Gathering Storm - A Work in Progress

This is a painting I started a number of years ago (see post on 29 May 2010).

I didn't have a lot of time to paint today as I had to get my paintings together for the Shades of Summer Show and later go to St. Matthews' Church to help set up the grids and tables.














I painted in the water using raw sienna, French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna and set it aside to dry.

I will post this painting at a later date once more work on it has been completed.

Study in Red 1 and 2 - Two Works in Progress

Earlier today I went grocery shopping and after putting away the produce I noticed that the basket on the counter that I put the fresh fruit into had a red and white gingham cloth in the bottom and most of the fruit were in it were in various shades of red.

The sunlit was coming in the kitchen window so I moved the basket onto the kitchen table and added a couple of tomatoes to the arrangement and started to draw the still life.

After doing the sketch for the first one I changed the angle of the painting as the natural light coming through the window had changed and I did a second sketch.

 I will post each of these still life paintings as I start to add colour into the sketches.

A Different Kind of Painting

This kind of painting is a little different than what I usually post.

With living on the top of a hill the house takes a beating from the elements and it seems that about every eight to ten years it needs to be repainted.















Choices needed to be made, what colour for the building and what colour for the trim as well as what would go with the brown roof that was already on the house that I had no intention of replacing for at least another 15 years.

We purchased 5 gallons of white for the trim. White was chosen as it would go with most colours and Ron started to strip the old paint off the building while I taped a multitude of different colours to the side of the porch to decide on which one we could agree.















Finally we decided on a colour called "Sweet Success" and I got one gallon of the paint and as a test we painted the porch which would give us a good idea if it was a colour we could both live with for the next ten years.

We kind of like the way it looks. So tomorrow I will pick up another 16 gallons of paint and as we have time we will work on painting the house.

Country Evening - A Work in Progress

This is a painting I had started a couple of years ago (see post on 21 October 2011) and it still needed a little more work.

The first thing I did was to lighten the fence posts as they were far too dark and then lifted most of the reflections from the water.

While that area was drying I worked on the small building in the background on the right side and added another row of trees behind them.















There are still a number of things to be done to this piece before it is completed. I will post it again at a later date.

In the Shade I - A Work in Progress

I find it is enjoyable to watch my horses out in the pasture, which is why I often sketch them in the fields.

In the barn paddock there are a couple of large apple trees where often during the hottest part of the day the horses would gather to be out of the sun.














I started the drawing with a single horse in the shade of the trees and added some grasses around the base of them.

I will post this drawing at a later time once more work on it is completed.
