Loon Call Lake VII

Today I was sitting at A Place For The Arts in Bancroft, Ontario.

The new show in the Annex, "Exhibition of Colour" was being hung, featuring the art of Jewell Allington and Jane Hall, both are friends I made through my time at the "old" Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio.

After opening the Gallery and doing the various chores that all sitters should do to keep the site looking clean and tidy, I took out my artwork and continued to work on this drawing that I had started a number of years ago (see posts on 14 September 2014 and 10 December 2016).

It was another fairly quiet day for a Wednesday so I ended up having plenty of time to work on this piece.

I started by completing the cottage and followed by putting the rocky shoreline in to the left side, putting the shadows to the rocks and adding some grasses and growies.

Next, I worked on putting in the pine trees on the rocky area to the right of the cottage, followed by adding the rocks, their shadows and the grasses and growies.

Lastly, I put the reflections of the trees into the water.

This original 6" x 9" pen and ink drawing when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $50.00.

Loon Call Lake XI-XIV

After hearing the weather forecast calling for clear skies a temperature of 84F (29C)  with humidity at 90F (32C) it seemed like a good day to go out on the lake.

While Ron got everything together and put into the car then loaded the canoe, I made our lunches and gathered my pencils and sketch books and did the barn chores.

Loon Call Lake XI

It wasn't long before we were heading up Highway 28 and deciding on which lake we were going to spend the day.

Loon Call Lake XII

We decided on Loon Call Lake as the last time we were there was in 2015 and it would nice to see what changes have been made in the last five years.

Loon Call Lake XIII

One of the cottages at the end of the lake that looked like it was abandoned had been given a facelift; and around the point from it the owners of that cottage had added a four foot tall lighthouse, of which I did  a sketch.

Loon Call Lake XIV

By then it was time to break for lunch and enjoy the warmth of the sun and the gentle breeze, before we would slowly make our way back to the boat launch.

Ron had been enjoying his day as well, he caught four largemouth bass and a sunfish, all of which were safely removed from the hook and carefully returned to the lake.

In one inlet there was a small tie up at the water and a "goat track" leading up over the rocks to an outhouse and higher up was a small cottage at the very top of the rock face.

Loon Call Lake XIV

On this sketch I am not sure whether to do it as a vertical to show just how far up the cliff you have to go to the reach outhouse or leave it as a horizonal sketch. Time will tell.

Loon Call Lake II

Today some of the KAGS Outdoor Painters' Group are taking our annual painting trip to the Knoepfli Inn, located at 5484 Highway #124, in Magnetawan, Ontario.

We had made arrangements with owner Bea Kolman that we would arrive in time to have lunch.

After lunch, we unpacked and then split up to go out to sketch, paint or take photographs on the property.

Even though it was overcast and threatening to rain I went out and took a number of photographs of the roadway from the Inn to our cabin, down to the Magnetawan River at the bottom of the hill.

It wasn't long before we could hear the bell ringing calling us for supper at the Inn.

After supper I wanted to work on something, but I wasn't in the mood to paint; so I pulled out this drawing that I had started a number of years ago (see posts on 14 September 2014, 13 May 2016 and 23 February 2017) while canoeing on the lake.

A couple hours later I had finished all the trees and rocks on the right hand side of the drawing and added all the small details that were needed to complete the left side of the piece.

This original 5-3/4" x 9" black and white drawing when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $50.00.

Loon Call Lake Turtle I

I thought I would like to complete this drawing of a little painted box turtle sunning himself on a fallen cedar tree trunk that I started a few of years ago (see posts on 27 September 2015 and 07 February 2018) while we were canoeing on Loon Call Lake.

The first thing I did was to redraw the turtle in order to get the proportions of the turtle and the shape of the shell correct.

I gradually added the stripes onto the head and neck, then darkened the turtle's shell leaving the light areas between the plates and finished the turtle by adding in the legs.

