Pink Sky 2-4 Three Works in Progress

Today I thought I would like to work on these three paintings that I had started last year (see post on 16 October 2016) and thought like to try and get them completed today.

Working back and forth on each painting I drew in the horizon line, placed an island into the lake and drew pine trees onto the island.

I mixed a green of French ultramarine blue, Antwerp blue and burnt sienna and painted in the trees on the far shore of the lake on each painting.

The rocks were made of washes of alizarin crimson and burnt sienna.

After the first and second layers dried I added a little ultramarine blue together with both rock colours put in the shadows on the rocks and the waterline at their base.

Next I mixed a dark green of both blues and raw sienna and indicated the main tree trunk and branches and started to put on the pine needles.

Before I could go any further on these paintings Christine came over and wanted to take us out for supper.

I will post each of these paintings at a later date once the trees have been completed.

Birch Tree Trunks I - A Work in Progress

Christine came up today after work to do the barn chores and fill all of my bird feeders. She knows how much I enjoy watching all the different species of birds that come to visit me.

Lately, there have been lots of little birds and today was no exception, I had Tree Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows, Fox Sparrows and Song Sparrows and White Crowned Sparrows in addition to the many Chickadees, Dark-Eyed Juncos, Goldfinch, Red Polls and Purple Finches.

While sitting at small table near the window I thought I may as well do something productive and I started to work on this drawing that I had started a while ago (see posts on 11 June 2015 and 01 January 2017).

I had pulled out a couple of photographs of the birch trees by Cabin 5 at the Knoepfli Inn in Magnetawan and started adding some of the birch trees from there onto on each side of the three trees in the drawing.

I finished the birch trees to the left side of the original trees and am pleased with the results.

I will post this drawing at a later date once all the birch trees have been completed.

ACEO - Peach Sky 6

I started this piece last year (see post on 07 December 2016) while I was playing with opaque watercolour paint.

First I lightly indicated the main tree trunks and then I mixed various greens from Antwerp Blue, French ultramarine blue, raw sienna, new gamboge and aureolin.

Working from the left side of the painting across to the right side I put in the tree trunks, branches and needles until all the trees were completed.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork. I hope you will return often.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour paintings using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

Sunset Island I and II - Two Works in Progress

I had my pair of Rose breasted Grosbeaks arrive at my bird feeders today. This pair has returned to nest in one of the elm trees by the barn for a number of years.

I pulled out these two sketches that started earlier this month (see post on 02 May 2017) in preparation for a class I should be teaching at the end of the month.

First I drew in the horizon line then added more details to the islands in the background.

Next I worked on adding more details to the main pine tree branches and needles and the small pine.

Sunset Island I

Lastly I did a little more work on the rock shapes and to the reflections.

I started this drawing the same way as the last one, by putting in the horizon and the distant islands.

With the main pine tree being windblown with many broken and bent branches it took a little while until I was pleased with its shape.

Next I added the small pines, the dead trees, put in the growies at the base of the tree and then added reflections.

Sunset Island II

Now I will get copies of both of these drawings in preparation for the class at the end of the month.

Summer Sky - A Work in Progress

Today the morning started with the temperature at 34F (1C) with the wind chill making it feel like 25F (-4C). I wanted to do work on a painting and I came across a panel that had been primed and set aside to paint.

I started by putting in the sky using titanium white, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and cobalt blue, keeping the sky darker at the top and lightening it and adding clouds as I went toward the bottom of the canvas.

Using a mixture of ultramarine blue and burnt sienna I started to put in the main trunks of a couple of trees.

Before I could go much further I had company arrive bringing with them a mixture of rain and snow. I decided to put this painting away and enjoy a cup of tea and baked goods with my friends.

I will post it at a later date once some of the trees have been painted.

Moonlight Reflections 1 - A Work in Progress

Today while I was going through my binder of small paintings to complete I came across this one that I did a drawing of a few years ago (see post on 13 June 2014).

I did a little more work on the drawing and started to paint in the background starting by putting in the moon with cadmium yellow and aureolin and then added a diluted mix of the two colours onto the sails of the boat.

With a mixture of Antwerp blue and French ultramarine blue I brushed in the night sky, leaving a halo around the moon of lighter colour.

I added raw sienna to the sky colour and put in the trees on the far shore.

As the paint was drying, I lifted some of the colour with small amounts of water to make different layers of trees and create some interest.

Once the paint was partially dry, I added in some of the moon colour onto the trees as though they were being touched by the moonlight.

I will post this painting at a later date as work is completed in the far shore and the water is painted into the lake.

Art on Kent to Close

I just received a notice that Art on Kent in Lindsay, Ontario will close its doors when the "What's your Canada Show?" ends on 08 July 2017.

As I have found with most cooperatives, there are members who feel that they are entitled to reap the benefits of having a Gallery in which to exhibit their art and to attend classes and workshops; these same "members" are unwilling to do their fair share of the work, which is required as a member of the cooperative.

This year it became mandatory for all members to be on a committee and do their fair share to keep the Gallery. In this case, over two thirds of the members chose not to renew their membership because they were unwilling to do their fair share of the work.

The end result is the Gallery will close on 08 July 2017.
