Background 90-92

Yesterday, after painting with the Buckhorn Tuesday Painting Group, I used the leftover acrylic paint on extra canvases that I always bring with me to use as background or under paint.

Background 90

For the first canvas I applied more of the manganese blue with the lighter greens made with the cadmium yellow.

Background 91

For the next one I used various combinations of the greens and yellows.

Background 91

On the last canvas I applied the remaining paint.

As usual since I hate to waste paint I used the leftover paint from yesterday's painting to put on canvas as a background.

Background 87

For the first canvas I used the remaining titanium white, raw sienna and burnt sienna.

Background 88

For the second one I used the remaining manganese blue, raw sienna and the darker greens.

Background 89

On the last canvas I applied all the remaining greens, blues, yellows and the last bits of the white.

Background 85 - A Work in Progress

This is the canvas I used yesterday for my leftover acrylic paint from the painting on ehich I had been working.

With the pastel colours I think it may be turned into a morning scene and I will post this background at a later date once I decide what image I put onto the canvas.

This is a background I made using the remaining paint left on my palette from yesterday's art class.

Backgrounds 81-83 - Three Works in Progress

Today is unbelievably warm with the temperature making it to 52F (11.1C) and a lot of the snow melting. Tomorrow is supposed to be a lot warmer; perhaps I will be able to work in my garden.

These are three backgrounds created by using the remaining acrylic paint from yesterday's workshop with Lucy Manley.

Background 83

The first one was a mix of cadmium red, cadmium yellow, titanium white and a little raw sienna.

Background 83

This second painting was a combination of titanium white, cadmium red, Cerulean blue and ultramarine blue.

Background 83

The last piece is various mixtures of alizarin crimson, titanium white, ultramarine blue and Cerulean blue.

I will post each of these pieces at a later date once more work on them has been completed.

Field Poppies I - A Work in Progress

Although today is warmer at 8F (-13.3C) the wind chill is making it feel a lot colder at -14F (25.6C) and we are supposed to get both snow and freezing rain later in the day.

I thought I would work on another sketch of poppies today this time a field of them standing tall against a bright morning sky.

For this painting I will use a canvas that was called Background 59 (see post on 18 December 2015) which should work quite well.

I will post this painting at a later date once I have transferred the sketch onto the canvas and started painting in the background grasses and leaves.

Poppies and Fence Post I - A Work in Progress

Happy Valentine's Day! At least today is warmer at -11F (-23.9C) and not very much wind when compared to yesterday.

Since it is not going to be a nice day I thought I would work on sketches of poppies, which are bright and bold flowers and seeing them in bloom in the early part of the summer always cheers me up.

And since I need some new paintings for the upcoming Floral and Still Life show in April what could be more appropriate.

I pulled out some of the yellow based acrylic backgrounds that were made using the remaining paint and decided that Background 73 (see post on 26 January 2016) would work well with this drawing.

I will post this painting at a later date once I have transferred the sketch and started painting the fence post.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork.

Background 76 and 77 - Two Works in Progress

Today I had to go to Toronto to take Christine to see a specialist and on the way back we will stop at a couple of the art supply stores so I can get a few things that I need.

The two pieces below were created by using yesterday's remaining paint.

Background 76

The first background was made using titanium white, Hansa yellow, raw sienna, burnt sienna and a touch of Cerulean blue.

Background 77

The second background was various blends of titanium white, ultra marine blue, Cerulean blue, alizarin crimson, cadmium red and burnt sienna.

I will post each of these paintings at a later date as more work on them is completed.

Background 73-75 - Three Works in Progress

A number of things happened today starting with it raining and the temperature rose to 41F (5C), but this isn't going to last for long as the wind came up during the afternoon and the temperature started to drop and we are to have snow overnight.

With my driveway covered in ice due to the thaw, walking on it tomorrow to do the barn chores is going to be treacherous.

The following backgrounds are the created from unused paint from yesterday's acrylic painting.

Background 73

This background was made using Hansa yellow, yellow ocher and a small amount of ultramarine blue.

Background 74

Ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, alizarin crimson and titanium white were used on this background painting.

Background 75

This piece was made using cadmium red, alizarin crimson, burnt sienna and titanium white.

I had plans to complete some of my acrylic paintings at St. Matthews church in Buckhorn with the Tuesday Painting Group, but once Heather and I arrived there we found that there was a leak in their gas heating and they had the doors open so we wouldn't succumb to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Needless to say we didn't stay very long and by the time I dropped Heather off at her house and returned home I was no longer motivated to paint.

But tomorrow is another day.

This is the background made with yesterday's remaining paint.

Background 68 - A Work in Progress

Last night we had freezing rain, which during the morning changed to rain with the temperatures climbing to 47F (8.3C). My driveway was a sheet of ice with water running down road.

There wasn't very much left over paint from working on yesterday's painting but it did cover one small canvas.

The colours used were alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and titanium white.

I will post this canvas at a later date once more work on it has been completed.

Background 62 and 63 - Two Works in Progress

I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, even though here there is no snow on the ground, the temperature has dropped to 47F (8.3C) and it is supposed to get more into seasonal cold weather over the next couple of days.

Background 62

Once again the remaining paint was used for backgrounds; for the first one the colours were titanium white, Hansa yellow, alizarin crimson, cadmium red and burnt sienna.

Background 63

For the second one I used black, titanium white, ultramarine blue and a small amount of burnt sienna.

Once I decide what to paint on them I will post them again.

Backgrounds 60-61 - Two Works in Progress

These are two canvases I used for the left over paint from yesterday to put in a background.

Background 60

For the first one I used some of the titanium white, cadmium red and most of the alizarin crimson.

Background 61

With the second canvas I used the remaining titanium white and alizarin crimson as well as all the black.

I will post each of these canvases at a later date once I start another painting.

Hoturo - A Work in Progress

It was time to put in the water and add the rocks and trees of the closer shoreline on this painting I had started earlier this month (see posts on 10, 12 and 17 December 2015).

I started with the rocks as a base for the shoreline and put in the rocks using various mixes of ultramarine blue, titanium white, alizarin crimson and cadmium red.

Next I lightly sketched in the main tree tops and put in the base of the trees with vertical strokes using burnt sienna, ultramarine blue and raw sienna.

With light and dark mixes of ultramarine blue, raw sienna, Hansa yellow and burnt sienna the tree tops were put in keeping the sunlight on the right side.

I started the waves from the distant shore and worked forward, keeping the furthest away the lightest colour and gradually darkening the waves as they got closer to the front.

More details were added to the closer waves and a little of the under paint was allowed to show through to give warmth to the water.

Once the painting was dry the image of the boat was moved around on the canvas until I was happy with the position and then it was transferred onto the painting.

I will post this painting at a later date once work has started on the sailboat.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork.

Backgrounds 56 - A Work in Progress

As usual I used the left over paint from yesterday and put it onto a canvas as the background on a canvas.

The colours I used are cadmium red, burnt sienna, titanium white and a small amount of ultramarine blue.

I will post this painting at a later date once I decide what to I wish to paint.
