Morning Sky 7-10 Four Works in Progress

Today Cindy Allan, Norma MacEachern and Diane Collins took my paintings for me to The Douro-Dummer Library Art Gallery, at  425 Douro Fourth Line Road, in the Hamlet of Douro, Ontario to hang the Countryside Art Group's exhibit.

The show runs from 28 February - 30 April 2017, with the Opening Reception being held on 03 March 17 from 7-8p.m.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to be there, but I hope you will be able to come out for the reception or to view the exhibit.

Morning Sky 7

In the meantime, I thought I would like to work with the semi opaque paint again, that my friend gave to me last year.

I started by mixing the colours I wanted to use in the paintings, a beige of brown and yellow, a dull green of blue and beige, a dark green of blue, yellow and a touch of brown, a pink of red and white, a peach of red and yellow, a mauve of red, blue and white, pure yellow and a light blue made with blue and white.

Morning Sky 8

Next I wet the paper and began blocking in basic shapes on each painting, starting with the peach in the sky to keep something in common with all four pieces.

On some of the skies I added a little of the pink colour, on some I added the mauve, others I added some light blue and in a few I added a little bit of pure yellow.

Morning Sky 9

On one of the paintings I put in a little bit of water with the light blue and a shoreline with the beige.

I also added a few hills into the background of the same painting with the mauve.

Morning Sky 10

Next I started adding in some trees using various combinations of the dull and the dark greens.

I will post each painting at a later date once they are completed.

Pink Sky 6 - A Work in Progress

Today was going to be a very busy day and I am so very fortunate to have such good friends as Cindy and Norma for without them I do not know how I would have managed.

They are going to put up my new paintings in at Rolands' and while they are there, they will take down my current paintings and take them to the Douro Dummer Library Art Gallery and hang them for me for our upcoming show.

While I waited for Christine to come and get me so I could go and see my doctor to have the more than fifty staples removed from my leg, I worked on drawing in the trees.

I will post this piece later once more work on it has been completed.

ACEO - Industry 3

This is the last of three pieces I started a while ago (see post on 22 August 2016) and wanted to finish.

I started by putting in the top area of the sky above the toxic emissions with Antwerp blue, and then added in the warning lights on the smoke stacks and some of the buildings witrh cadmium red and cadmium yellow.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

Loon Call Lake II and III - Two Works in Progress

Today I pulled these two sketches that I started while canoeing on Loon Call Lake a number of years ago (see posts on 14 September 20014 and 13 May 2016).

On the first one I started by putting the shadows on the underside of the clouds, followed by indicating the tops of the clouds with thin lines.

From there I put in the two large pine trees closer to the front of the island and lightly indicated the trunks of the middle ground large pine trees.

On the background rocks, I added the shadows first and gradually worked my way around the base of the rocks below the larger pine trees adding more shadows and details..

Loon Call Lake II

I put some of the ripples into the water along the shoreline.

I started to put in the deciduous trees on the right side of the drawing, but found that I was getting tired and decided to take a break.

After having a cup of tea and a light lunch, I decided rather than overwork the first drawing that I would do a little work on the second drawing that was on the same piece of paper.

Loon Call Lake III

I started by putting in the front section of the boathouse and then indicated the boards and the door.

Next I put the reflections from the boathouse into the water below; and in the area between the bottom of the door and the water I darkened the water to reflect the dark interior of the boathouse.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork.

I will post both of these drawings at a later date when more work on each of them has been completed.

Four Seasons 3 - Four Works in Progress

Today was a foggy, grey day but the temperature 48F (9C) is remaining fairly mild for February.

I pulled out this set of the four seasons that I had started a couple of years ago (see post on 14 April 2015) and wanted to put the sky into each of them.

Spring 3

The first one I put in a grey sky using French ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and a small amount of alizarin crimson.

Summer 3

On the second one I used a mix of Antwerp blue with a small amount of cobalt blue.

Autumn 3

For the third one I used a wash of cobalt blue.

Winter 3

On the last painting used a mix of Antwerp blue and French ultramarine blue.

I will post each of these paintings at a later date after I put in the land on each side of the road and the roadway.

Autumn Rapids 1 - Work in Progress

Today I wanted to work with acrylic so I pulled out some of my partially completed canvases and chose this one that that I had started many years ago (see post on 11 October 2010).

