New Exhibit at A Place For The Arts
Today I am sitting at A Place For The Arts in Bancroft, Ontario.
They just did a change over of the artwork in the Gallery on Monday, so I brought in replacement paintings of the same size as the ones I have on the wall.
This way the new pieces will fit right into the places where they were placed in the new exhibit without me having to hammer in nails and change the design of the show.
I had just returned to the lower level of the Gallery when my first customers arrived.
I let them know we had a new exhibit in The Annex Gallery on the upper level as well as having many new pieces of art and gift items throughout the rest of the Gallery.
While they were there, I brought out some of my miniature abstracts and put labels on their easels to get them ready to be displayed once the customers left.
I wandered around the Gallery trying to decide where to place then and after seeing there were a number of things on the window shelf and a lot of empty space, I thought that would be the ideal location.
I chose the right side window as there was only one small tray with miniature carvings and nothing else.
First, I placed three pieces to the right side of the tray.
Next, I placed the remaining four pieces to the left side of the tray.
From there I went onto the upper level and moved my painting of the sunset silhouette to another location in the centre display. As I returned to the lower level I had a couple more customers come into the Gallery.
While they were going through the Gallery I put one of my five ACEOs into each of the five small gold frames I brought with me.
I thought it would be good to have some small pieces to be offered for sale for Christmas gifts.
I walked round the gallery to see where I should place the miniature paintings.
After the customers left, I decided I would put them in the two glass display cases on the main floor.
I placed three of them into the further back case, where I put one on each of the different shelves.
The remaining two where put onto different shelves on the closer glass case.
Now that all my new pieces were displayed in the Gallery, I decided to take a break and have a late lunch.
After lunch, the older paintings were placed into their containers ready to be taken to the car.
Next, I went around and cleaned off any fingerprints that had gotten on the glass of the new paintings.
Lastly, I put the new labels by the paintings on the shelves and on the walls.
I am not used to the Gallery being so quiet on a Wednesday.
Usually, I have so many people coming through that some time I didn't have time to eat lunch.
Needless to say, this time I didn't bring anything to work on so I spent the rest of the afternoon, tidying things around the Gallery before it was time to close and go home.

Gold Lake and Catchacoma Narrows
Today we decided we were going to go to another new lake and decided to try Gold Lake.
We went to the boat launch at Catchacoma Narrows and although there was a group of six canoes getting ready to go camping for the week, they made room for us to quickly launch our canoe and head down to the lower end of Catchacoma Lake.
From there we entered to top end of Mississauga Lake through Rattys River and realized that we didn't want to explore the top end of the same lake we were at last week and turned back to go through the other branch of the Narrows and go into Gold Lake.
Once we made it into Gold Lake, we decided to have lunch first before we started fishing or sketching.
Gold Lake
Gold Lake, like Mississauga Lake has a maximum depth of 130' (39.6m), but its average depth is 82' (25m). it has Lake Trout, Large and Small Mouth Bass, Rock Bass, Sunfish and Perch.
It wasn't long before Ron was getting ready to fish and I was sketching the shore which jutted out into the lake from the inlet where we were.
Unfortunately for Ron, he wasn't having much luck catching fish here, so we slowly headed back toward the boat launch. On the way back we passed the group of campers heading out toward Gold Lake and we waved and wished them a wonderful trip.
Catchacoma Narrows
Once we returned to the boat launch there were three other boats lined up to get out of the lake so, rather than wait in line we continued up the Catchacoma Narrows to Catchacoma Lake.
When we reached Catchacoma Lake Ron continued to try and catch a fish in this lake which also has Lake Trout, Large and Small Mouth Bass, Rock Bass, Sunfish and Perch.
Like the other lakes in the area it is a deep lake having a depth of 144' (44m) with the average depth being 66' (20m) and like the other lakes, Ron wasn't able to catch a fish.
By the time we returned to the boat launch we were able to get the canoe out of the water and onto the trailer without having to wait.

