ACEO - Winter Trees 8

Today I wanted to finish this painting that I had started last month (see post on 03 January 2019).

The first thing I did was to blend the hard edge below the trees on the right side of the painting.

Next I added a little more colour into the snow, softly blending in a little alizarin crimson in some areas to warm the painting and a little cobalt blue into other sections.

From there I started working on the maple trees on the right side of the painting, using mixtures of French ultramarine blue, cobalt blue and burnt sienna.

With a pale mix of the bark colour I put in the trees on the distant hill.

For the pine tree I used both of the blues and raw sienna for the needles on the tree branches.

Lastly, I put in the grasses and growies in the foreground using various mixtures of burnt sienna, raw sienna, cadmium yellow and new gamboge.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

Vertical 1 - A Work in Progress

Today I slipped coming down the stairs and broke my big toe and landed on my knees, badly bruising both of them.

Needless to say I didn't move around too much after that happened so I spent some time working on this painting (see posts on 03 October and 05 December 2018).

After looking at this painting before I started, I decided that the large white areas needed to be made smaller, otherwise which ever colours I put in would overpower everything.

Using a pencil, I reduced the size of the large areas and changed the direction of some of the spaces.

Using a mixture of French ultramarine blue and alizarin crimson for a deep rich purple, I added in some strong dark lines going in various directions.

I added a couple of areas of new gamboge to bring in light.

Next I added cadmium red for some rich colour and then mixed it with the yellow for a bright orange.

Using a mix of the yellow and the blue I applied some more areas of green into the painting.

Looking at the few remaining white spaces I knew that I wanted to keep some of the white, but not in such large areas.

It was time to leave it alone and give some thought to it when I wasn't hurting.

I will post this painting again once it has been completed.

Murex Shell 1 - A Work in Progress

It is another cold day with the temperature at 9F (-13C) with the wind chill making it feel like -9F (-23C) and more snow falling to make things more difficult. The drive into KAGS wasn't as bad as expected, but then I left fairly early for the Still Life class.

The theme for the class was "At the Beach" and we had many seashells of various sizes and shapes, jewellery made of coral and shells, beach towels, sandals, sun glasses and many other things you would take with you to the beach.

Since many of the larger shells were mine, I chose to start on a small Murex shell that another member brought in for the display.

After the break I didn't have much time to work on my drawing as I was busy getting the themes for the remaining Still Life classes put together and ready for the printer.

I will post this piece at a later date once more work on it has been completed.

Wine and Beer - Two Works in Progress

These are the remaining two sketches that I started in the Still Life class at KAGS earlier this month (see post on 24 January 2019).

This one was of the display featuring the wine bottles and various wine glasses.

We had five different types of wine glasses, a couple of smaller cut crystal glasses, two long stemmed tulip glasses, one of which was tinted blue and a tall Champagne flute.

Ginger ale was put into a couple of the glasses to imitate sparkling wine.

Wine

There were two bottles of Vidal Icewine one from Jackson-Triggs and the other from Reif Estate Winery to complete the wine display.

The last grouping features beer.

The beer mug was filled part way with a cola to imitate beer, but of course it was not the right colour.

There was an O'Keefe's beer chalice and an Old Vienna stange glass.

Beer

There was a bottle of Budweiser and another of Barking Squirrel set in behind one of the glasses and at the base of the beer bottles there was a lemon and a lime to add colour to the display.

I will post each of these two drawings at a later date as more work on them is completed.

Thank you for looking at my artwork.

ACEO - Snow Storm 1

I wanted to complete at least one painting today and I wanted work on this piece that I started a number of years ago (see posts on 23 Oct 2016 and 20 March 2017).

First I wet the paper slightly across the foreground and while it was drying I used French ultramarine blue and raw sienna for the foreground trees.
