2016 and 16 January 2017).

Working on all three paintings at the same time, I started by putting the seagulls into the sky using a dark of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

Next I put in the blue of the water using various mixtures of Antwerp blue and raw sienna, leaving some areas of the paper white against the shoreline.

I added a small amount of French ultramarine blue to the water colour and added a few darker areas throughout the water to indicate waves.

Using various mixtures of French ultramarine blue, Antwerp blue, raw sienna, burnt sienna and alizarin crimson I started adding layers of colour onto the distant islands on the horizon line.

Darkening the colours slightly I put in the closer islands.

Lastly, I worked on the closer more detailed rock cliffs close to the beach.

Burleigh Inn Pine Tree I - A Work in Progress

I just couldn't get into painting today so I decided I would do a little work on a pen and ink drawing; and I pulled out this one that I had started earlier this year when the KAGS Ourdoor Painters' Group spent the day at the Burleigh Inn located on Stoney Lake (see post on 08 June 2017).

I started by putting in a couple of the larger background trees on the far shore.

From there I came forward and indicated the rocks at the base of the pine tree and added a few grasses and growies in among the rocks.

Next I started on the main pine tree beginning at the top and working my way down the trunk.

I gradually was adding branches and needles onto the tree.

I will post this drawing at a later date once the pine tree has been completed.

Sand Bucket 1 - A Work in Progress

Today I wanted to put some paint on this little drawing that I did quite a while ago (see post on 21 Jun 2013).

First I needed to fix a few of the lines on the bucket and then I moved the horizon line a little higher up in the painting.

Using cerulean blue I put in the sky and the under paint for the lake.

Next I made a mix of raw sienna with a small amount of burnt sienna and brushed in the sand being careful to leave an area of white paper between the sand and the water.

With a mix of Antwerp blue and cerulean blue I put in the waves on the lake surface almost to the beach.















Into this section where the waves roll over the sand and onto the shore I first put down the water colour and then added lines of raw sienna and burnt sienna to indicate the churning sand.

With pure burnt sienna I put in the "wet" areas of the sand between the water and the dry shore, still being careful to leave the white paper as the foam.

Lastly, I put in the distant shores on the horizon line with a mix of the blues and raw sienna.

I will post this painting at a later date once it has been completed.

Caribbean Shore 1

We are under a freezing rain warning for later this morning and with the temperature at 27F (-2.2C) and the wind chill making it feel like 20F (-6.7C) it gives me a feeling of déjà vu back to 2013 when I was without power for almost five days due to the freezing rain storm that we had about this time of the year.

So rather than dwell on the upcoming storm I thought I would do a drawing of a nice warm place like a beach in the Caribbean, with the surf rolling up onto the shore and a soft breeze making the palm fronds gently sway.














This little black and white drawing brings back warm memories of the white sand beaches. I can hardly wait to head south to the Caribbean islands again.

At the Beach 1

Almost all of the snow has melted and the temperature today is to go up to 56F (13.3C)  which is just to tease us as tomorrow we are to get snow once again.

The sunset was beautiful this evening with the warm reds, oranges and yellows lighting up the sky before the sun disappeared from sight.

As I sat at the kitchen table watching the sun go down I thought of the sunsets we would see in Aruba while looking out over Eagle Beach from our balcony.

I did this drawing of the beach at sunset.

Since there often were people strolling along the beach in the evening I added someone walking along the shore.

Autumn Shadows

It is another cold day with the temperature at 15F (-9C) but at least the sun is shining and there is no new snow falling, although the snow we had yesterday remains.

I thought I would like to finish this painting that I had started a number of years ago (see post on 27 May 2010).

I mixed different browns and greys and pinks using mixtures of French ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, raw sienna and alizarin crimson.

Next I painted the rocks on the left side of the painting making sure to leave some areas of white on the rocks for highlights and adding shape and shadows onto their surface.













Mixing greens using Antwerp blue, raw sienna and aureolin I added a few more areas of shadow across the grass, this was followed by using a darker green and putting some individual grasses and growies at the base of the rocks in the pasture.

I used this darker green mixture into the water near the shoreline.

Lastly, I added a few dark lines at the edge of the water where it meets the land and at the base of the rocks.

This original 7" x 11-1/2” watercolour painting will be available when framed for $235.00.