Mississauga Lake I-V
Today, Ron and I decided we would take the canoe and go find a new lake up Highway 507 and we came across Mississauga Lake.
It didn't take us very long to get the canoe off the trailer, the gear loaded, into the lake and we were on our way.
Mississauga Lake I
Even though as we headed out the wind started up and the clouds rolled slowly rolled in we decided to continue.
The lake is fairly large with a surface area of 1,452 acres (588 hectares) and deep with a maximum depth of 130' (39.6m) the average depth being 58' (17.7m).
Mississauga Lake II
The lake is known for Lake Trout, Small Mouth Bass and Large Mouth Bass and Ron was hoping to get a few of them.
We soon pulled into an inlet and Ron started fishing and I took out my sketchbook and started on a drawing of a birch tree at the end of a spit.
Mississauga Lake III
After taking a number of reference photographs I started on a sketch of the shore line of the inlet. I didn't get very far along on it before Ron decided to go to another area where the fish may be biting.
We continued on our way up the lake and stopped in another inlet and Ron went back to fishing while I started another sketch; but since he wasn't having any luck there we decided to take a break and have lunch.
Mississauga Lake IV
After lunch we continued along the shoreline and came across an area which had the stumps of many large cedar trees that had died and fallen due to the rise of the water level many years ago.
I referred to the area as the "Cedar Tree Graveyard" due to the lack of any live trees.
Mississauga Lake V
After getting the "graveyard" blocked in I turned my attention to a spit of land coming out into the Lake at the end of the area and I did a quick sketch of the tall pines and cedars.
The wind at this time was getting a lot stronger and we decided we had better get back to the boat launch before we get soaked. On the whole it was a good day even though Ron didn't catch any fish.

Eels Lake VI and VII - Two Works in Progress
Today we decided to take the pontoon boat out again and go the Eels Lake which has an excellent boat launch.
With all the problems we have had with the supposedly "overhauled" motor, Ron put the electric motor onto the boat just in case we ended up stranded with the motor deciding not to work in the middle of the lake.
The motor started after two tries and Ron let it idle while we set up the canopy and moved things around on the deck, but as soon as he tried to engage the motor it quit and from there it wouldn't even try to start.
It didn't surprise me that we would end up using the other motor; so I helped Ron get it set up and we were finally ready to go out.
Eels Lake VI
We went the opposite direction than we usually go and found an inlet which Ron thought would have fish and I had some nice scenery to sketch.
About half an hour later we slowly headed back toward the dock. When we were in sight of the dock we saw that there were a number of boats lined up, so we when back through the first inlet with Ron finding a place to fish.
Eels Lake VI
While we were waiting Ron caught two nice bass which just goes to show that you don't have to go far from the dock to catch fish.
I will post each of these sketches at a later date as more work on them is completed.

Chemong Lake X and XI - Two Works in Progress
Today was another hot 82F (28C) and humid, 93F (34C) and although they are calling for thunder storms tonight, I doubt that they are going to appear.
Ron wanted to take the pontoon boat out again and see if the motor was going to work any better, so we went back to Chemong Lake.
It took at least four tries until he finally managed to get it to go into gear and take us out into the lake. This time we went up the lake to the very end.
Chemong Lake X
Once we made it to the end, we stopped to have lunch before turning around to head back to the boat launch.
On the way back Ron stopped to try his luck at fishing, while I worked on a sketch of a nice area with bent and twisted cedars, sunken logs and lots of strong contrast with sunlight and shadows.
Chemong Lake X
From there we moved further down the lake as Ron continued fishing, letting the current carry us along which didn't give me much time to sketch.
I will post each of these drawings at a later date as more work on them is completed.

Wolf Lake V-VIII -- Four Works in Progress
With it being a nice sunny day we decided to take the canoe and go out on the lake for the day.
As we headed up Highway 28 we were talking about which of the many lakes in the Kawartha Highlands Signature Site Park and decided that we would go on Wolf Lake.
It didn't take long for us to unload the canoe, put our gear into it and head out onto the lake. We paddled up the lake until we came to one of the inlets and I started sketching while Ron got his rod out and cast his line.
Wolf Lake V
I had barely gotten started on my sketch when he caught a nice sized bass, so I had to stop what I was doing and carefully take it off the hook and release it back into the lake.
It wasn't long before we left the inlet and went onto the lake again and headed further up the lake and went to the far side of an island.
Wolf Lake VI
Once again I started on a sketch beginning with a tree stump sticking out of the water just off shore of the island and then, Ron caught a small bass. So, I had to stop and take it off the hook and release it.
I barely had time to pick up my pencil before Ron caught a larger medium sized bass for to me to remove it from the hook and release it.
Before I could clean my hands there was another medium sized bass for me to unhook and release.
Wolf Lake VII
We moved further up the lake and stopped between the shore and a large group of islands and had lunch. Then we turned the canoe around and once again I worked on a sketch while Ron went back to fishing and before long, he caught another medium sized bass and I had to set it free.
We found another inlet and at this one Ron wasn't catching a fish as soon as he cast out the line. I was able to spend some time on my drawing where I put in the island and indicated some of the land on the far side of the lake before he caught another small bass.
Wolf Lake VIII
It wasn't long before we returned to the boat launch and headed were soon heading back home.
I will post each of these drawings again when more work on them has been completed.

