The Ones That Got Away

This is a painting I started a while ago (see postings on 08 July 2010, 31 October 2011 and 16 July 2012)and every so often I have been adding things to get it completed.

I added some shadows to the lures to give more of an illusion of roundness.

This original 10-1/2" x 11-1/4" watercolour painting when framed will be available for $345.00.

The Ones That Got Away - Painting the Stump

With being able to dive it is amazing what you can find in the lakes. Everything from cars, boats, snowmobiles and boat motors.

In one of the lakes in about 60 feet of water there is an ancient native village. Pottery shards from this site have been carbon tested which dates it approximately 30,000 years old. Obviously long before the lake was there.

But aside from a wealth of bottles that have been accidentally dropped or dumped overboard there are many anchors and a lot of lures caught among the rocks and attached to old cedar stumps.

Shown here are just a few of the ones I have lost over the years. Today I finally finished putting the wood grain on the sunken stump (see posts on 08 July 2010 and 31 October 2011).

I still have to wash in more of the water colour over the painting and lift out the rays of light as it travels through the water. I will post this painting at a later date once it is completed.

Taking the Bait

This is a painting I had started last year (see post on 27 Feb 2011) and decided to work on today

I chose to turn this fish into a brook trout rather than make it a muskie as I had originally planned. I wanted a little more colour on the fish to create interest.

I added some details to the underwater logs. Then using various greyed greens I painted in some weeds to complete the painting.

This original 3-3/4" x 9-1/4" watercolour painting when framed will be available for $145.00.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

The Ones That Got Away - A Work in Progress

Since both the Outdoor Painters' Group and the Buckhorn Artists' Group will be applying to Algonquin Park to exhibit in the Visitor's Centre for next year I decided that in case we are accepted that I should  work on some of the paintings I have started that would be suitable to exhibit there.

I am at the point on this painting where the time consuming part of putting in the cast shadows, applying the layers of wash over the branches and the details of the wood grain on the tree stump (see post on 08 July 2010) need to be completed.

I have darkened down the bottom edge of the trunk and on the upper branch to create the illusion of roundness as well as the curved shadow cast by the main trunk.

Some of the small wood grain details have been added but there is a lot more to do and I will post this painting at a later date once more is completed.

Thank you for looking at my artwork.

Taking the Bait - A Work in Progress

Today was the opening for the Miniaturia show at the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio and my two submissions were of juvenile Spotted Drumfish (see my postings on 21 and 23 February 2011).

I thought it was only fitting that I should paint a freshwater fish this time.

I have the under painting completed and will work on the detail next. I will post this painting once I have it finished.

The Ones That Got Away - A Work in Progress

How is it that it is always one of your favourite lures that snags on something submerged in the lake and it is lost? Although I hear many "fish" tales about how it was taken by a "big" fish that snapped the line.

This painting is about half way finished. The under painting has been completed and now the texture is gradually being put onto the stump. The lures need a little more light and shadows added to them.

I will post this painting at a later date after I have worked on it again.
