ACEO - Burleigh Rocks 1

Today I thought I would finish this painting that I had started last year (see post on 09 December 2019). All that it needed to be completed were the rocks in the foreground.

First I washed some of the rocks with alizarin crimson and while the paint was still wet I added a small amount of burnt sienna into a few areas.

As the paint dried I used a mix of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna and put in the shadows and cracks on the rocks.

On the other rocks I lightly touched them with a wash of Antwerp blue and burnt sienna and as it was drying I brushed in some alizarin crimson and then added the cracks in the rocks and the shadows with burnt sienna and a small amount of French ultramarine blue.

Lastly, I put a little alizarin crimson into the water below the rocks for reflections.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

Burleigh Inn Pine Tree I - A Work in Progress

Today with it being another hot 81F (27C) and humid 91F (33C) day I didn't feel like spending the afternoon outside working in the garden.

Instead I decided to do some work on one of my drawings and I chose this one from a paint out last year when I was at the Burleigh Inn by their boat docks (see posts on 08 June and 21 October 2017).

I finished putting in the top of the pine tree and then I started adding in some of the lower branches and it wasn't long before I had to get ready to go out.

I will post this drawing again once more work on the pine tree and background have been completed.

Burleigh Inn Pine Tree I - A Work in Progress

I just couldn't get into painting today so I decided I would do a little work on a pen and ink drawing; and I pulled out this one that I had started earlier this year when the KAGS Ourdoor Painters' Group spent the day at the Burleigh Inn located on Stoney Lake (see post on 08 June 2017).

I started by putting in a couple of the larger background trees on the far shore.

From there I came forward and indicated the rocks at the base of the pine tree and added a few grasses and growies in among the rocks.

Next I started on the main pine tree beginning at the top and working my way down the trunk.

I gradually was adding branches and needles onto the tree.

I will post this drawing at a later date once the pine tree has been completed.

Burleigh Inn I-V

Today I went on a paint out with the KAGS Outdoor Painters' Group to the Burleigh Inn located right beside Burleigh Falls.

It was too muddy for me to get down to the Falls safely, so I stayed by the Burleigh Inn at their marina and did some sketching.

Cindy helped me get set up at the end of the dock where I had a lot of things draw.

I started with a boat with lovely reflections that was moored at the end of the marina facing out at the lake.

Burleigh Inn I

To the right of me at the end of the dock was a mooring chain.

The chain was anchored in the pink granite rock face that ran down into the water.

The attachment bolt at the end of the chain was under the water.

I found it interesting the way the water distorted the position of the bolt.

It moved it to the side instead of directly following the line down beneath the water.

Burleigh Inn III

On the opposite side of the marina entrance there is a tall white pine which was the subject of my next sketch.

I started with the waterline at the bottom of the rock face and built the rock up to the base of the tree.

I put the trunk of the pine in first and then started to add the branches and pine needles onto the tree.

Next I put in the deciduous tree trunks beside the pine on top of the rock face with some grasses and growies.

Burleigh Inn IV

By then it was lunch time and all of us got together under the shade of the trees and relaxed for a little while.

Burleigh Inn II

After lunch I stayed in the shade and worked on a sketch of the rock face as it goes beneath the water and showing the rock through the crystal clear water of the lake.

Burleigh Inn V

For my last sketch, I chose to do the stone stairs leading down to the marina from the cottages. It was surrounded by ferns and shrubbery, with lights along the sides for night time.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork.

Burleigh Falls 19 and 20

Today was a hot 88F (31C) and humid 97F 36C day, so Ron and I decided to go canoeing up by Burleigh Falls.

We put the canoe in the water just below the falls and paddled around to the other side of the far shore which was directly across from where we launched the canoe.

On the other side was another waterfall which was a section of Burleigh Falls that most people do not see unless they are on the water.

As we headed up toward Burleigh Bay I did a sketch of the shoreline, and it wasn't long before Ron started fishing and let the current carry us back to the Falls.

On the way back, I saw another artist sitting on a rock sketching and I decided to do a sketch of the artist.

It wasn't long until we returned to our launch point below the Falls and headed home.

Burleigh Falls 14-16 - Three Works in Progress

The hot and humid weather continues with the temperature being 87F (30.6C) and with the humidity feeling like 98F (36.C).

Burleigh Falls 14

I thought taking a run up to Burleigh Falls would be an enjoyable day outside by the water and doing a few sketches.

Burleigh Falls 15

I worked more on sketches of the rocks and trees with a little of the water showing, rather than having the water as the main part of the sketch.

Burleigh Falls 16

I will post each of these drawing at a later date once they have been completed.

Burleigh Bay III-VIII - Six Works in Progress

Summer has definitely arrived bringing another hot humid and hazy day with the temperature reaching 84F (28.9C) and the humidity making it feel like 94F (34.4C).

Burleigh Bay III

What better way to spend a hot summer day than going out on the lake? So we loaded up the canoe and took a short drive to Burleigh Falls and launched the canoe well below the Falls at the far end of the parking lot.

Burleigh Bay IV

As usual we paddled up the lake with me taking a few pictures along the way when something interesting caught my eye and stopped to have lunch at a place where I could do a couple of sketches while we relaxed.

Burleigh Bay V

On the way back Ron fished while I did a number of sketches and took many more photographs.

