Well, Hello There

Today I am at KAGS for the still life class which features toys and stuffed animals.

I decided to do the lamb with its front legs hanging down below the riser at the back of the display, making it seem as though it wanted to meet the knitted toy elephant.

I put a few wooden blocks into the drawing near the elephant.

I may go back into the drawing and put the corner on the cloth covered riser.

It's a Dog's World 1 and 2 - Two Works in Progress

Today I am at KAGS all day; first for the Still Life class in the morning and then sitting the Gallery in the afternoon.

The theme for the class is Pet Supplies. We had a number of things for the display relating to dogs, stuffed animals, a rubber ball, dog biscuits, chew sticks, brushes, dog treats and a collar and leash.

For the first one I chose to use the stuffed toy Dachshund and the St. Bernard holding a heart, together with a collar and leash, a few dog treats and a rubber ball.

For the second one I made it a little simpler and to used the stuffed toy dachshund, the food dish, the jar with dog treats spilling out and a box of dog biscuits.

First Day of the Shades of Summer Art Show and Sale

It is going to be another hot 88F (31C) and very humid 102F (39C) day.

Today I opened the show in the morning and for the most part sat at my table at the back of the building near the door drawing.

I worked on this drawing of a stuffed toy bunny wearing a jacket in between talking with the people who came in to view the show.

Three original paintings were sold by Ron Desjardine and Sue Sydney, pottery was sold by JoAnne Connell Northey and small items were purchased from Diane Collins.

I would like to thank new collector Ms. Jade Viane of London, Ontario on her purchase of Boat 1 (see post on 07 April 2011) and Pastel Colours 2 (see post on 19 January 2017).

ACEO - Happy Hippo 1

Today I wanted to finish is little piece that I had started a couple of years ago (see post on 17 November 2013).

I tidied up the arm and leg on the right side and added a little more hair on his head.

First I put down a wash of burnt sienna as the base colour of the wooden floor.

Then I added a little French ultramarine blue to darken the colour and using a dry brush I added in the wood grain using horizontal strokes.

For the background behind the hippo I used a mix of raw sienna and new gamboge.

Once the background was dry it was time to paint the hippo.  I started with alizarin crimson for the inside of the ears and then added a small amount of new gamboge to paint the muzzle. I then put in the mouth with alizarin crimson.

For the main parts of the body and the head, I used alizarin crimson, French ultramarine blue and a small amount of burnt sienna.

To the body colour I added a little more burnt sienna to darken the colour and painted in the hooves.

Using the hoof colour I made it almost black by adding more of the blue and burnt sienna and painted the hair, eyes, and nostrils.

With pure Antwerp blue I painted in the scarf.

Lastly, using cadmium yellow I put in the highlight on the hair and on the edges if the eyes.

More Hallowe'en Stuff - Two Works in Progress

These are two more drawings from the Hallowe'en eve still life class at KAGS.














Witch's Kitty

The first is of a small black cat with beautiful green glowing eyes wearing an orange bow tie and matching witch's hat.














Jack in the Hat

The second is of a smiling Jack o' lantern wearing a black witch's hat.

I will post each of these pieces as more work on them is completed.

OSWOA - Wanna Play?

Today we set up a show at the Purple Onion Festival held in Millennium Park in Peterborough.












We were fortunate in that we had gotten all of our paintings inside the building before it started to rain. I felt sorry for some of the exhibitors who had to go through high winds and a torrential downpour during the morning hours that caused a couple of tents to collapse due to the amount of rain that fell during a very short time and the high winds. By noon the sun came out and the temperatures climbed to 66F (19C) and the crowds came out to enjoy the Festival.














I would like to thank new collector Gary Smith of Peterborough, Ontario on his purchase of Autumn Birch 1 (see post on 14 July 2012).











This is one of the pieces that I took to the show that I had started in a Still Life class earlier this year (see posts on 27 March 2014, 31 July 2014 and 07 August 2014) and decided that I wanted to finish it as a companion piece for the one I completed a couple of weeks ago (see post on 07 August 2014).

OSWOA - What's New?

This morning I was at Art on Kent which is normally not open on Sunday, but they had the Doors Open Ontario Tour which was sponsored by the Ontario Heritage Trust where tours were conducted through many of the century or older buildings throughout the province.

Since I had a little time at the Gallery and wanted to finish this little piece that was started a while ago (see posts on 27 March 2014 and 07 July 2014) and would be ideal for a child's room.

Wanna Play - A Work in Progress

Today I had to be at the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio to help with the take in for the Figuratively Speaking Show.













I decided since I had to be there I may as well arrive early and work on a couple of paintings including this one that I had started in a Still Life class earlier this year (see posts on 27 March 2014 and 31 July 2014).

I will post this painting at a later date after more wok has been completed on the plush duck and the shadows have been added.

What's New? - A Work in Progress

We were very fortunate that the rain held off yesterday until 8pm and it continued to rain throughout the night including having a major thunderstorm at 2am which lasted for almost two hours. The rain finally ended around 6am and as I headed for the show at Lockside Trading Company it was cloudy and looked as though it would start to rain at any moment.