Chemong Lake VII-IX - Three Works in Progress
With it being a little on the windy side after lunch, we decided to take the pontoon boat out on Chemong Lake. We just had the motor overhauled at Paris Marine and picked it up on Saturday.
We loaded everything onto the boat and put it into the lake; I walked it along the stone water break while Ron parked the trailer.
We were finally ready to go and the motor didn't want to work.
At first the motor wouldn't start and when it did it wouldn't stay running.
After about 20 minutes of playing with it, Ron finally got it started and it stayed running so we headed down the lake. I had misgivings about the motor continuing to work.
Chemong Lake IX
When we arrived where Ron wanted to fish and islands for me to sketch, we stopped and dropped the anchor. As usual Ron fished while I sketched one of the islands.
We saw a heron ahead of us and it flew in behind the next island and with Ron not having any luck catching a fish we decided to follow him; but the motor once again decided not to co-operate and it took a little while to get it running and stay running.
Chemong Lake VII
Finally, we made it around the next island and the heron was still there. We stayed well away from him, but I was able to get a few nice photographs and I worked on a sketch of him and the area he was in while Ron fished.
It was time to head back to the boat launch and this time it only took two tries to get the motor started and stay running. Ron stopped one more time to try his luck fishing while I sketched and he was rewarded with a rock bass.
Chemong Lake VIII
It was getting late and we headed back to the boat launch; this time the motor started and stayed running on its first try.
Once we reached the boat launch the wind had become stronger and it was hard getting the boat alongside the dock. As I jumped onto the dock I lost my balance and ended up going for an unexpected swim. The upside was I got the boat tied to the dock and Ron went for the trailer and I was able to help get the boat easily onto the trailer.
I will post each of these sketches at a later date as more work on them is completed.

Haying
With it being nice today, we decided that we would bring in the hay for the year.
With the equipment Richard has at the farm for loading hay, it didn't take long for the hay to be put onto the trailer. Strapping the load of hay down so we could take it home took almost as much time.
Once we were back at the barn, Ron removed the strapping and we set up the hay lift and began putting the hay into the mow.
We were back getting the next load within an hour.
Then we repeated the cycle all over again.
Finally, by the end of the day we had our hay for the year safely put into the mow.
While Ron covered the hay lift motor, I went to feed and water the horses.
While he dropped the trailer I went to the house to start supper.
After supper we relaxed outside happy that another chore was completed.

First Teaching Assignment
Going through some old files I came across this drawing of a swam that I did when I was in Grade One and it was dated on the back 21 June 1962.
It was because of this drawing that I ended up having my first art teaching assignment. I was asked to teach a class of Grade Six students on how I did my drawing of the swan.
I had them start by placing the water line followed by doing the numeral 2 to place the top of the swan on the paper.
Next, they put a ball at the start of the number for the head and added a triangle for the bill.
To slightly below the centre of the ball (head) they drew the bottom of the neck and came slightly forward and brought the chest down to the waterline.
From there I extended the bottom of the two slightly upward for the top of the tail.
Below that we put in a curved line for the bottom of the tail and brought it down to the waterline.
Just back of the neck we put in the wing and added the large feathers.
Lastly, the top of the leg was put in slightly above the waterline.

Lovesick Lake XV-XIX
Today we decided it would be a good day to take the canoe and go out on the lake for the first time this year. We picked Lovesick Lake as there is usually plenty of parking and it has easy access to the lake.
It didn't take long to get the canoe into the water, our gear loaded and we were on our way up the lake.
Lovesick Lake XV
We went up the main channel until we came to this island with the cottage on it and I worked on my sketch while Ron started fishing.
The current slowly carried us back toward the main channel until Ron moved us back, so I could continue with my drawing.
Lovesick Lake XVI
With Ron having no luck catching a fish in this spot, we moved on to another location and I worked on this sketch of a seagull on a rock eating a fish while Ron tried his luck.
After a while with him still not having any luck catching a fish, we decided to have our lunch as we continued to watch the gull eating his meal.
Lovesick Lake XVII
We let the current take us through the channel that has a multitude of close to the surface submersed rocks where motor boats cannot go through without damage to their props.
Although, today there was one man who knew exactly how to go through with his small boat and when he had to lift the motor out of the water to avoid damaging it; so you know he has spent a lot of time finding the way through the channel safely.
Lovesick Lake XVIII
We stopped at a small inlet just before entering the main channel, before slowly making our way toward the boat launch.
It was near the channel marker Buoy 234 the that Ron finally caught his first fish. It was a nice sized bass and I carefully removed it from the hook and released it back into the water.
Lovesick Lake XIX
We moved across the channel to the far side of one of the smaller islands out of the way of boat traffic and Ron caught his second bass, which I carefully released back into the lake.
From there we returned to the boat launch and went home after a very enjoyable day our on the lake.

