Hung Out to Dry 1-4 - Four Works in Progress

Today I am painting with the Buckhorn Artists' Group at St Matthew's Church.

Once we arrived we were greeted with the news that the boiler had quit during the night and that there was no heat in the building.

Fortunately, the temperature didn't drop below freezing overnight and there was still some heat remaining in the building but, there was also no water available so we couldn't use the washrooms.

We had brought new paintings to hang on the wall to replace the ones that were there since the Covid 19 shut downs had started.

After the paintings were hung most of us decided to tough it out and stay to paint or draw for the day.

In the meantime we talked about what we had stored in our two cupboards at the church so I pulled everything out and we sorted through all the reference paintings we had from various artists who had instructed us over the years.

We sorted the paintings, drawings and kept the works from each artist together and returned them to the first cupboard.

Next we sorted through all the reference material, booklets and tear sheets from magazines and decided to put some of them in a file in the cupboard.

The old guest books dated back to our first show called "Among Friends" held on the Victoria Day weekend in May 1989. One of our members wanted to keep them and create an archive for our group.

After everything was put into the second cupboard, I pulled out these pieces that I had started a number of years ago (see post on 30 November 2017) and decided to get at least the background painted into them.

I wet the background area with water and brushed in French ultramarine blue to give the impression of sky behind the laundry.

I will post each of these pieces at a later date as more work on them is completed.

Hung Up to Dry - A Work in Progress

This is a larger version of one of the sketches I did last month in the Still Life class at KAGS.

It was of a teddy bear on a clothes line with its arm tangled in the shoulder strap of a corset.

I thought it would make an interesting painting and will probably get a chuckle out of many people who see it, as it certainly caused a lot of laughter in the class.

I will post this piece at a later date once I have completed the outline drawing.

Hung Out to Dry 1-4

Today I spent the day at the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio.

In the morning I took the Still life class where the theme was Wash Day - Things Hung Out to Dry.

A clothesline was strung from the support beams in the ceiling and it didn't take long for a couple of  brightly coloured summer dresses, a white dress shirt, a pair of denim jeans, a housecoat, flannel pajama pants, a bright red satin corset and a teddy bear were hung along with a clothes pin bag.

I started with a drawing of the teddy bear with his paw through one of the straps on the corset.

The next sketch was of the white dress shirt.

What attracted me to that one was the many folds in the material and the different areas of shadows and cast shadows throughout the shirt in a wide variety of blue, blue greys and greys.

Since I have reference photographs and this sketch I may do a large painting of the shirt on the line at a later date.

Hung Out to Dry 2

Beside the shirt was a pair of black denim jeans which I started on next.

After completing the sketch of the jeans I thought it needed a little more around it, so I added a part of the white shirt on the left side and although there was a brightly coloured dress beside it I took artist's licence and changed it into a towel instead.

From there I started on another sketch of the clothes, but this time those on the far left side of the clothes line.

I placed the pajama bottoms in first with the one leg flipped up over the clothesline as though blown there by the wind and then added in the house coat beside it to the left.

I felt that the sketch needed a few more clothes so I put in part of one of the dresses on the left side and a wash cloth on the right side.

Teddy Bear Bedtime - A Work in Progress

It is another cold day 8F (-13.3C) but at least there is very little wind and the sun is shining causing more of the snow to melt.

Today Margaret Tough the President of KAGS and I are going to be on CFFF Trent Radio 92.7 FM in the afternoon after the Still Life class. We will be talking about the Gallery and the current Small Treasures Art Show. It should be interesting.

In the morning our theme for the Still Life class was "Sleepwear".

We had many interesting things to work chose from including various types of housecoats, satin robes, pajamas, night gowns, negligées, slippers, a couple of teddy bears and an alarm clock.














I decided on the two teddy bears, the alarm clock and the negligée on a blanket.

I put in the background with a pale mix of cobalt blue and alizarin crimson. While it was drying I added a section of hardwood floor.

I will post this painting at a later date once I have started painting the teddy bears.

Denim and Leather - A Work in Progress

This is the sketch I worked on for the Still Life class at KAGS on Thursday.

We had a nice assortment of clothing including, denim shirts and jeans, straw and felt Cowboy hats a pair of Cowboy boots and a bandana that were draped over a wooden chair.

There is a lot more work to do on it before I start painting and I will post it in the New Year once more work on it has been completed.

Clothing - A Work in Progress

Today at KAGS the theme for the Still Life class was clothing.

We had an assortment of clothes, a denim shirt hanging off the end of a wooden chair with a crocheted hat hanging off the opposite end of the same chair and a plaid work jacket lying on the floor.

In the background there was a camouflage jumpsuit, hanging beside the brightly coloured beach wrap and top. There was also a simple grey sleeveless dress beside a leather biker jacket.

The folds created interesting shadows across the materials.

I will post this painting at a later date once more of it has been completed.
