Lakes 1-3

I was in the mood to doodle and thought I may as well do some drawings of scenes with water in them.

I thought for the first piece that I would like to have a lot of sky where the colours could be reflected into the water of the lake.

I put in my horizon line first, fairly low on the paper to leave plenty of room for the sky.

Lastly I put an island in the foreground on the right hand side with a couple of tall pines.

For the next sketch I wanted to have the water with a lot more movement.

First I put in the horizon line and then put in the large rock, followed by the lighthouse.

Lake 2

At the bottom put in the large waves crashing against the base of the rock and a few white caps in the distance.

For the third sketch I put in the horizon line first and then set down the leading wave on the shoreline.

Lastly, I put in some debris on the shore and indicated some waves on the surface of the lake.

Parking Lot Pine Tree

Today a few of us took a trip over to Gallery on the Lake in Buckhorn to draw some of the trees around the parking lot.

I chose to do this large pine tree which is at the back edge of the parking lot.

There were still patches of snow in the shadows beneath the trees.

To the left side of the large pine tree there was a small cluster of birch trees.

I added pine trees into the background.

Lastly, I put the rocks into the foreground and below the pines in the background, leaving the area in between as a roadway into the parking lot.

Pastel Colours 1 and 2

Today I was at KAGS in the afternoon drawing with the Outdoor Painters' Group.

I wanted to do a couple of small paintings with pastel colours in the sky.

On the first one I thought the sky should peek through the trees as an early morning scene.

I started with putting tall trees on each side of the paper, some slightly smaller trees were put in the background and tall weeds and growies in the foreground.

Pastel Colours 2

On the second one I wanted to have a large area of sky showing and framed by trees on each side of the painting.

Pastel Colours 1

Rather than having pines and cedars in this painting I wanted to have birch and maple trees, with an occasional coniferous tree.

It also needed tall grass and growies in the foreground.

Floral and Still Life Show

Today the Portrait class at KAGS was cancelled which due to the Gallery policy requires two people to sit the art show so Cindy and I were there together.

This made the afternoon go quickly as we discussed the upcoming shows, galleries we would like to visit and have an exhibit at in the future and the new art pieces we were painting.

I put in two paintings into this exhibit that had been shown at the Garden Show earlier this month.

We were pleased that a number of people came in to view the display which will run through to 05 May 2016.

If you have a chance please come out and view the show.

OSWOA - Barron Canyon 1

Today I was painting with the Buckhorn Tuesday Painting Group and I took a number of smaller paintings to work on including this one that I had started a while ago (see posts on 0 May 2014 and 23 October 2015).

I added more raw sienna into the left side of the canyon walls and a few more trees.

For the distant hills behind the canyon walls some pale greyed green trees were added to the top and I put in a very pale wash of raw sienna against the bottom of the rocks.

Next I washed some alizarin crimson over the rocks at the base of the right side rock wall, which was followed by a mix of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

The tree at the edge of the narrows was darkened and more were added along the top edges of the rocks at the base of the cliff with various mixtures of green.

With the greyed green from the background hills, the edges of the outcroppings on the cliffs were lightly indicated. Then trees were put on the tops of the outcrops and against the skyline at the top of the cliff.

The water was put in using layers of Antwerp blue, burnt sienna and French ultramarine blue.

I lightly drew in a canoe and it was painted with cadmium red and cadmium yellow.

The OSWOA shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $50.00 and sold unframed. SOLD

If you would like more information about OSWOA please go to my post on 12 March 2010.

ACEO - Sailboat 5 and 6

Today I am painting with the Lakefield Creative Art Guild and I wanted to complete these two paintings that I had started last year (see posts on 29 August, 30 October and 20 December 2015).

Working back and forth on both paintings, I first removed the miskit from the sailboats.

Next I indicated the top of the mast and put on the wind indicators with a dark mixture of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

I also painted in the cabin doorway, the cabin window and the peoples' heads with the dark mix.

Lightening the colour with water I put in the spar at the bottom of the sail, and the shadows on the cabin and deck.

For Sailboat 5 painted the hull red using alizarin crimson and for the shadowed area on the stern I add a touch of burnt sienna.

For Sailboat 6 I painted the hull blue using cobalt blue and for the shadowed area on the stern I add a touch of burnt sienna.

With pencil I lightly indicated the shadows on the sail.

Sailboat 5

While deciding which colours I would use to do the sails I painted in the outboard motors on the stern of each boat with burnt sienna and cobalt blue.

Using a mix of French ultramarine blue and cobalt blue I put the first wash of colour on the darkest areas of shadow on the sails.

I gradually built up the colour on the sails with each layer of colour until I was pleased with the way the sails looked.

Once the sails were completely dry I added numbers and letters on the sails.

Next I painted the life jackets with a mix of cadmium red and cadmium yellow.

Lastly I put in a few darker waves.

If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.

The ACEO shown here are all original watercolour paintings using Artist quality Winsor & Newton paint on 140lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. They are priced at $20.00 each and sold unframed.

Lone Pine 2

Today Christine took me to the hospital for a bone density scan so they can compare my results to the one I had taken in 2013.

While I was waiting, I did this drawing of the pine tree that I could see through the window.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork. I hope you will return often.