Lastly, I added a little more bark onto the cedar tree trunk and put in a few more ripple lines in the water beneath the tree trunk.

This little, original 3-1/2" x 9” pen and ink drawing when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $30.00.

Loon Call Lake Turtle I and Clear Lake V - Two Works in Progress

I wanted to work on this drawing that I had started a number of years ago (see post on 27 September 2015) while we were out on the lake canoeing.

It didn't take me very long to put in the fallen tree trunk that on which the turtle was sunning himself and then I set it aside.

Loon Call Lake Turtle I

I still wanted to do more drawing  so I pulled out this piece that I started a long time ago (see posts on 09 June 2013, 16 May, 06 July and 16 December 2016).

Clear Lake V Cottages

I did a little more work on the shoreline and added in a few more ripples into the water. I will post each of these drawings as more work on them is completed.

Loon Call Lake III

Today I was at St. Matthew's Church in Buckhorn, with the Tuesday Buckhorn Painting Group.

I wanted to change the watercolour painting I have had at the church since the summer with a different piece. The one I chose is an acrylic painting called "Strawberries".

I brought my pencil sketches and pen and ink drawings, that were in various stages of completion to work on and hopefully get at least one completed.

I chose this one which I had started a number of years ago, and have been working on this year (see posts on 14 September 2014, 23 February and 09 October 2017).

Since I usually work from left to right on a drawing, I began with the trees and foliage on the left, worked my way across in behind the boathouse and finished with the trees on the right side.

I did the same, this time putting in the rocks and shadows from the left to the right side of the drawing.

Lastly, I added some shading onto the boathouse, followed by adding in more reflections and ripples into the water.

This original 6" x 7" pen and ink drawing when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $50.00.

Loon Call Lake III - A Work in Progress

I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! While I am waiting for the turkey to finish cooking, I thought I would work on a drawing that I started a number of years ago (see posts on 14 September 2014 and 23 February 2017) when we were canoeing on Loon Call Lake

Starting with the boathouse, I finished the tin roof and the boards on the side of the building.

From there I started putting the rocks in along the shoreline on either side of the boathouse.

To ground the rocks I added some ripples into the water beneath them and through the reflections of the boathouse.

Next I added the large pine tree beside the boathouse and then started to put in the larger pine trees into the background, but before I could do more the timer went off and I had to baste the turkey and put the vegetables on for supper.

I will post this drawing on a future date once I have completed the rest of the rocks and the water.

Loon Call Lake II and III - Two Works in Progress

Today I pulled these two sketches that I started while canoeing on Loon Call Lake a number of years ago (see posts on 14 September 20014 and 13 May 2016).

On the first one I started by putting the shadows on the underside of the clouds, followed by indicating the tops of the clouds with thin lines.

From there I put in the two large pine trees closer to the front of the island and lightly indicated the trunks of the middle ground large pine trees.

On the background rocks, I added the shadows first and gradually worked my way around the base of the rocks below the larger pine trees adding more shadows and details..

Loon Call Lake II

I put some of the ripples into the water along the shoreline.

I started to put in the deciduous trees on the right side of the drawing, but found that I was getting tired and decided to take a break.

After having a cup of tea and a light lunch, I decided rather than overwork the first drawing that I would do a little work on the second drawing that was on the same piece of paper.

Loon Call Lake III

I started by putting in the front section of the boathouse and then indicated the boards and the door.

Next I put the reflections from the boathouse into the water below; and in the area between the bottom of the door and the water I darkened the water to reflect the dark interior of the boathouse.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork.

I will post both of these drawings at a later date when more work on each of them has been completed.

Rock Faces 1 and 2 - Two Works in Progress

Today I thought I would work on these two paintings that I had started last year (see post on 05 November 2016).

The first one is of an inlet on Long Lake near the boat launch.

I used a streaked in wash of Antwerp blue for the sky and then I set it aside to dry.

