Loon Call Lake XI-XIV

After hearing the weather forecast calling for clear skies a temperature of 84F (29C)  with humidity at 90F (32C) it seemed like a good day to go out on the lake.

While Ron got everything together and put into the car then loaded the canoe, I made our lunches and gathered my pencils and sketch books and did the barn chores.

It wasn't long before we were heading up Highway 28 and deciding on which lake we were going to spend the day.

We decided on Loon Call Lake as the last time we were there was in 2015 and it would nice to see what changes have been made in the last five years.

One of the cottages at the end of the lake that looked like it was abandoned had been given a facelift; and around the point from it the owners of that cottage had added a four foot tall lighthouse, of which I did  a sketch.

By then it was time to break for lunch and enjoy the warmth of the sun and the gentle breeze, before we would slowly make our way back to the boat launch.

Ron had been enjoying his day as well, he caught four largemouth bass and a sunfish, all of which were safely removed from the hook and carefully returned to the lake.

In one inlet there was a small tie up at the water and a "goat track" leading up over the rocks to an outhouse and higher up was a small cottage at the very top of the rock face.

On this sketch I am not sure whether to do it as a vertical to show just how far up the cliff you have to go to the reach outhouse or leave it as a horizonal sketch. Time will tell.

The Old Outhouse 1 - A Work in Progress

Today is our last full day at the Knoepfli Inn, we will be leaving for home tomorrow morning after breakfast.

Since the weather was sunny and warm with the temperature making it up to 61F (16C) and no wind.

After breakfast I decided I would work on this painting of the old outhouse that I started last year (see posts on 01 October 2018 and 04 May 2019).

During the morning I worked on the getting the outhouse finished as I wanted the sunlight shining on it instead of having it back lit.

Time passed quickly and before long the bell rang calling us in for lunch.

After lunch I took the time to take some photographs of Ahmic Lake, the Knoepfli Rapids and the Magnetawan River for future paintings.

I went back to the cabin and did a little more on the painting by starting he trunk of one of the foreground trees.

I will post this painting at a later date as more work on it is completed.

The Old Outhouse 1 - A Work in Progress

I thought I would do a little work on this piece that I had started while in Magnetawan at the Knoepfli Inn.

First I wet the paper in the background, then carefully wet the area around the outhouse and the two main trees leaving them dry and finished by wetting the foreground.

Using aureolin, I brushed the paint into the wet areas to create the look of sunlit foliage in the background and the under paint for the brightly coloured leaves in the foreground.

Then I set it aside to dry while I mixed the colour for the tree trunks and the boards on the outhouse.















Before I could get further on the painting Ron came by and needed my help raking up the branches from the willow tree that had broken and fallen during the winter.















It took the rest of the morning and after a short break for lunch we worked through the rest of the afternoon and finally had all the branches raked up, placed onto tarps or piled into the wheelbarrow. By then it was time for supper.















I will post this painting at a later date once I have painted the boards on the outhouse and the foreground tree trunks.

The Old Outhouse 1 and Fallen Birch 1

We had a very interesting day at the Knoepfli Inn which started early in the morning, around 3a.m. when one of the members in the group woke me to see if I would take her to the hospital as she was having an allergic reaction to her medication.

Together Norma and I got her safely to the West Parry Sound Health Centre and stayed with her until about 11a.m. they decided to keep her overnight for observation and more testing.

After getting a list of the things she would like us to bring to her for her overnight stay when we return in the evening, we left and headed back to the Inn to arrive in time for lunch.

After lunch, the sun decided to come out and I headed down the trail behind our cabin heading to the Magnetawan River. I stopped along the way to do a sketch of the old outhouse near cabins 6 and 7.

Then I continued down the trail to the Magnetawan River.














Fallen Birch 1

At the beach near fire pit, I did a sketch of one of the big birch tree that had fallen across the path
that runs beside the river, making it difficult to continue along the trail.

I decided that I would do a sketch of the fallen birch that blocked the trail.

I will post each of these sketches at a later date as more work on them is completed.
