Background 21 - A Work in Progress

Spring cannot be too far off with the temperature this morning being 20F (-6.7C) and even with the wind chill making it feel like 8F (-13.3C) and the snow blowing it is warmer and you don't mind when the sun comes out from behind the clouds.

This background is the result of using the leftover paint from a painting I started in Lucy Manley's class at KAGS earlier this month (see post on 02 March 2015).

The colours used to create this background are Titanium white, French ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, cadmium red, cadmium yellow, raw sienna, burnt sienna and alizarin crimson.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Koi 4 - A Work in Progress

Today is a much milder day with the temperature at 14F (-10C), and the wind chill making it feel like 3F (-16C). It is overcast and we are supposed to get some snow flurries this afternoon, hopefully there won't be too much blowing snow.

I had planned on getting this painting that I had started last year (see posts on 18 July 2014 and 09 January 2015) completed while I was at Art on Kent this afternoon, but we had a number of people come through the Gallery that I didn't have very much time to paint.

I will post this painting at a later date once more work has been completed on the Koi.

Clay Pots - A Work in Progress

12F (-11C) and the wind chill is -1F (-18.3C) the sun is shining all day and things are starting to melt a little and some of the snow has fallen off the barn roof.

Today at KAGS the Still Life class was clay pots.

I did a sketch of the grouping of pots and will refine the drawing before I start applying paint at which time I will post this piece again.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork.

OSWOA - Evening Sky 4

Now that the snow storm is over there is just the digging out to do and we have the joy of dropping temperatures arriving once more, but at least it won't be as cold as last month.

I came across this painting that I had started last year (see posts on 31 December 2014 and 18 January 2015) and it didn't need a lot of work to have it completed.

I lightened the one cloud in the sky that was too dark; and added a few reflections of the distant shoreline and the island into the water.

The OSWOA shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $40.00 and sold unframed.

If you would like more information about OSWOA please go to my post on 12 March 2010.

ACEO - Fog 2

Nothing like having to go to Toronto and knowing that you are going to have to drive in a snow storm that will change to freezing rain just to make things a little more difficult. But at least we made it back home safely.

After making myself a cup of tea I decided I would work on a small painting and pulled out this piece that I had started a number of years ago (see post on 27 February 2013).

I mixed a grey of burnt sienna and French ultramarine blue and working backwards, I put in the foreground tree first.

Next, I lightened the colour slightly by adding water and put in the next closer trees as well as the growies in the foreground on the right side of the painting.

I continued to add a little more water to the paint for each layer of trees until they faded in the distance.

Lastly, with raw sienna I painted in some grasses at the base of some of the trees.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

Old Barns in Winter - A Work in Progress

It is still not above the freezing mark at 24F (-4.4C) and with the wind chill making it feel like 6F (-14C), even though it will soon be spring it would be nice to have some of the snow melt, but that is not in the forecast. But I may as well enjoy the sunshine today because we are going to get more snow and freezing rain tomorrow.

In the afternoon I went to the second last Lucy Manley class for this session at KAGS where the subject was barns in winter. I chose to do a painting of my barns here on the farm.

The canvas was under painted with raw sienna and then blocked out with cadmium red.

Using a mixture of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna the dark barn board was painted in on the shadowed side of the barns.

A small amount of Titanium white and a touch of alizarin crimson were added to the barn board mix and the sunlit sides of the barn were added.

The clouds were painted in first with Titanium white and the bottom of the sky was painted in next using the white and cerulean blue. At this time a little of the snow in the far fields was indicated with white.

Then using a mixture of Titanium white, French ultramarine blue and a little cerulean blue the top of the sky above the clouds was painted.

A little burnt sienna was added to the sky colours and the grey shadows were added to the clouds. Blending various areas of the clouds with the white, both blue mixes and the grey, the cloud shapes were built.

More of the white was used to indicate the snow in the paddock and foreground fields. Some of the sky colours were used to paint the shadows in the snow.

Various mixtures of the barn board colours were applied with vertical strokes to indicate the barn board on the barn.

Using a very dark mix of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna the shadows under the roof lines were indicated.

With a pale grey of Titanium white and a small amount of the shadow colour the far barn roof was painted. Then pure burnt sienna was used to indicate the rust on the roof.

Adding more of the dark shadow colour to the grey of the far barn roof the closer barn roof was brushed in with a small amount of burnt sienna used to put a little rust on this roof.

I will post this painting at a later date one I have completed the stone work on the barns and some of the fence.

Thank you for looking at my artwork.
