On the Lawn - Revisited

I pulled this drawing out as I felt there was no strong contrast in each of the elements, so I started by darkening some of the areas of the flag first.

Next I darkened the rock in behind barrel, on the barrel I darkened down some  of the barrel staves and hoops.














Lastly, I darkened the shadows on the wooden deer.

Waiting I

I saw the surgeon today and the good news is that I am allowed to put half weight on my leg, but the down side is I am still not allowed to go up or down stairs and I am not allowed to drive for at least the next 6 weeks.

When I returned home I thought I would work on this drawing of Eagle Beach in Aruba (see post on 12 November 2016).

I put in the boats first and then added the waves washing up on the beach and in the water.








Lastly, I put in the horizon line, the distant shoal and the clouds.

I can see in the future developing this drawing into a wonderful painting depicting the bold and beautiful colours of the Caribbean.

Evening on the Lake

Today it has been raining most of the morning and just after lunch we had a thunderstorm which knocked the power out. Since nothing that needs electricity to operate is working I thought I would work on this painting that I had started a couple of years ago (see posts on 29 August and 08 December 2015, 08 February and 03 May 2016).

I started working on the sails first using washes of Antwerp blue and French ultramarine blue until I was pleased with the shadows.

Using a darker mix of the blues I added the numbers onto the sail as well as the markings.

I added more Antwerp blue to the mixture and painted the base of the yacht. Darkening some areas as needed to give it shape.

To the blue mix I added burnt sienna and alizarin crimson and added the wind indicators to the top of the mast.

Lightening and darkening the mixture as needed I added the numbers on the hull, the shadows in the window and doorway of the cabin and painted the motor onto the stern.

Lastly, I painted in the people using various mixtures of burnt sienna, raw sienna, alizarin crimson and Antwerp blue.

Horse Sketches XIV

Today I saw that my North American Kestrels have returned to nest again in the birdhouse under the eaves. It is nice to see them and I will enjoy watching them as they raise their family.

I pulled out this sketch of some horse heads that I started while I was in hospital with my broken femur (see post on 14 February 2017).

I started on the first horse and added more details until I was reasonably happy with the way it looked.

Next, I worked on the second one and decided that to make it an Appaloosa.

I stopped when Christine came over and joined me for lunch before she headed down to do the barn chores for me and feed my cats.

Before she left, she returned to see that I had everything I wanted for the rest of the day.

I wanted to continue drawing and a movie came on television about a horse ranch and I did a few more sketches of horse heads.

Barn I

My little North American Kestrels have returned. It is nice to hear then calling to each other and occasionally seeing them fly.

This is another sketch that I did a few years ago (see post on 25 September 2013) and thought I would work it up into a finished drawing.

I added the tin on the barn roofs and put a few lightning rods onto some of the roofs. Next I added the rest of the front facing of the far right barn.

I fixed up some of the doors and windows, as well as putting more detail on the barn boards.

I decided to leave out the branch and leaves, coming in from the right side.

I know that if I want to turn this drawing into an interesting painting I will have to extend the left barn and perhaps include a few dairy cows into the barnyard.

Buildings I

Yes it is snowing! Overnight we received 2" (5.1cm) of heavy packing snow with the temperature in the morning being 30F (-1C) and the wind chill making it feel like 28F (-2C).

For the rest of the day we are going to have mixed precipitation of rain and snow. We will see how much of this white stuff will remain on the ground.

I thought I would work on this drawing today, that I had started a number of years ago (see post on 14 August 2013).

First I worked on the buildings, adding shingles, tiles or metal onto the roofs; as well as a couple of chimneys onto the main building.










Next put on the boards and siding on the various buildings, followed by the windows and doors.

Then it was time to start putting in the background trees and bushes behind the buildings and adding a little smoke coming out from one of the chimneys on the main building.

I put in the horizon line on the lake; and then on the shoreline I added in some grasses and growies on the bank and water ripples below and into the lake.

Barn IX

I wanted finish a drawing today, so I pulled out this piece that I had worked on last year (see posts on 28 September 2013 and 15 May 2016).

First I put on the roof line and tin on the barn and then I put on the barn board.














Next I put in the horizon line and added some trees and a fence line in the distance.

Lastly, I added the round hay bales inside the barn and some long grasses around the entrance.