I began by adding more colour and texture to the bark on the maples trees using mixtures of burnt sienna, ultramarine blue and titanium white.

Using the same colours for the maples, I added some dead tree trunks into the background on the far side of the river.

I darkened the foreground rocks slightly and mottled the colour on them so they were not just one flat shade of grey.

Now it was time to add the grasses and growies into the foreground. For this is put in the base layer with mixtures of raw sienna and burnt sienna.

From there I added ultramarine blue to the base colours and added in various shades of green throughout the foreground.

Using various mixtures of Cadmium red, cadmium yellow, Hansa yellow and alizarin crimson I added a little more colour onto the maple trees on the far side of the river and then added the bright colours into the tops of the foreground trees.

Next I added a few smaller trees at the base of the birch trees, and then scattered some fallen leaves throughout the grasses and on top of the rocks.

Lastly, I added some maple leaves throughout the background as though they had fallen from the branches and were carried away by the wind.

I will post this painting at a later date once it has been completed.

Clear Lake VII

I felt like working on the drawing today that I had started a number of years ago (see posts on 09 June 2013 and 30 December 2016) while canoeing on Clear Lake.

I started by working back and forth on both sides of the drawing by putting in the distant trees and rocks at the far side of the lake.

Next I put in the pine tree trunks, branches and needles on each of the small islands and I finished all the rocks next including adding the shadows.

Lastly I added the growies and grasses on top of the rocks.

This original 6" x 8-1/4" pen and ink drawing when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $40.00.

ACEO - Fence Posts 5

I wanted to finish a painting today so I pulled out this piece that I had started last year (see posts on 26 July and 08 December 2016).

Using various greens of French ultramarine blue, Antwerp blue, aureolin, raw sienna and cadmium yellow I put in the clump of coniferous trees in the field behind the barbed wire fence.

With a mix of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna I put in all the grooves on the weathered fence posts.

Using Antwerp blue and aureolin I brushed in some of the moss on the posts.

I used pure burnt sienna for the barbed wire fencing.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork.

Shadows I - A Work in Progress

Unbelievable, it is snowing yet again. This morning the temperature when I got up to do the barn chores was 33F (.5C) and raining, but in a few hours the temperature has dropped to 28F (-2C) and now we have rain and snow mixed.

I decided I wanted to think about summer so I pulled this drawing that started a couple of years ago (see post on 26 May 2013), but the more I looked at it the more I knew that it needed a background put in behind the rock.

With a pencil I lightly drew in some water behind the rock and then indicated a rock on the shoreline; which was followed by adding in some small bushes and growies on top and behind the rocks.

It was at this point that I was told I would be able to go home this afternoon and I will post this drawing at a later time.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork.

Grass Huts I - A Work in Progress

This was one of a number of sketches that was in one of the pads of paper Ron and Christine brought in for me the other night.

These sketches were all from when I was in Cuba a few years ago for two weeks, staying at the Tryp in Cayo CoCo and the Iberostar in Cayo Guillermo.

I started on the first grass hut by putting in the wooden uprights, followed by the cross members and then the face boards.

Next I put the palm fronds onto the roof to get most of this open air building finished.

I wanted to do more on this drawing but I was tired and had to put this sketch away before finishing the first hut.

I will post this drawing at a later date once more of it has been completed.

Horse Sketches XIV - A Work in Progress

I finally had my surgery yesterday and hopefully I will soon be back home.

I started with a horse head first, as they are what I am most familiar with and can achieve a reasonable likeness without reference material, but it wasn't long before lunch came.

After lunch I started on a second horse head but quickly became tired and set the sketch aside. I will do more work on it later.

Clear Lake VIII - A Work in Progress

Today is Christine's birthday and I am here and cannot take her out for our Mother and Daughter supper at the restaurant of her choice. But I will do that once I am out of here and upwardly mobile.

I couldn't get into drawing but I needed to do something while I waited, so I looked through some of the sketches I had in one of the sketch books and settled on this one that I had started a number of years ago (see post on 09 June 2013).

I started with some of the pine and cedar trees but, decided to stop before I ruined the sketch.

I will post this drawing at a later date once more work on the trees is completed.

Thank goodness the surgeon got me in for surgery today; it means that I will get to leave the hospital soon and go back home.

