ACEO - Changing Colours 1

I usually have a stack of watercolour paper cut to size for ACEO (2-1/2" x 3-1/2") in either 300lb., 140lb. and on rare occasions on 90lb. paper.

Sometimes they are taken from sections of paintings that didn't quite work and other times from paper where I am experimenting with a new colour or a new technique.

This one was from a strip of paper where I was testing a new colour to see how it would work with the other colours in my palette.

I lightly sketched in a couple of main trees and a horizon line.

With French ultramarine blue and a touch of burnt sienna I painted in the sky and the water of the lake.

I added more burnt sienna to the sky colour and put in the rocks on the distant shore and then the main tree trunks in the foreground.

Using various mixes of alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, raw sienna, aureolin, new gamboge, cadmium red and cadmium yellow I painted in the background deciduous trees and the bushes and grasses in the foreground.

Lastly, using combinations of Antwerp blue, raw sienna and new gamboge I put the needles onto the pine trees.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

She-Ra

Last night my dog She-Ra passed away quietly in her sleep at age 14.

I found her this morning lying beside my car as though waiting to greet me and escort me to the barn as she always did every morning. Unfortunately for me her faithful, loyal and loving spirit had already crossed over to the other side.

We will bury her later today under the elm tree at the back of the barn where she will join all my other animals who have found their final resting place in a sheltered corner of a peaceful pasture.

She may not be here in body any more, but I know her spirit will continue to roam freely as she always did.

She will be sorely missed.

Last Day of All Member Show at Art on Kent

Today is a bright and sunny day that is going to become hot, humid and hazy. It is changing back to hot summer weather from the below normal temperatures we have had for the last couple of weeks.

For most of the day I will be sitting at Art on Kent in Lindsay, Ontario as it is the last day of the All Members' Show and I will be taking my paintings home.

It was a busy day in the Gallery with a number of artists bringing in work for the upcoming photography show.

We also had a fair number of people coming in to see the current show before it comes down.

Various gift items gift items were sold including calendars, earrings and cards.

I had brought with me a number of things to work on while I spent the double shift from 11am-3pm there.

But with it being as busy as it was today all I managed to do was get everything set out and I didn't even get to do any painting.

When I return home I can start framing up the three paintings I am going to take to the upcoming show at KAGS called Figuratively Speaking.

Thank you for coming to look at my blog and I hope you will return often.

Wanna Play? - A Work in Progress

I had some time and wanted to work on this painting that I had started during a Still Life class at the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio (see post on 27 March 2014).

I will post this painting at a later date as more work is completed on the stuffed toys.

Thank you for looking at my artwork.

Koi 5 and 6 - Two Works in Progress

Today I did another fourteen sketches of koi for the painting called Koi Pond that I had started as an abstract showing movement in a class I took in the spring (see post on 21 May 2014).

I think I now have enough sketches of koi on tracing paper in various sizes and positions that my next step is to cut them out and place them onto the photocopies of the background.

Koi 5

Once I am happy with their placement on the photocopy I will tape them into place and after doing all four I know in which direction the panel should go and at that point I will have the sketches enlarged to the size to fit on the panel.

Koi 6

As usual I took two of the sketches and transferred them onto smaller pieces of watercolour paper which I will post at a later date once they have been painted.
