Country Sunrise - A Work in Progress

This is a painting I started in a workshop with John David Anderson earlier this year (see posting on 28 October 2013).

I used a mixture of Hansa yellow and white and added a little more light into the sunlit side of the sky. Next I put in the background tree line in with a mix of mauve and blues. The background fields were painted in with a mixture of blue, yellow and burnt sienna.

Next I darkened the shadow on the building and added the shadow to the chimneys then I lightened the sunlit wall and darkened and brightened the roof of the house.














Into the foreground I put the grasses of the pasture using various mixes of green, cadmium yellow, burnt sienna and raw sienna. In the process I covered up most of the draft horse that I had drawn in there originally. Now that most of the under paint is completed I will put the draft horses back into the painting at once I decide how many and where to place them.

I will post this painting at a later date once more of it has been completed.

Autumn Day - A Work in Progress

This is a painting I started earlier this year in a workshop with John David Anderson held at KAGS (see posting 27 October 2013).

I painted the roof with a warm neutral colour and added a warm colour to the sunlit side of the building.












 
After standing back and looking at the painting I realized that the buildings were not in perspective. I have fixed the angle of the roof and windows; then straightened up some of the verticals on the buildings.

I will post this painting at a later date after more work on it has been completed.

Long Shadows 1-3

Looking out the window at the long cast shadows from the trees running across the snow on the front lawn I thought I should take some photographs and do a few sketches as reference drawing for future paintings.

For the first drawing I used the two maple trees on either side of the front gate and ran the shadows along the snow.

For the second drawing I used the maple tree and some of the young beech trees along the north section of the track.

For my last drawing I did the house from the road side of the front gate looking down the driveway toward the house.

Fallen Snow

Today as I was going through a box I came across a number of acrylic paintings that I started many years ago when I began painting in acrylic.

There was very little to do to complete this painting. I put in the shadows across the snow in the field with a mix of ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

I added more burnt sienna to the mix and put some snow covered rocks into the foreground.

Using titanium white I added in a birch tree to the foreground.

Oil Lamp 1 and 2

Today I was at the Still Life class at KAGS and the theme was Lamps and Clocks.

There were a wide variety of clocks and lamps, everything from pocket watches to ornate mantle clocks, as well as a candelabra, silver candlesticks, oil lamps and lanterns.

There were two different glass oil lamps with various herbs, flowers and leaves in the oil with the wick winding its way through them. I decided to do a drawing of each of both.

The first one was shorter than the other, with flat sides and triangular in shape.

Its base was of thick glass which showed the lovely pale blue green colour of the glass as the light passed through.

The second one was much taller with the glass slightly curved on one of its three sides.

It had twine wound around the top of the neck of the glass and a green ribbon tied in a bow at the base of the twine.

Cold Day 1 and 2

This morning I woke up to 4" (10.2 cm) of snow on the ground. There is also more snow in the forecast, but at least it is a little warmer outside 22F (-5.6C) and the wind has died down.

I thought I would do a couple of drawings of the scenery as I looked out my kitchen window at the infield of the track.

By the entryway to the track by the barn, there are a couple of young maple trees on the bank which rises above the last turn.

It is here where the track is at its lowest level in between both sides of the land.

As you head into the first turn everything levels out and is almost even with the ground as you head into the backstretch.

Cold Day 1

Partway along the backstretch the track becomes higher than the ground and by the time you are at the second turn the infield side it is about 8' (2.4m) higher and on the roadside there is a 40' (12.2m) drop.

Midway between the second and third turn the track levels out again and after the third turn the track once again becomes higher than the land on either side, although nowhere near as much as on the backside of the track.

On the driveway side it is about 6' (1.8m) and on the infield side it is less than 2' (.6m) before it levels out in front of the house.

Just past the sentimental light the track starts to once again be lower than the banks on either side heading into the fourth turn.
