Feast for the Eyes

Today I was sitting at Art on Kent in Lindsay, Ontario for the last day of the "Feast for the Eyes" show.














I was surprised that there wasn't a larger number of paintings in the exhibit and only two photographs.










But with the wide variety of styles and media it created a very interesting display.














As usual the paintings were beautifully presented to the public by the show hanging committee.














It was also a very busy day at the Gallery with many people coming in to see the show as well as a couple of artists bringing in their art work for the next show called "Affordableism".















The new show starts on 24 Nov and runs through to 17 Dec 16 when the Gallery closed for the Christmas season and reopens in the New Year on 05 January and runs through until 14 Jan 17.














If you would like to meet some of the artists, the opening reception is on 26 Nov 16 from 1-3p.m. and I hope to see some of you there.

Autumn Harvest - A Work in Progress

This is another painting I started in the Still Life class at KAGS last month where the theme for that class was fruits and vegetables.

A vine of wild grape ran down the side of a panel and I did a small section of the display that had a glass bowl filled with wild grape, red, yellow and orange peppers; at the base of the bowl were another pepper and a small turnip.














Before the break I started painting the orange pepper at the base of the glass bowl and forgot to take a photograph of the painting at that stage.

After the break I finished the pepper and worked on the turnip and completed it, but I feel the pepper needs a little more work before it is finished.

I will post this painting at a later date once I have completed the glass bowl.

OSWOA - Pears in Blue Bowl

This is a painting I started a while ago (see post on 30 April 2010) in a class with Margaret Roseman.

The pears and bowl were pretty much complete and only required a small amount of detail to be added.

The paper around the pears and bowl down to the tablecloth was wet with clear water and the background was painted in with a mixture of Antwerp blue, French ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson and a touch of burnt sienna creating a soft, warm grey.

 











Once the background was dry the tablecloth was painted using various mixtures of French ultramarine blue, Antwerp blue and burnt sienna.

Norfest 2014

It was a very busy day for me with having to go to Toronto first thing in the morning with the threat of freezing rain which fortunately didn't happen. We only received rain which with the temperatures slowly dropping throughout the day changed to snow.











After returning home I packed up the Blazer and headed to Norwood to set up my tables at Norfest which will open tomorrow.













I look forward to the show tomorrow and having some time to work on a few small paintings.

Wine Bottles and Fruit - A Work in Progress

Today in the still life class at KAGS out theme was Wine Bottles, Cheese and Fruit.

We had two separate displays which were needed since we had a fairly large class this morning.

I chose to work from the smaller display and omit some of the extra glasses and wine bottles shifting a few things around until I had the items that I wanted and was pleased with the arrangement for my painting.

I started on the pear to get it set into place as a grounding for the rest of the painting and added some of the shadows beneath the fruit.

I will post this painting at a later date after more of it has been completed.

Sunflowers, Squash and Onions - A Work in Progress

This is one of two paintings I started during the Still Life class at KAGS last month.

It was an interesting arrangement of a basket filled with sunflowers, together with a pumpkin, turban squash and onions.

Study in Red 1 and 2 - Two Works in Progress

Earlier today I went grocery shopping and after putting away the produce I noticed that the basket on the counter that I put the fresh fruit into had a red and white gingham cloth in the bottom and most of the fruit were in it were in various shades of red.

The sunlit was coming in the kitchen window so I moved the basket onto the kitchen table and added a couple of tomatoes to the arrangement and started to draw the still life.

After doing the sketch for the first one I changed the angle of the painting as the natural light coming through the window had changed and I did a second sketch.

 I will post each of these still life paintings as I start to add colour into the sketches.

Sweet and Sour - A Work in Progress

This was an interesting exercise with cut crystal candy dishes, decanters, vases, glasses, fruit, foil wrapped chocolate, pine boughs, winter berries and poinsettia all reflected into a mirror.

I chose to do a small corner of the entire display, using the two candy dishes, some of the chocolate and the lemons and pears.

There is still a lot more work to do on this painting, especially all the details on the cut crystal which is going to take a lot of thought before I start working on that. I will post this at a later date once more of it has been completed.

Studying - A Work in Progress

Today I was at the still life class at KAGS and our theme was studying.

It was an interesting arrangement with old books, a candelabra, a human skull, some dried leaves and a trio of quince.

It took a long while to get the drawing put down on the paper as there were a lot of details to capture especially on the candelabra.

Rather than start one of the elements that I would not be able to finish, I worked on the quince.

I will post this painting at a later date once more of it is completed.

Exotic Fruit - A Work in Progress

Today I was at the Still life class at KAGS where we had a number of different displays of fruit in wicker baskets as well as in glass bowls and plates.

I chose the one with papaya, Japanese pears, grapes, pomegranates, strawberries and lemons.

I will post this painting at a later date once more work on it has been completed.

Strawberries

The strawberries finally dried enough that I could paint them (see posting on 06 May 11). I brushed all the strawberries with Napthol red first leaving the calyx area unpainted.

With most acrylic paint I could have painted the entire strawberry and let it dry within 15 minutes, but with the Golden open acrylic paint it stays wet for at least 4 hours and I wanted to finish the painting today.

Using Hansa yellow I blended it into the highlight areas of the strawberries. I blended Dioxadine purple into the shadowed side of the strawberries and onto the table top for the cast shadows.

The calyx was painted first with green gold as a base colour and then sap green was used for blending in the mid tones and shadows.

Sap green was also painted into the darkest areas of the cast shadow.

Strawberries is an original 8" x 10” framed acrylic and is available for $195.00.

Cirtrus - A Work in Progress

This is another piece I started in the Golden Workshop at KAGS (see posting 06 May 11).

The background walls have been completed, as well as the orange and the lemon. The under painting for the lime and the tablecloth have been finished.

I will post this painting again once I have done more work on the painting.

Strawberries - A Work in Progress

Today I was at the Golden Acrylic Workshop at KAGS.

Having taken this workshop last year (Study in Sienna posted on 21 September 10 and my posting on 27 September of Red Rubber Ball) and thoroughly enjoying it I wanted to try it again.

This time instead of doing a pear (see Single Pear posted on 17 September 10) using the Golden Heavy Body Gel I decided to do a grouping of strawberries instead.

It wasn't dry enough to paint the strawberries so I painted in the background and table top before taking it home.

I will post this painting once I have completed the strawberries.
