ACEO - Burleigh Rocks 1

Today I thought I would finish this painting that I had started last year (see post on 09 December 2019). All that it needed to be completed were the rocks in the foreground.

First I washed some of the rocks with alizarin crimson and while the paint was still wet I added a small amount of burnt sienna into a few areas.

As the paint dried I used a mix of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna and put in the shadows and cracks on the rocks.

On the other rocks I lightly touched them with a wash of Antwerp blue and burnt sienna and as it was drying I brushed in some alizarin crimson and then added the cracks in the rocks and the shadows with burnt sienna and a small amount of French ultramarine blue.

Lastly, I put a little alizarin crimson into the water below the rocks for reflections.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

Stoney Lake II - A Work in Progress

Today I wanted to work in pen and ink, so I pulled out my folder of drawings that were in various stages of completion and decided that I would start work on this one that I did while on the Stoney Lake Boat Cruise (see post on 19 September 2019) last year.

I started inking in the trees on the foreground islands and gradually moved to some of the trees on the islands in the background, followed by indicating the rocks of the cluster of little islands where the trees were growing.

I will post this drawing at a later date as more work on it is completed.

Burleigh Rocks 1 - A Work in Progress

Today Norma and I went to paint with the Lakefield Creative Arts Group. It is the first time we have been there since January.

Norma had a photograph she had taken earlier this year, when we went on the M/V Spirit of the Kawartha Boat Cruise on Stoney Lake that she wanted to paint and we decided that we would do our own version of the scene.

I took a small section of the picture to feature a grouping of the rocks close to the shore, while Norma decided she wanted to paint the entire area shown in the photograph.

Using French ultramarine blue with a small amount of Antwerp blue I brushed in the sky leaving a few area of white paper for the clouds and brushed in the water below the islands being careful to leave the foreground rocks without colour.

With various mixtures of raw sienna, burnt sienna, Antwerp blue and a small amount of aureolin, I painted in the far shoreline.

Next, I added some new gamboge to the various mixtures and add in the deciduous trees onto the islands on either side of the painting.

While the paint was still wet I dropped small amounts of pure burnt sienna in some areas pure cadmium yellow into others and some raw sienna to create texture in the foliage.

Once the trees on the island were dry, I used the remaining light green paint and added French ultramarine blue and raw sienna to darken the colour and painted in the pine trees on the islands.

Lastly, using a mixture of alizarin crimson and burnt sienna I painted in the rocks at the waterline of the islands.

I will post this painting at later date once I have finished painting the rocks.

Stoney Lake I - A Work in Progress

Today I had a little bit of time before I went out to run errands with Ron and I thought I would like to do a little bit of work on this drawing that I started last month (see post on 19 September 2019).

I started by putting in the pine trees first and as I was starting on the rocks it was time for us to leave.

I will post this piece at a later date once more work on it has been completed.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Stoney Lake I and II

Today Cindy, Norma and I took the lunch cruise with the new Stoney Lake Cruises.

We boarded the M/V Spirit of the Kawarthas, which is the largest cruise ship in the Kawarthas at 11:00 a.m. and will return at 1:00 p.m.

Needless to say we took our place on the upper deck so we could take photographs unhindered. I found a spot by the pilot house and spent most of my time there until we were called below for lunch.

Lunch consisted of fresh rolls, pasta salad, Caesar salad and a garden salad, chicken with seasoned rice and lasagna. This was followed by a dessert of butter tarts and a variety of freshly baked cookies.

Stoney Lake I

After doing a couple of drawings while below deck, I returned to the upper deck to take more photographs and enjoy seeing some of the over 1,128 islands as well as many of the famous buildings like the Glass House, Church on the Rock and the Ronnie Hawkins Estate to name a few.

Viamede Resort Cottage Reflections I - A Work in Progress

I wanted to do a little more work on this drawing that I started last year (see post on 14 September 2017).

Starting on the left side, I put in the closer deciduous trees and added a few growies.

Next, I indicated the trees in the background, followed by putting in the pine trees.

I will post this drawing at a later date once more work on the cottages have been completed.

Burleigh Inn Pine Tree I - A Work in Progress

I just couldn't get into painting today so I decided I would do a little work on a pen and ink drawing; and I pulled out this one that I had started earlier this year when the KAGS Ourdoor Painters' Group spent the day at the Burleigh Inn located on Stoney Lake (see post on 08 June 2017).

I started by putting in a couple of the larger background trees on the far shore.

From there I came forward and indicated the rocks at the base of the pine tree and added a few grasses and growies in among the rocks.

Next I started on the main pine tree beginning at the top and working my way down the trunk.

I gradually was adding branches and needles onto the tree.

I will post this drawing at a later date once the pine tree has been completed.

Viamede Resort I-III

Today the KAGS Outdoor Painters' Group went to the Viamede Resort in Woodview, Ontario.

When Cindy, Norma and I arrived in the upper parking lot at the Viamede Resort, I stopped to take some photographs of the chapel on the property where numerous weddings have been held over the years since it was established in 1877.

From there we went back across the parking lot and started down the paved pathway to the docks on Stoney Lake.

I didn't go down onto the dock, but stayed in the patio area just above them.
The lake was very calm and I took photographs of the cottages on its edge that cast long reflections across the water.

Viamede III - Flower Pot

I sat down at one of the picnic tables and started sketching the cottages before the wind came up and blurred their reflections.

Once my drawing of the cottages was completed, I started on a sketch of the large wooden barrel planters at both entrances to the patio.

They were filled with ivy, dark purple petunias, bright pink geraniums and salvia.

What intrigued me was the use of two hawsers (a heavy rope used for mooring) running between the posts that surrounded the patio giving it a nautical theme.

Which, is fitting since the docks and boat house are right there.

Viamede II - Planters

Once I finished that sketch I noticed a flower pot on the upper level of the boathouse.

It had a black eyed Susan vine growing out of the pot and climbing up the corner post on the rail fence around the deck.

Viamede I - Cottage Reflections

At a later time I may turn each of these drawings into either watercolour or acrylic paintings.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork.

Upper Stoney Lake I

Today I am sitting the last day of Art on Kent before it closes its doors for the last time.

While sitting the gallery I worked on a drawing that I had started a while ago (see post on 24 August 2015).

I was at Quarry Bay Beach on Stoney Lake and after a nice swim and lunch I relaxed and did a couple of sketches of the nearby islands.

I started with the land in the background by putting in the distant trees with vertical strokes adding in the closer trees with more definition and then putting in the rocks beneath the rocks.

Working on both sides of the drawing I started by putting in the rocks and adding the shadows.

Next I added all the pine and cedar trees onto the islands and then I put grasses and growies at the base of the trees and in various place in among the rocks.

Lastly I added the water ripples and some the reflections from the pine and cedar trees.

This original 4-1/2" x 9” pen and ink drawing when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $40.00.
