New Exhibit at A Place For The Arts

Today I am sitting at A Place For The Arts in Bancroft, Ontario.

They just did a change over of the artwork in the Gallery on Monday, so I brought in replacement paintings of the same size as the ones I have on the wall.

This way the new pieces will fit right into the places where they were placed in the new exhibit without me having to hammer in nails and change the design of the show.

I had just returned to the lower level of the Gallery when my first customers arrived.

I let them know we had a new exhibit in The Annex Gallery on the upper level as well as having many new pieces of art and gift items throughout the rest of the Gallery.

While they were there, I brought out some of my miniature abstracts and put labels on their easels to get them ready to be displayed once the customers left.

I wandered around the Gallery trying to decide where to place then and after seeing there were a number of things on the window shelf and a lot of empty space, I thought that would be the ideal location.

I chose the right side window as there was only one small tray with miniature carvings and nothing else.

First, I placed three pieces to the right side of the tray.

Next, I placed the remaining four pieces to the left side of the tray.

From there I went onto the upper level and moved my painting of the sunset silhouette to another location in the centre display. As I returned to the lower level I had a couple more customers come into the Gallery.

While they were going through the Gallery I put one of my five ACEOs into each of the five small gold frames I brought with me.

I thought it would be good to have some small pieces to be offered for sale for Christmas gifts.

I walked round the gallery to see where I should place the miniature paintings.

After the customers left, I decided I would put them in the two glass display cases on the main floor.

I placed three of them into the further back case, where I put one on each of the different shelves.

The remaining two where put onto different shelves on the closer glass case.

Now that all my new pieces were displayed in the Gallery, I decided to take a break and have a late lunch.

After lunch, the older paintings were placed into their containers ready to be taken to the car.

Next, I went around and cleaned off any fingerprints that had gotten on the glass of the new paintings.

Lastly, I put the new labels by the paintings on the shelves and on the walls.

I am not used to the Gallery being so quiet on a Wednesday.

Usually, I have so many people coming through that some time I didn't have time to eat lunch.

Needless to say, this time I didn't bring anything to work on so I spent the rest of the afternoon, tidying things around the Gallery before it was time to close and go home.

Solo Show at A Place For The Arts

Today Norma went with me to A Place For The Arts in Bancroft, Ontario to help hang my Solo exhibit in the Annex at the Gallery.

The show will run from 01-26 July. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 I will not be able to have an opening for this show.

Once all the paintings were bought into the building, we closed the door and decided what we would do first.

Norma chose to work on removing the lettering the previous exhibitor had rudely left stuck on the wall.

In the meantime, I brought the paintings from the main Gallery level up into the Annex, unwrapped them all and set the paintings out along the walls where I felt they should be hung.

I took over from Norma and did some of the scrapping while Norma opened the windows and brought out some cold beverages and a snack while we took a short break.

Norma went back to scraping the lettering off the wall and I went and dragged out the ladder so we could reach the track to attach the chains.

Next, I brought out one of the large folding tables for the back wall and then went and got a small folding table for the opposite wall. Then, I gathered up the chains and hooks for the long brick wall and found the hammer and nails for all the other walls and panels.

On the one small wall by the entryway, I hung my name sign and the painting of Tom. For the small brick wall to the right, I decided I would hang the painting of Christine once we got all the chains hung on the long brick wall.

By then Norma had removed all the lettering. It was a hard and thankless task and I was glad she was willing to do it as I would not have had the patience, as I was already annoyed that the person was that inconsiderate. We then took a well deserved break and had lunch.

After lunch, I tried first to attach the chains to the rail up near the ceiling, but being short I could not reach the track so, I held the ladder and Norma had to go to the top to attach the chains.

I started by hanging the paintings on the chains, beginning with a grouping of black and white pieces, drawings in graphite pencil and sketches in pen and ink.

While Norma started at the back and used the hammer and nails to hang paintings on the wooden door at the back of the Annex.

From there it was fairly easy to hang groupings of paintings on both of the long walls.

I continued to work along the brick wall while Norma worked on the panelled wall opposite me hanging paintings.

About halfway along the walls, it was time to take a break.

While we looked at how the exhibit was coming together and decided if changes would need to be made.

We made a couple of changes and then continued working our way along our walls.

Once my wall was finished, I moved the long table into position below the window on the back wall, I covered it with a solid tablecloth first so the marks on the table wouldn't show through the lace tablecloth that I placed on top.