Next on the second painting which is of Loon Call Lake; I put in the sky with a mixture of Antwerp blue and French ultramarine blue.

I changed the name of this first painting to The Lookout 1 from Rock Face 2.

I changed the name of the second painting from Rock Face 1 to Granite Cliffs 1.

I will post each of these paintings at a later date as more work on them has been completed.

Loon Call Lake VII - A Work in Progress

Today I woke up to a very thick heavy fog; it was so dense that when I went out to do the barn chores I could barely see the outline of the east barn. It was the type of fog that would probably last most of the day and the temperature hovered around 24F (-4.4C).

Once I returned from playing hide and seek in the fog with Kyora I thought I would work on one of the drawings I started a while ago (see post on 14 September 2014), while canoeing on Loon Call Lake.

I started with the background trees and lightly indicated them, followed by adding in a few tops of pine trees here and there to create interest.

Next I put in the cottage on the island and around the base I added a few grasses and growies.

Around the cottage I started putting in the pine trees until Ron came in and we had to go out and run some errands.

I will post this drawing at a later date once more work on it has been completed.

Rock Face 1 and 2

This area is known for its pink granite stones, boulders and rock cliffs as well as the clean, dark waters of its lakes and rivers.

We often go canoeing on many of the lakes in the Kawartha Highlands Signature Site Provincial Park.

I have sketches, drawings and paintings of a number of them, including Coon Lake, Loon Call Lake, Wolf Lake and Long Lake which are the most recent.

Next year I hope to explore three or four more lakes from in the Park.

Rock Face 1

This first one is from Long Lake up the first inlet near the launch site.

Rock Face 2

This is from another inlet near an island on Loon Call Lake.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Loon Call Lake IX

I had a little bit of time before I had to go out and meet with some friends but I still wanted to work on a painting.

I looked at a number of black and white drawing that were in various stages of completion and pulled this one out to finish (see posts on 26 September 2015 and 13 May 2016).

It needed more grasses and growies added on top of the rocks and more definition to the waterline at the base of the rocks.

I added the water ripples and reflections into the water.

Once I press the paper to remove the wrinkles, erase the pencil lines and mat and shrink wrap this original 6" x 11” pen and ink drawing will be available for $50.00.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork.

Loon Call Lake II and IX -Two Works in Progress

Today I saw my first tree swallow. They are late returning from the south as are many other species; but is nice to have them back.

With their return it had me thinking about being out on the lakes and sketching while in the canoe.

I pulled out a couple of sketches from previous years (see posts from 14 September 2014 and 26 September 2015).

I started with the most recent one and inked in the three tall pine trees on an island.

Loon Call Lake IX

I put in the rock outline, the waterline and then added the small bushes and growies around the base of the trees before setting it aside to see what more it needed.

Loon Call Lake II

I started on the next one by putting in the background shoreline, some of the more prominent trees in the distance and the waterline. But before I could go any further I had unexpected company arrive and I had to put everything away.

I will post each of these paintings at a later date as more work on them is completed.

Loon Call Lake VIII

While today brings us a mix of sun and cloud the temperature reached 74F (23.3C) and the humidity made it feel like 77F (25C). It is the fourth day of unexpectedly warm weather which seems to increase by two degrees each day where in other years we have had snow already on the ground.

I started thinking of a warmer days and being out in the canoe on one of the lakes in the area.

I pulled out the sketches I did from earlier this year when we were on Loon Call Lake (see post on 26 September 2015).

Then I put in the outline of the top of the rocks to give a ground for the tree and growies.

Next I put in the tree, which had a split trunk near to the top showing that it suffered some form of trauma in the past from the elements.

The growies and small bushes were added to the base of the tree.

I put in the dark water line at the bottom of the rocks and added some shadows onto the rocks.

Lastly I put the reflection of the tree into the water.

This original 6" x 11” pen and ink drawing when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $50.00.
