OSWOA - Forest Stream 1

Today I am painting with the St. John's Art Group in Lakefield.

I wanted to complete this painting that I have been working on (see posts on 13 February 2011, 13 March, 13 August and 25 August 2016).

With a mix of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna I painted in the frozen stream running through the forest, darker in the front of the painting leaving some areas white for ice and snow.

Using various mixtures of alizarin crimson, new gamboge, raw sienna, burnt sienna, French ultramarine blue and cadmium yellow I put in the grasses and growies at the base of the trees and at the edge of the stream.













With French ultramarine blue and a touch of burnt sienna, I painted shows into the base of the growies.

Lastly I added a few more leaves into some of the trees with burnt sienna and alizarin crimson.

ACEO - Autumn Snow 1

I thought I would complete this painting that I started earlier this year (see posts on 29 February, 11 May and 31 July 2016).

I mixed a grey with French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

I started painting in the tree trunks and branches on the maple trees, doing the furthest away one first and then, I darkened the paint slightly for the closer trees.

Using raw sienna and burnt sienna I put in the background grasses.

With a sponge and various mixtures of cadmium red, cadmium yellow, alizarin crimson and new gamboge I put the leaves on the maple trees.

I used the same colours to scatter a few fallen leaves across the ground.

Next I mixed French ultramarine blue with a small amount of burnt sienna, keeping the colour more to the blue tone and put in the background shadows on the snow.

Lastly, I put in the foreground grasses and growies.

Moonlight Reflections 2

Today is the first day where the temperature has finally dropped below 86F (30C) to 81F (27C) and the humidity is below 104F (40C) to 86F (30C), which is a pleasant change although still fairly hot for September.

I wanted to work on a snow scene and I thought that one at night with a full moon in the sky would be a great idea.

As the drawing developed I had the moonlight reflected on the river and then added a small cottage nestled among a stand of pine trees.

I put some large pine trees on the right side.

Lastly I added some snow covered rocks into the foreground together with a few grasses and growies.

Millennium Park Waterfall I

Today we had rain in the early morning, but it had cleared out before I left to go painting with the KAGS Outdoor Painters' Group at Millennium Park in Peterborough.

It was going to be another very hot 90F (32C) and humid 104F (40C) day and the Park which is on the Otonabee River and has plenty of shade trees would be an ideal place to be outside drawing or painting.














After wandering through the part and taking lots of reference photographs I decided to do a drawing of the waterfalls in the park.

At lunchtime, we headed to the Silver Bean Café, which has a deck that overlooks the Otonabee River and enjoyed our lunches and beverages there. After lunch I decided to head home and relax.

Buckhorn Artists' Group Blog - Show Updates

Last Day of the Kawartha Art Festival

Today is the last day of the Kawartha Art Festival and the drive this morning to the show was sometimes challenging with a mix of clear areas and areas of dense fog.

I worked on a couple of pen and ink drawings on and off during the course of the day, beginning with this one (see posts on 27 July 2014, 21 March and 12 April 2016).

I decided that this drawing needed to be a little larger so I extended the rock on the right side as well as the tree line in the background.

I darkened the small rock and added more shadow to the base of the larger rock.

Coon Lake VII

This original 7" x 9” pen and ink drawing when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $50.00.

The Kawartha Art Festival

Today is the first day of the Kawartha Art Festival held in Fenelon Falls, Ontario.

I set up most of my exhibit yesterday, but with a couple more artists in the Agricultural Building this year the committee is strictly enforcing the 4'(1.2m) x 8' (1.8m) booth space unlike in previous years where we had a 4' (1.2m) x 10' (3m) booth.

With the reduced booth length I could not put in my table as there would be no room to be able to get in behind it, so instead of the table I set up my paint out chair in its place.

With the booth to the side I had the chair facing my table with the paintings, which turned out to be much better that sitting behind the table.

For the first time I had available matted and shrink wrapped original artwork in watercolour and in pen and ink.

This was in addition to the OSWOA and ACEO I usually have available for the public who wish to mat and frame the art to their preference.

I always look forward enjoy exhibiting at this show.

Special thanks go to Maud Skoog and her committee for doing so much for the artists and making this show such a pleasant experience.

Each year the show improves, getting bigger and better with high quality art in a wide variety of styles, media, price and subject matter available to the public.

One of the nice things this show started doing a couple of years ago for its 25th anniversary was giving tickets for the hourly draws to the public who make a donation at the gate.

They have the chance to win their choice of a $25.00 gift certificate toward the purchase of art from one of the exhibitors in the show or choosing from one of the prints donated by the artists.














They have continued this practice ever since and plan to continue with it for all future shows.
