Wine and Beer - Two Works in Progress

These are the remaining two sketches that I started in the Still Life class at KAGS earlier this month (see post on 24 January 2019).

This one was of the display featuring the wine bottles and various wine glasses.

We had five different types of wine glasses, a couple of smaller cut crystal glasses, two long stemmed tulip glasses, one of which was tinted blue and a tall Champagne flute.

Ginger ale was put into a couple of the glasses to imitate sparkling wine.

There were two bottles of Vidal Icewine one from Jackson-Triggs and the other from Reif Estate Winery to complete the wine display.

The last grouping features beer.

The beer mug was filled part way with a cola to imitate beer, but of course it was not the right colour.

There was an O'Keefe's beer chalice and an Old Vienna stange glass.

There was a bottle of Budweiser and another of Barking Squirrel set in behind one of the glasses and at the base of the beer bottles there was a lemon and a lime to add colour to the display.

I will post each of these two drawings at a later date as more work on them is completed.

Wine Glass and Candles 1 and Wine Bottle, Glasses and Candle 1

These are the other two drawings that I started in yesterday's Still Life Class at KAGS and finished today.

In the first one, I started by placing the wine glass where I wanted it in the drawing.

Next I put in the candlestick on the right side of the drawing followed by the candlestick on the left side, which I placed partially behind the wine glass.

I then put in the spiral candles into the holders and added the flame.

The next drawing featured the plain wine bottle without the basket and tassels.

I placed it on the left side of the drawing and added one of the wine glasses in front.

Toward the right of the centre I put in a candlestick with a spiral candle and even though we are not allowed to have lit candles in the building I added the flame onto the candle.

Next I added in two wine glasses in front of the candle.

Wine Bottle, Glass and Bowl 1 and 2

Today at KAGS the theme for the Still Life class was Candlelit Dinner.

We had a wonderful assortment of interesting things to draw and paint.

We had a silver vase filled with red roses, a candlestick with a red candle, two different wine bottles, two crystal trays, two place settings, complete with wine glasses, napkins and silverware and salad bowls.

I moved things around and did some small drawings.

In the first one I did the tall dark bottle with a metal basket around it and a couple of tassels, the wine glass and the salad bowl.

On the second drawing I used the other wine bottle which was quite interesting.

It had a pour spout and a wicker base covering the bottom half of the bottle and twine winding around from the neck of the bottle just below the cork to just above the base of the pour spout.

Next I added in the wine glass and then placed the salad bowl by the bottle.

Toys and Gift Wrapping - Three Works in Progress

Today I was in the Still Life class at the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio in the morning and sitting the Gallery in the afternoon.

There were a wide variety of things to paint and I decided to do three small sections of the display.














Don't Drink and Drive 1

The first was of a bottle of wine, a small snowman, a teddy bear and a couple of toy cars with a gold ribbon running between them.














Gift Wrap 1

The second was of various gift boxes and bags with a roll of gold ribbon.















Santa's Bag 1

The third on was of Santa's bag filled with toys and wrapped gifts.

As more work is completed on each of the three paintings, I will post them at a later date.

Hallowe'en Holler - A Work in Progress

Today I spent the day at the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio.

In the morning I was in the Still Life class, where the theme was "Trick or Treat - It's Hallowe'en" and in the afternoon I sat the Rural Outlook exhibition.

I had my choice of a wide variety of masks, bowls of candy, leaves, bottles and a full moon with bats silhouetted against the bright orange.

I started by putting in the full moon, minus the bats and then sketched in the mask beside a wine bottle.

Around the bottom of the mask and bottle I put in a number of brightly coloured maple leaves.

I will post this painting at a later date once I have completed the mask.

Feast for the Eyes

Today I was sitting at Art on Kent in Lindsay, Ontario for the last day of the "Feast for the Eyes" show.














I was surprised that there wasn't a larger number of paintings in the exhibit and only two photographs.










But with the wide variety of styles and media it created a very interesting display.














As usual the paintings were beautifully presented to the public by the show hanging committee.














It was also a very busy day at the Gallery with many people coming in to see the show as well as a couple of artists bringing in their art work for the next show called "Affordableism".















The new show starts on 24 Nov and runs through to 17 Dec 16 when the Gallery closed for the Christmas season and reopens in the New Year on 05 January and runs through until 14 Jan 17.