Burleigh Bay VI

I must say there is nothing like concentrating on a sketch only to be disturbed my having a live fish flapping around beside your head waiting to be taken off the hook.

Burleigh Bay VII

Fortunately for me Ron only did that with the three large mouth bass and not with the one nice sized muskellunge while he hauled into the canoe. All of the fish were live released back into the lake.

Burleigh Bay VIII

I will post each of these pieces at a later date once they have been transferred to paper or canvas.

Shades of Summer Art Show

Today is the first half day at our show. In the morning the show is visited by some of the people either before and/or after attending the church service. Then the doors open at 12:30pm to the general public.

With the heat and humidity today along with it being the end of the weekend and the cottagers heading home we did not have large crowds, but a number did come out to see the show.

Since I had these two paintings pulled out yesterday of rushing water I thought I would continue working on them. In this case neither the one of Burleigh Falls (see post on 22 July 2013) nor the one of the waterfall (see post on 29 July 2013) had any sky showing in the painting.

Burleigh Falls 13

I put in the under paint on the rocks using various glazes of burnt sienna, raw sienna, alizarin crimson and French ultramarine blue.

I will post each of these paintings at a later date as more work on them has been completed.

White Water 1

Small items were sold from Diane Collins, JoAnne Connell Northey and Barbara McGregor.

Hopefully some of you will make it out to see the show.

First Day of the Shades of Summer Art Show and Sale

Burleigh Falls 6

Today was a typical bright, warm and sunny summer day. Although I really didn't expect too many people to come out to the show today as most would probably be out on the lakes, so needless to say I was surprised by the steady stream of visitors.

Burleigh Falls 8

With stopping to talk with the people I wasn't able to do very much painting and only managed to get a few skies painted in on some of the Burleigh Falls sketches I did last year (see posts on 12 July 2013 and 22 July 2013) that I will work on and post at a later date.

Burleigh Falls 10

Today an original painting was sold from Rebecca Bilcox as well as small items from Diane Collins and JoAnne Connell Northey.

Burleigh Falls 10-13 - Four Works in Progress

Burleigh Falls 10

These are the remaining sketches that I did on watercolour paper of Burleigh Falls (see post on 12 July 2013) from earlier this month.

Burleigh Falls 11

Once this series of paintings are completed it will show the many features of the fast flowing water, the rocks and the falls at Burleigh.

Burleigh Falls 12

I will post these at a later date as more work on them is completed.

Burleigh Falls 6-9 - Four Works in Progress

Burleigh Falls 6

Today was a nice warm sunny day and I decided to go out and do some sketching at Burleigh Falls.

Burleigh Falls7

I did most of the sketches on small pieces of watercolour paper that will be fairly easy to complete when I return home with the reference photographs I took at the same time.

Burleigh Falls 8

I will post these paintings as more work is completed on them as well as posting the remaining sketches at a later date

Whispering Waters - A Work in Progress

This is another painting I started from Neil Broadfoot's workshop last year ( see postings on 20 September 2010, 04 October 2010 and 18 October 2010).

The sky, background trees and water has been completed. The masking tape has been removed from the foreground and a small amount of the water rushing over Burleigh Falls has been indicated.

I will post this painting again once it is completed.

Burleigh Falls 4-5

These are two more value sketches of Burleigh Falls.

Either one could be worked up into a painting which would clearly show what the Falls are like with the rushing water pouring over the rocks.

Burleigh Falls 4 SOLD

I will probably do both of them a little later in the year, probably during the summer.

The pictures shown here are all 9" x 12” original conte drawings and are available matted and shrink wrapped for $40.00 each.

Burleigh Falls 5 SOLD

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork. I hope you will return often.

Rushing Water - A Work in Progress

This is another painting I have been working on from my sketches and photographs from Burleigh Falls with Neil Broadfoot.

This is right at the top of the Falls where the water is rushing over the rocks just before the drop.

There is still a lot more work to be done on this painting and I will post it as I continue to work on it.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Neil Broadfoot Workshop - Burleigh Falls

Today was spent at KAGS on the final day of a three day workshop with Neil Broadfoot.

We had two weeks to develop our final drawing using sketches made on location at Burleigh Falls and from any photographic reference we had from the pictures taken at that time.

We were shown how to transfer them to our watercolour paper so the pencil lines wouldn't be visible.

Neil demonstrated various ways of painting the granite rocks found at Burleigh and capturing the movement of rushing water as it flows over and around the rocks.

This is the painting that I worked on in class and will show once it is completed. I have another three drawings transferred down onto watercolour paper which I will paint at a later date.

Neil Broadfoot Plein Air at Burleigh Falls

The group met at Burleigh Falls for the second part of Neil Broadfoot's painting rushing water workshop.

It was a cold and very windy day and I was glad that I had stopped at Tim Hortons for an extra large tea to help keep my hands warm.

Neil demonstrated sketching and how to capture the movement of the water. Then we did our own value sketches before stopping to have a hot lunch at the local restaurant. Which helped get rid of our cold fingers and toes.

Then back out into the cold to try doing colour sketches in pastel, watercolour or acrylic. I found a somewhat sheltered spot from the wind just below a rock face and set up there.

I would peek my head up over the rock edge and take a look at what I was painting and then duck back down into the shelter of the rocks. This was my end result; I added a few more details once I returned home.

Racing Clouds is an original 14" x 22-1/2” framed watercolour available for $295.00.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.
