ACEO - Rainy Day 2 and 3

Since we are having a rainy day today, it is fitting that I work on these paintings of rainy days that I have been working on for a while (see posts on 06 March 2013, 15 July and 08 August 2015).

With the wind warnings in effect our heat wave is coming to an end with the high today being 66F (18.9C) before the temperature drops to seasonal for tomorrow of 48F (8.3C).

Due to the high winds I was without power from 9:30a.m., when we returned from going out to have supper in Peterborough the power had been restored.

It didn't hurt that on the way home we purchased a new generator to replace the old one which had finally decided to give up the ghost.

I started with the birch trees and added the markings using mixtures of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

Using new gamboge and Antwerp blue I filled in the rest of the grass area and added a little French ultramarine blue for the darker grasses in the foreground.

I set the painting aside thinking it was complete.

Rainy Day 2

Then I added a shadow down the side of the birch trees with French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

Adding new gamboge and Antwerp blue to the shadow colour I added leaves on the birch trees using a sponge.

I started by lightly drawing in the background and adding a birch tree.

Next I completed the old, dead tree and added the markings on the birch.

I painted in the background grass and trees using the same colours as in the previous painting.

Lastly I ran a pale wash of burnt sienna down the trunk on the birch.

ACEO - Approaching Storm 1

I wanted top complete a painting today and I picked out this one that I had drawn earlier this year (see post on 20 April 2014).

I didn't want to use a lot of colours in this piece so I used a limited palette of burnt sienna, raw sienna and French ultramarine blue.

After wetting the paper, I used a grey made of burnt sienna and the blue and brushed in the underside of the clouds, leaving the tops of them the white of the paper.

I used the same cloud colour to put in the waves on the lake, leaving areas of light and dark.

With various mixtures of raw sienna and the blue I put in the pine trees on the islands and on the distant horizon line.

Using the green mix, I thinned the colour with water and brushed the pale green over the water of the lake.

I decided to use a small amount of alizarin crimson on the rocks of the island.

Autumn Storm 1-3

Today I thought I would do some sketches of stormy skies in an autumn landscape.

I went out onto the porch and set myself up on one of the chairs and started drawing some of the trees along the west fence line on the north side of the driveway.

This is where in the morning the rising sun touches the trees with light.

After the first one was completed I moved into another of the chairs on the porch and started the next drawing.

This one was further along the fence line almost to the north west corner of the front field, still along the road.

For this one I wanted more of the sky to show making it the focal point instead of it being mainly the trees.

For the last one I once again changed into another chair and did this drawing of the north fence line having a balance of trees against the sky.