Next, I put the rack for shrink wrapped paintings in one corner and filled it with paintings. To complete the table I put a couple of easels with paintings on them and a couple of other free standing small paintings.

From there I set up the small folding table and set it below the paintings at the opposite end of the Annex and covered it with a tablecloth.

I put the two carved leather plates onto easels and decided it was enough and didn't want it looking cluttered.

Now that everything was hung and set up, we went around and cleaned glass, straightened all the paintings and made sure all the tags were with the correct paintings.

Put everything away, made sure all the lights were working, swept the floor, packed up all the containers and wrapping, loaded the car and locked up the galley and headed home.

If you have a chance please come out and enjoy the art exhibit.

Christmas at A Place For The Arts

Today my friend and fellow artist, Norma MacEachern came with me to A Place For The Arts in Bancroft.

It was nice to see the Christmas display for the front window had been set up. The two large trees were hung with a wide variety of handmade Christmas ornaments available for sale and displayed among the the twinkling lights.

The floor was covered with a blanket of glittering snow upon which was decorations for sale.

I went around opening up the Gallery and turning on the lights.

As Norma helped me with the various duties of sweeping, dusting and watering the plants I noticed that a few more of my smaller paintings had been hung in the Gallery.

When I went upstairs to the Annex it was nice to see that it too had been decked out with Christmas decorations, as well as a few strings of twinkling lights.

With a new exhibit in the Annex, some of my paintings had been moved and placed in a grouping on one wall.

It was an enjoyable day with many people coming through the Gallery and to view the new show in the Annex.

Time passed quickly and before long it was time to close the Gallery and head home.

New Exhibit at A Place For The Arts

Today I am sitting at A Place For The Arts in Bancroft, Ontario.

It was a fairly busy day, with many of the people who came in were there to see the new exhibit which was hung yesterday.

Next week the Christmas decorations will be set up along with the lights and ornaments hung on the trees.

This time my art is scattered throughout the Gallery, some on the main level and the others in various sections of the Annex on the upper level.

One of my paintings was placed in the Annex with another one which also featuring birch trees.

On the panel to the left of the entryway to the Annex was a small grouping of three of my paintings and the one of the teddy bear had a red bow placed on it to match the bow on the bear.

Another of my paintings was in the back section of the left Annex together with works by a couple of other artists.

On the main level my large painting was hung in a space by itself.

If you have a chance please, come out and enjoy the show. Gallery hours for November and December are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

New Show at A Place for the Arts

Today I went up to A Place For The Arts in Bancroft to help hang the new show.

I was told that I could use the same space that I had my artwork in previously.

First I put the two small paintings in the same place which made the switch easier.

On the large panel I started by hanging the sailboat at the top and this was followed by putting the two paintings that were in the aluminum frames below.

I had to decide how I would place the rest.

I moved them around a number of times before finally deciding on having the larger one to the inside of the panel and the two smaller ones on the outer edge of the panel one on top of the other.

If you have a chance, please come out and enjoy the new exhibit.

The Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and on all holiday Mondays.

Abandoned Farm - A Work in Progress

Today I am gallery sitting at A Place for the Arts, in Bancroft, Ontario.

After doing everything that needed to be completed to open the Gallery I thought I would work on this painting that I recently came across while going through an old box of paintings I found in the attic (see post on 10 October 2013).

I started by adding some trees into the background and worked my way forward by adding a few closer trees.

Next I began working on the farmhouse adding  shadows around the windows, door and under the eaves.

I was just starting to do some work on the barn when a number of people came into the gallery and the rest of the day continued to be busy.

I will post this painting at a later day once more work on it has been completed.

2019 Spring Show at A Place for the Arts

Today I went to my first meeting with the A Place for the Arts Group who exhibit their work at 23 Bridge Street West, in Bancroft, Ontario.

It is also the first time I will see how my paintings were hung in the Gallery they are located.

Since I wasn't able to be there to hang my exhibit I had set them out in a horizontal format at home, not realizing that my space was vertical.

Jane did an excellent job of hanging the paintings in the space that I had available.

The meeting was quite interesting in that they are also a not-for-profit and a co-operative gallery, very much like the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio.

They are a smaller group having around 40 members and each member is required to sit one day per month whether or not they display any artwork.

The Gallery is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday through to Sunday and closed on Monday and Tuesday.

My first shift will be next month and I will have another member there with me at the beginning of my shift to show me the ropes.

I think I am going to enjoy being a member of this art group.
