Windmill 1 - 3

Today was very busy day for me as first thing this morning I had to go to the Visitors' Centre in Algonquin Provincial Park to tear down the Nature's Palette show.

I then returned to Peterborough and picked up my painting at the Canadian Canoe Museum from the Peterborough in Portrait: Our Inclusive Community exhibit and fortunately I had an extra box as they threw the out.

Windmill 1

Even though I did a lot of running around today I also took the time to do a few quick sketches along the way to and from Algonquin Provincial Park.

Since the sun was coming up as I went past a farm that had a windmill silhouetted against the sky, I had to turn around and go back to do a quick sketch of the windmill standing alone in the field which, at a later date I make into a painting.

Windmill 2

Further along the way I came across another windmill in the field and the sun was much higher in the sky which changed the lighting on the windmill.

Once again I stopped and did another sketch of that windmill and took a number of photographs before continuing on my way.

On my way to Peterborough I came across a third windmill and did another sketch.

Windmill 3

Perhaps I will use these sketches to create the four seasons with windmills, or various times of day, who knows what I will do, but at least I will have captured a part of the past that is rapidly disappearing.

OSWOA - Magnetawan River 2

This was a painting I started the first time I went to Magnetawan (see posting on 28 October 2011) and finally got around to doing some work on it.

The hardest part was to put in the water and trying to make it look as though the water is running over top of some of the rocks that are just below the surface..

If you would like more information about OSWOA please go to my post on 12 March 2010.

The OSWOA shown here are all original watercolour painting using Artist quality Windsor & Newton paint on 300lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $40.00 and sold unframed.

ACEO - On the Reef 2

This painting was originally called Sponge Work C (see post on 29 Dec 2012) and I have changed the name to On the Reef 2.

I saw a small seahorse shape in the coral and painted it in using cadmium red. Using cadmium yellow, I put in the under paint on a Yellow Tang.

I washed cobalt blue into the top of the painting and set it aside to dry while I decided which kinds of fish to put throughout the coral.

I started by putting in a small school of five French grunts among the top of the plants. This was followed by adding in a rock beauty, a squirrelfish, another yellow tang and a small starfish.

From there using various mixtures of cadmium red, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, new gamboge, lemon yellow and French ultramarine blue, I put in various tube sponges, elk horn coral, sea fans and seaweed throughout the reef.

With a pale wash of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna I dulled down the bright white areas.

Using raw sienna, Antwerp blue and burnt sienna I put in some of the coral and vegetation on the sea floor.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 90lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

Tied Up 1 and 2

Today is the opening of the Monochrome and Black and White exhibit at KAGS.

Tied Up 1

While at the show I worked on a couple of drawings of boats tied up close to shore.

The first was of a single boat tied up in rough water.

Tied Up 2

The second drawing was of a number of boats tied up in fairly calm water.

The show runs through to 11 July 2013, I hope you will be able to come out and enjoy the show.

Galloping Pair

Today I wanted to finish this painting that I had started earlier this year (see posts on 15 January, 10 March and 19 May 2013).

Ii didn't take very long to paint the second horse once I decided what colour I wanted it to be; in this case a palomino with a greyed mane and tail.

This original 2" x 3-3/4" original watercolour when framed will be available for $60.00.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork.

Sand Bucket 1

Today I wanted to do something fairly simple and I started playing with shapes.

As my sketch began to develop it turned into a bucket lying on its side and I thought on a beach would be perfect.

I sketched in the sand and put in some seaweed into the foreground.

As a finishing touch I added in the lake or ocean behind the bucket and the wave running up onto the shore.