Easter Egg Hunt
Today Christine, Kyle and Aaron came over for an Easter egg hunt for Aaron and to let him ride on his lawn mower before having Easter supper.
When they came into the house I gave Aaron his first clue to find his Easter eggs.
He had to follow the clues in the house first.
From there he had to go outside and find more "treasure" around the house first and then onto the barn.
He stopped before going into the main barn to make friends with Tai, who wasn't sure at first if he wanted to get to know this strange person he hadn't seen in a while.
It wasn't long before he decided he wanted the attention and made friends with Aaron.
From there Aaron found more Easter surprises in the main barn before heading upstairs into the workshop and the hay loft.
The clues then had him going outside to check the various vehicles for more Easter treats.
Followed by returning back to the house for more places on both sides of the house up and down the stairs.
Once the last treat was found, Aaron wanted to see if he had grown tall enough to be able to reach the brake on the lawn mower so he could drive it on his own. Unfortunately, he still needs to grow a little taller.
It was soon time to come in for supper and we had an enjoyable meal before they had to leave to go back home.

ACEO - Cottage Country 1
We are supposed to get another up to another 2" (5cm) of snow today on top of all the other snow we have had this week.
After doing the barn chores and feeding the birds I decided to paint. I pulled out this piece that I had started quite a while ago (see posts on 05 June 2014 and 05 May 2019).
I started by putting in the distant shore on the horizon line with burnt sienna.
Next, I worked on the cottages, starting with the roof which I painted with various greys made of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.
With a wash of burnt sienna I painted both cottages, being careful to leave the windows without paint.
Darkening the burnt sienna slightly I indicated the logs on the cottages.
Next, I darkened the roof colour and added more details to the roof, the door jamb, and window sills on the cottage. At the same time, I indicated the tree trunks around the cottages.
To finish the cottages I used cadmium yellow for the lights shining through the windows.
Mixing various green using Antwerp blue, French ultramarine blue and raw sienna, I used a sponge and applied the green paint to the deciduous trees.
This was followed by painting in the pine trees around the buildings.
I added in the grasses and growies around the foreground cottage with mixtures of raw sienna, burnt sienna and new gamboge.
Lastly, I painted the rocks using various mixtures of burnt sienna, alizarin crimson and French ultramarine blue.
If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.
The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Long Lake Cottage XIII - A Work in Progress
Today it is snowing, with the temperature at 25F (-4C) and the winds blowing the 2" (5cm) of snow at a steady 12mph (20km/h) with gusts of 24mph (39km/h) making it feel like (-10C) 14F.
With living on the top of a hill there is nothing to stop the full force of the wind driving the snow into your face.
After doing the barn chores, filling all the bird feeders and having breakfast, I thought I would like to work on this drawing that I had started a couple of years ago while canoeing on Long Lake (see posts on 16 September 2019 and 20 July 2020).
Before I can finish inking in the drawing I need to do some work on the cottage to square it up and get the proportion correct.
I started on the main part of the cottage, straightening the walls, squaring up the windows, putting on the roof, adding the shingles and chimney.
Next, I started on the mud porch, trying to get its roof under the overhang of the main roof and making it looked like it was an addition to the cottage.
Before I could finish the porch I had friends drop in for a visit.
I will post this drawing again once I have the cottage and remaining landscape drawn.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Lovesick Lake XIII - A Work in Progress
I see that my goshawk is still around. Last year, he worked his way through almost 20 squirrels; this year with not as many squirrels available he did take out a blue jay.
I didn't see him do it but, the jay feathers and the imprint in the snow told the story.
With it being Ron's birthday today and the kids bringing Chinese food for supper I didn't have a lot of time to get into anything that was going to take a lot of set up to get working on a painting.
So I decided that I would work on some of the sketches I did last summer while we were out on the lakes in the canoe or on the pontoon boat.
I chose this one of Lovesick Lake (see post on 08 June 2020) and started working on putting in the far shoreline.
From there, I put in some of the trees on the island and it wasn't long before Christine and Kyle arrived bring supper.
Christine had baked a "turtle" cake for him, as she felt that at age 65 he would slow down to turtle speed which, we both knew would never happen.
While Kyle went own to the barn to get Ron, we got everything set out for supper.
We had an enjoyable supper, followed by singing "Happy Birthday" to Ron , who managed to blow out the candles with no problem.
After dessert was finished, we decided to spend the rest of the evening playing Chinese checkers.
Time passes quickly when you're having fun and all too soon, they had to go home.
It won't be long before it is Christine's birthday.