It didn't take as long to set everything up again as I knew exactly what was being hung up on the grids which made things a lot easier.

With the overcast skies not too many people came out for the morning but as the day progressed the clouds disappeared and the sun came out bringing with it the crowds.













I did a little more work on this painting that I had started in one of the Still life classes at KAGS (see post on 27 March 2014).

I started by working on the curtains to give a little definition to the folds.

Next I darkened the shadows beneath the duck and then worked on getting the duck to look a little more round in shape.

I will post this painting again once the toy duck is completed.

Mine! 1

Today we had a temperature of 72F (22C) with the humidity making it feel like 84F (29C) but we will have rain for most of the day which means I do not have to water my garden.

I wanted to work on a still life drawing today, so I set up one of my stuffed toys in this case a dragon and added a few blocks to make it interesting.















It didn't take very long to get the drawing of the dragon finished.

From there I started adding in the various blocks to complete the drawing. The last thing I did was to curve the dragon's tail around the blocks making him look possessive.

Toy Ducks - Two Works in Progress

Today's theme in the still life class at KAGS was toys. It was a good thing so many toys were brought in for the class as we had thirteen people in the group and were able to have four different displays set up to accommodate all of them.

I chose to do a couple of pieces using the some of the different ducks and fish toys.

For the first one I drew one of the ducks and one of the fish. I painted in the background curtain with various shades of French ultramarine blue, Antwerp blue and cobalt blue. Then set it aside to dry while I sketched in the second drawing of a rubber duck and the same plush duck in reverse.













What's New?

I painted in the background using French ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and raw sienna. This was set aside to dry and I went back to the first painting and using raw sienna painted in the floor and with a touch of burnt sienna indicated the shadows under the toys.

I then went back into the second painting and using French ultramarine blue and Antwerp blue painted in the floor and indicated the shadows beneath both toys. By then it was time to take a break so I set them aside to dry.

After break was over I started back on the first painting and placed a more defined shadow beneath both the fish and the duck.













Wanna Play?

Then working back and forth between the two toys the eyes were put in and all the dark lines. A wash of aureoline was put over the entire duck as a base yellow and different areas were painted with raw sienna, new gamboge and cadmium yellow.

The fish was painted with alizarin crimson and cadmium red and in the lighter areas mixtures of new gamboge and cadmium yellow.

I will post these paintings at a later date once more on them has been completed.

Happy Hippo 1

Today was warm and overcast day which made it a good day to work outside.

We started in the morning after breakfast by planting acorns along the fence line on the north side of the farm. I am hopeful that they will grow even though they will take a long time to become mature.

After lunch we spent most of the afternoon parging the foundation in the centre barn while it was still warm enough for the cement to cure. We won't get many more days like today before the cold weather and snow arrive.

When it started getting dark, I left Ron to finish the last of the parging and do the evening chores in the barn while I went to the house to get started on cooking supper.

While I was waiting for the meal to cook I did this drawing of a knitted hippopotamus stuffed toy which I thought was cute.

Stuffed Animals - A Work in Progress

The Still Life class at KAGS has started back again for the autumn season.

For the first one we decided on a playful collection of stuffed animals and dolls which were set on and around the chaise lounge at the Gallery.

I will post this painting at a later date once more work has been completed.

Ted D. Bear

Every so often I will set up one of my daughter's old stuffed animals and do a small painting of it.

In this case I did one of her many teddy bears. I wanted to keep it fairly simple without a lot of clutter.

This framed 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" original watercolour is available for $95.00.

Monkey Shines - A Work in Progress

This morning I watched a thunderstorm over Peterborough from the mow of my barn. They got a good downpour of rain while all we received was a light sprinkling, barely enough to dampen the driveway, never mind the flowers or grass. We are supposed to have temperatures of 86F (30C) which is setting records for the month.













Today I painted with the Creative Arts Guild in Lakefield. Most of the morning was taken up with helping other members pick mats for their artwork. But I was able to work on this painting for a little while and finished one of the tubes of paint as well as the brushes on the watercolour block. I will post it at a later date once I have more of it completed.

Monkey Shines - A Work in Progress

Today I was painting with the Creative Arts Guild in Lakefield (see postings on 27 March 2012 and 08 May 2012).

I finished the few brushes in the jar I had missed painting last week when I was with the Buckhorn Group and started on the brushes that were lying on the block of watercolour paper.

Much of the time today at class was for discussion about the upcoming "Artists in Bloom Show" which will be held at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in Lakefield, Ontario on 02 June 2012.

I will post this painting at a later date once more work on it has been completed.

Monkey Shines - A Work in Progress

Today I was painting with the Buckhorn Tuesday Painting Group at St Matthew's Church. I decided that I would like to work on this one again (see post on 27 March 2012).

I drew the some of the many types of brushes that I have in my brush holder. Then I started painting them; making sure to take note of where the highlights and reflected images were on the brush ferrules and then began to paint them.