Still Waters I

It was a long night in the hospital, but this morning I met the surgeon who would operate and set the bone. Fortunately for me it is a clean break.

Depending on scheduling and how many emergencies happen I will either have my surgery this afternoon or sometime tomorrow.

Fortunately for me, last night when Ron and Christine came to visit they brought me some pencils, fineliners and a couple of sketch books to help me past the time while I am here.

I did this little 3" x 3-1/2” pen and ink drawing which when and shrink wrapped will be available for $25.00.

Accidents Do Happen.....

Today I spent most of the day in the hospital with a broken femur.

Evening Lighthouse 1 - A Work in Progress

I wanted to do a little work on a panting and I chose this one that I started last year (see posts on 18 April and 24 May 2016).

Using a mixture of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna I put in the windows on the lighthouse, the edge of the lantern room, the roof on the lighthouse keeper's home and the concrete foundation for the lighthouse.

With a mix of cadmium red and alizarin crimson I added the roof on the top of the lighthouse and the base around the lantern room.

With cadmium yellow I put in the lantern and a thin line of the reflected light from the sunset on the left side of the lighthouse.

I will post this painting at a later date once I paint in the water and the crashing surf at the base of the rocks.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork. I hope you will return often.

Caribbean - Two Works in Progress

I did a little bit on this drawing that I had started a couple of years ago  (see posts on 24 January 2014 and 27 May 2016).

After putting in the woman's hair, I found I couldn't get into the drawing so I set it aside.

Sail Softly on By I

Next I started on another drawing that was also started a couple of years ago (see post on 12 January 2014).

Along the Beach I

I put in a few boats up near the horizon line and then did a little more work on the seaweed on the shore.

I will post each of these drawings as more work on them is completed.

Winter Evening 1 - A Work in Progress

I pulled out this painting that I had started last month (see post on 11 January 2017) and turned it upside down and started laying in more French ultramarine blue into the top area and gradually lightening it toward the bottom.

Once it dried I decided to turn it into a landscape painting by drawing in some pine trees and I changed its name from Blue Lines 7 to Winter Evening 1.

I will post this painting again, once more work on it has been completed.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork.

Morning Fisherman 2 - A Work in Progress

Today I was just scribbling to see what I could inspire myself to draw and I ended up playing with a fisherman, in waders fishing by the shore of a lake.

I added in a tree on the shore on the left side of the drawing and a few water ripples, on the right side I put in some land with pine trees, I may add a cottage later.

In the background I lightly put in the horizon line and added some small tree tops in the distance.

I will post this again once I have put in the sky and the water.

Waterfall 2 - A Work in Progress

I was in the mood to do a small sketch and using a piece of watercolour paper in case I decide to add colour.

I started the sketch with a small oval shape and gradually filled it in beginning with some large rocks on at the bottom and on either side of the paper.

Up the right side, I added a tree trunk with the branches curving around toward the center of the paper.

Between the rocks at the front, I put in a large waterfall and above that a few rapids and above that a smaller waterfall.

On the left side I put in a few smaller trees with their branches curving toward the center.

I added a few more rocks and some smaller trees on either side of the water.

I will post this piece at a later date once I have started adding colour.

Rock Faces 1 and 2 - Two Works in Progress

Today I thought I would work on these two paintings that I had started last year (see post on 05 November 2016).

The first one is of an inlet on Long Lake near the boat launch.

I used a streaked in wash of Antwerp blue for the sky and then I set it aside to dry.

Next on the second painting which is of Loon Call Lake; I put in the sky with a mixture of Antwerp blue and French ultramarine blue.

I changed the name of this first painting to The Lookout 1 from Rock Face 2.

I changed the name of the second painting from Rock Face 1 to Granite Cliffs 1.

I will post each of these paintings at a later date as more work on them has been completed.

ACEO - Late Fall 1

I pulled out this small painting that I had started last year (see posts on 12 June and 11 October 2016) and decided to get it completed.

First I washed in the distant hills with a pale mixture of burnt sienna and raw sienna.

With a dark green mix of raw sienna and French ultramarine blue I painted in the pine trees.

With burnt sienna and French ultramarine blue I painted the deciduous tree trunks and branches along the edge of the field.

Lastly I added a post and rail fence to divide the fields.
