Art Exhibit at the Douro-Dummer Library Art Gallery

Today, three of the members of the Buckhorn Artists' Group are setting up an art exhibit at the Douro-Dummer Library Art Gallery, located at 435 Douro Fourth Line, Douro- Dummer, Ontario.

This is the first art exhibit the Library Art Gallery will be having since the Covid-19 lockdowns.







Once we arrived at the library we unpacked all the paintings and set them up around the gallery area on the floor putting similar subjects together.














Since we had a large number of florals and still life paintings, we decided to start with the first wall and hang them there and then decide how we would hang the remaining pieces.








We decided to start the middle wall with JoAnne's large underwater painting for the centre of the display and worked out toward the ends on each side. Trying to chose paintings which had water, cottages or were landscapes.












To the right side we tried to use paintings with warmer colours closest to her painting and gradually going to neutral colours toward the end.
















On the left side we chose paintings that had water and colours in blue and green tones.











Now we had the last wall to complete and we found that most of the remaining paintings were either oils or acrylics, with a couple of watercolour paintings and graphite drawings.








We started the far end of the wall and hung the smaller watercolour painting on the end and put the two graphite drawings together beside it followed by the larger watercolour painting.
















Lastly, we hung the remaining oil and acrylic paintings to complete our display.

We will return next month to change some of our paintings so there will be new pieces for the public to view. If you have a chance please come out and visit out exhibit.

Mountains

Today, I was painting with the Buckhorn Artists' Group and one of our members Debra Wasson was giving a demonstration of painting forsythias.

I tried sketching out a drawing of them to paint, but I just couldn't get into it, so I went through some of the partially completed paintings I had also brought along with me and decided that I would work on this one that I had started many years ago (see post on 22 January 2011).

I wanted to soften the clouds because they were too hard edged to be believable.

Using a bristle brush and water I gently softened the edges of the clouds starting with the furthest back ones above the mountains and gradually worked down the layers of cloud to the top of the mountains.











After looking at it I decided I also needed to do the same to the cloud bank below the mountain peak.

I set this piece aside to dry while the Group stopped to have lunch and discuss having our 30th Annual Shades of Summer Art Show and Sale in August now that things were opening up and my regular shows were once again happening.

When I returned to this painting, the paper was dry so I made of dark of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna with a small amount of alizarin crimson.

I darkened the top edges of the mountains and added a few shadow details.

This painting, once it is framed will be available for $165.00.

Front Field II - Lone Pony

Today I am painting with the Buckhorn Artists' Group and I decided to work in pen and ink.

I pulled out this drawing that I had started a number of years ago (see posts on 18 June and 19 July 2017, 13 January and 10 May 2020) and decided that it was about time it was completed.











At lunchtime the Group decided that we would be able to hold our 30th Annual "Shades of Summer" Art Show and Sale again on 12-14 August (provided it doesn't get cancelled due to a rise in Covid-19 cases).

This drawing once it has been matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $45.00.

Hung Out to Dry 1-4 - Four Works in Progress

Today I am painting with the Buckhorn Artists' Group at St Matthew's Church.

Once we arrived we were greeted with the news that the boiler had quit during the night and that there was no heat in the building.

Fortunately, the temperature didn't drop below freezing overnight and there was still some heat remaining in the building but, there was also no water available so we couldn't use the washrooms.

We had brought new paintings to hang on the wall to replace the ones that were there since the Covid 19 shut downs had started.

After the paintings were hung most of us decided to tough it out and stay to paint or draw for the day.

In the meantime we talked about what we had stored in our two cupboards at the church so I pulled everything out and we sorted through all the reference paintings we had from various artists who had instructed us over the years.

We sorted the paintings, drawings and kept the works from each artist together and returned them to the first cupboard.

Next we sorted through all the reference material, booklets and tear sheets from magazines and decided to put some of them in a file in the cupboard.

The old guest books dated back to our first show called "Among Friends" held on the Victoria Day weekend in May 1989. One of our members wanted to keep them and create an archive for our group.

After everything was put into the second cupboard, I pulled out these pieces that I had started a number of years ago (see post on 30 November 2017) and decided to get at least the background painted into them.

I wet the background area with water and brushed in French ultramarine blue to give the impression of sky behind the laundry.

I will post each of these pieces at a later date as more work on them is completed.

White Cedars 1 - A Work in Progress

After having our class last month cancelled due to weather we are painting today at the church this week and will return to our usual second and fourth Tuesday of the month next week.

Today I wanted to work on slightly larger paintings than I did last month and I chose this painting that I had started a long time ago (see posts on 15 December 2011, 15 August 2017 and 23 January 2018).

With a mix of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna, I painted the trunks of the five large cedar trees in the foreground.














I mixed a green of Antwerp blue and raw sienna and painted the trees on the background hills.

Next, I darkened down the green mixture and painted in the middle ground cedar tree on the left side of the stand of  white cedars.

I will post this painting at a later date as more work on it has been completed.

Sunken Logs 1 - A Work in Progress

This is the first time the Buckhorn Artists' Group has gotten together since March of 2020 and although only five of us were able to meet today it was enjoyable to be painting as a Group.

I wanted to do a little more work on this painting that I had started a number of years ago (see posts on 08 August 2012 and 20 July 2013) as it is fairly small and I can stop working on it at anytime.

I decided that my light source would come from the upper left corner.

After making various browns and greys by using combinations of French ultramarine blue, Cobalt blue, burnt sienna and raw sienna, it was time to start painting the bark and woodgrain on the logs.














Starting with the closest log, which was in the shadows, I used the darker mixtures and was careful to leave a few bits of white paper as highlights touched by the sun.

Next, I put in the one behind it to the right and having it slightly lighter in colour.

From there I added some of the darker textures on all of the remaining logs first and I gradually worked toward the lighter colours.

I still have a lot more to do on the logs and I have to decide what kind of fish or if I am going to have more than one and where to place them.

I will post this painting at a later date once the logs are completed.

Big Cedar Lake Birch VII - A Work in Progress

Today, we are still under a Weather Advisory and this time it is for heavy snow and ice pellets, with the temperature at F(-7C) and the wind chill making it feel like F (-14C). Needless to say the horses are going to spend another day in their stalls with plenty of hay and water.

After doing the barn chores and having breakfast I thought I would go through some of my pen and ink drawings and do some work on one of them.

I chose this one of a birch tree that I had started a number of years ago when we were canoeing on Big Cedar Lake (see posts on 11 August and 11 October 2019).

I knew it needed a number of things changed so I worked in pencil adding shading to the tree trunk, adjusting the branches and putting some more leaves.

I will post this drawing at a later date as more work on it is completed.
