ACEO - Dusk 10

Today I had some time before I had to go out and run a few errand so I pulled out this piece that I had started last year (see posts on 09 March and 27 July 2017).

With a mix of French ultramarine blue and raw sienna, I painted in the pine trees on the islands.

Next I lightened the green mix and put it into the lake to create water ripples.

Lastly I softened the edge of the islands.

ACEO - Dusk 7

I wanted to finish this little painting that I had started last year (see posts on 09 March 2017 and 09 May 2018).

For the trees and their reflections in the water, I used a mixture of French ultramarine blue and raw sienna.

I added burnt sienna to the mixture and put in the rocks along the shoreline and some of the dead trees scattered throughout the deciduous trees.

ACEO - Dusk 8

After a week without high humidity, we are right back at it with a temperature of 81F (27C) and the humidity making it feel like 91F (33C). I wonder how long this heat wave will continue.

I decided that I would work on this little painting that I had started last year, (see posts on 09 March and 27 July 2017).

I put the pine trees onto the large island at the far side of the lake using French ultramarine blue and raw sienna.

I darkened the water with the tree colour to create movement on the surface of the lake.

Dusk 11 and 12 - Two Works in Progress

Today I didn't have a lot of time to work on paintings, so I pulled out a couple of pieces from last year (see post on 09 March 2017) that had the background already painted in and wanted to at least indicate what I wanted to put into the painting.

For the first one, I decided where I would place the waterline and then added the tree tops above it leaving a little room at the bottom for the rocks above the water.

On the right side I placed a land mass with a number of pine trees.

On the second one I again placed in the waterline leaving room for the rocks and indicated the tree tops.

I then added an island on the left side of the painting and put pine trees on the rock.

I will post both of these paintings at a later date once they have been completed.

ACEO - Dusk 13

Today I thought I would finish this painting that I had started last year (see post on 07 July 2017).

I started by painting the pine trees on the hill using various greens made from Antwerp blue, French ultramarine blue, raw sienna, new gamboge and cadmium yellow.

With a dark made of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna, I added the dead trees, the tree trunks and some of the branches.

Now that the pine trees were completely finished it was time to add in the ground beneath them.

Using various combinations of alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, both of the blues and raw sienna I put in the rocks that would show through the grasses and growies.

Lastly, I added the grasses and undergrowth beneath the trees and in and around the rocks.

Dusk 7 - A Work in Progress

Today I was going to work on a couple of small paintings and try to get them finished.

I pulled out this little piece that I had started last year (see post on 09 March 2017).

Since I liked the colours in the top of the painting, I decided to put in a low horizon line so I could have a lot of sky showing.

Next I added a few rocks on the shoreline, followed by placing in some of the larger pine trees on the shore.

Before I could go any further with this painting I had friends come over and I will post this piece at a later date once it has been completed.

Dusk 5 and 6 - Two Works in Progress

I didn't have a lot of time today to work on my art before having to go out and run errands, so I pulled out a couple of watercolour backgrounds that I started earlier this year (see post on 08 March 2017).

I thought that I would sketch in the land areas, the lakes and the some of the larger trees, so when I come back to this painting I can get it completed.

On the first one I put in the horizon line and thee trees on the far shore.

With the light coloured area on the right hand side, I decided to use that as rocks and added three pine trees on top.

For the next background I decided to turn it upside down and use the lighter area at the bottom for a base to put in a few large pine trees.

Next I added a few trees into the middle ground area between the trees.

ACEO - Dusk 9

Today is a rainy day and I thought I would stay inside and work on a painting, so I pulled out this piece that I had started earlier this year (see post on 09 March 2017).

I mixed various greens using combinations of Antwerp blue, French ultramarine blue, new gamboge and raw sienna and painted in the trees on the far side of the lake.

Darkening the green mixes I put in the pine trees on the island in the foreground.

With a dark of blue and burnt sienna I painted in the tree trunks.

Using burnt sienna and a touch of alizarin crimson I put in the rocks on the island.

Using raw sienna and burnt sienna I put in the grasses below the trees.

ACEO - Dusk 14

We arrived at the Knoepfli Inn, located at 5484 Highway 124 in Magnetawan, Ontario yesterday and spent most of the afternoon settling in and taking photographs. I am limited by my leg as to where I can go on the property but hopefully by next year it will be a lot better and I can get down the hill to the river behind the cottages.

Bea Kolman mentioned at breakfast this morning she would really like it if for next year she could have some paintings of the various cottages for the Scenes of Magnetawan" show for next year. While the light was good in the morning I most my time out taking photographs of the cottages on both sides of the road, then I took pictures of the Inn, the farmhouse and the boathouse.

After lunch I spent some time working on a number of sketches of various birch trees on the property.

This evening after supper went down to the dock by the boat house, which is on Ahmic Lake at the start of the Knoepfli Falls which become the Magnetawan River at the end of the rapids under the Highway 124 bridge.

I thought I would use the opaque watercolor paint that I had used earlier this year, as it seems to lend itself to painting late evening scenes.

I had to work quickly so I kept the painting fairly simple before I lost the light as the sun set.

Dusk 8 and 10 - Two Works in Progress

Today as I was waiting for a couple of my friends to come over and pick me up so we can go to Curry's and buy some art supplies, I took out these two little paintings that I had started earlier this year (see post on 09 March 2017).

On the first one I indicated the far shoreline across the lake.

For now I will leave the foreground alone, as I am not quite sure if I want to put land and trees there or rocks.

On the second one which has a lot more sky, I put land on the horizon line.

Then I indicated a small island closer to the foreground.

Now that my friends have arrived I will put both of these paintings away for now and I will post them again at a later date once they have been completed.

Dusk 3 and 4 - Two Works in Progress

I pulled out a couple of watercolour backgrounds that I started earlier this year (see post on 08 March 2017) and thought that I would sketch in the land areas and the lakes.

For the first one, I wanted it to seem as though overlooking a series of islands on a large lake.

On the second one I needed to turn the piece upside down.

From there I indicated the horizon line and added in the trees on the distant shoreline.

I added in another layer for trees into the middle area of the lake.

From there I added a closer line of trees against the water.

Next I added in a couple of large pine trees into the foreground.

I will post each of these paintings at a later date as more work on them is completed.

Dusk 13 - A Work in Progress

Today is another hot 84F (29C) and humid day 95F (35C) so I decided to stay indoors and pulled out the opaque watercolour paint set that I tried a while ago for a series of skies that later became landscape paintings.

There were still some of the colours I had used in some of the previous "dusk" paintings so I thought I would do another.

It didn't take long for me to put in the sky. I then set it aside to dry and while I was waiting I relaxed with a cup of tea.

Next with a pencil I lightly sketched in the placement of the trees and the land.

I had some unexpected company arrive before I could do any more work on this piece so I will post this painting at a later date once it has been completed.