If you would like to meet some of the artists, the opening reception is on 26 Nov 16 from 1-3p.m. and I hope to see some of you there.

Glass on Mirrors - Two Works in Progress

Today in the Still Life class at the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio our theme was Glass on Mirrors.

There were two distinct groupings and both were challenging subjects, especially when some of the glass was cut crystal and etched glass; and the others were transparent and reflected the colours from their surroundings.














Crystal Reflections I

The first one had a plain goblet, a blued glass with tiny bubbles inside the glass sides, a tall patterned green vase, a large cut crystal candy dish and a small etched glass bowl containing pieces of candy all of which was reflected on the mirror.














Half Full or Half Empty?

The second one had two wine glasses, a bevelled water pitcher which reflected the surrounding colours and a couple of bottles of wine, one was half full and both had some interesting colours showing through the liquid.

I will post each of these paintings at a later date one more work on them has been completed.

Norfest 2014

It was a very busy day for me with having to go to Toronto first thing in the morning with the threat of freezing rain which fortunately didn't happen. We only received rain which with the temperatures slowly dropping throughout the day changed to snow.











After returning home I packed up the Blazer and headed to Norwood to set up my tables at Norfest which will open tomorrow.













I look forward to the show tomorrow and having some time to work on a few small paintings.

Wine Bottles and Fruit - A Work in Progress

It looks like winter is just not going to leave with having received another 4" (10cm) throughout yesterday with the temperature plunging to -8F (-22C) overnight and the wind chill bringing it to a bitter -20F (-29C).

I decided not going to go into the still life class today at KAGS, instead Idid a lot of the work around the house as well as finding a little time to do a bit of work on the piece I had started last week (see posting on 06 March 2014).

I put in the two green grapes that were in front of the pear and darkened the shadows under the fruit a little more. Then I sketched in the striped cloth on which the still life was placed.

I will post this painting at a later date once more work has been completed.

Wine Bottles and Fruit - A Work in Progress

Today in the still life class at KAGS out theme was Wine Bottles, Cheese and Fruit.

We had two separate displays which were needed since we had a fairly large class this morning.

I chose to work from the smaller display and omit some of the extra glasses and wine bottles shifting a few things around until I had the items that I wanted and was pleased with the arrangement for my painting.

I started on the pear to get it set into place as a grounding for the rest of the painting and added some of the shadows beneath the fruit.

I will post this painting at a later date after more of it has been completed.

Romance - A Work in Progress

There were many items set out for our theme of 'Romance" in today's Still life at KAGS.

I chose a small section of what was there and decided to go with the Valentine's Day card, the strawberries and the wine bottle and crystal glasses.

Glass Reflections - A Work in Progress

Margaret brought in today's still life at KAGS. She certainly set out to create two very challenging displays.

I chose the first one with a lemon and lime together with a couple of bottles, a water pitcher and a half filled tumbler. All of the elements were placed on a mirror, which reflected back their images and the blue back cloth backdrop.

Once I had blocked in my sketch I started painting the lime first followed by the lemon and their reflections.

I noticed that the reflected back drop was a lot darker in colour than it appeared with the light shining on it and painted the section between the lemon and line to see how strong contrast it would be.

Using a wash of raw sienna I put in some of the reflected colour from the table on the left side of the clear bottle, into the glass tumbler where the liquid was and into the area the light touched on the bottle at the far right of the painting.

Using a mixture of French ultramarine blue, Antwerp blue and burnt sienna I painted in the lip on the water pitcher and a little bit of detail on the handle.

With a pale was of Antwerp blue I indicated some of the areas on the first bottle where the back drop showed through the glass.

A lot of work has to be done in order to finish this painting and I will post it again once more of it has been completed.

Wine Bottles and Glasses - A Work in Progress

Today we held the first Still Life class at KAGS.

We had two different arrangements, one of vases and bowls with Chinese lantern plants; the other of wine bottles and glasses.

I chose to do the wine bottles and glasses.

At break the members discussed what direction we would like to go with the still life class and decided that rather than stick with traditional still life themes we go with a variety of interest themes. So over the course of the rest of the winter and spring we will be doing just that.

I will post this sketch once I have it completed.

Wine Bottles and Grapes

I find still life relaxing and enjoy moving the various elements of the composition around to create different effects.














How the light creates highlights and shadows on the folds of the cloth and the way different degrees of transparencies in the glass have such interesting reflections and distortions.
