Abstract 45

This is the last technique we learned called a swipe pour in the Pour Your Heart Out workshop with Valerie Kent at the Cavan Art Gallery.

I used three different colours putting each one into separate cups, then adding Floetrol and water in all of them and adding from 1-3 drops of silicon.

In my first cup I used Mediterranean blue and added one drop of silicon.

In my second cup I used teal and added two drops of silicon and in my last cup I added three drops of silicon to silver paint.



















Each colour was poured onto the canvas in a loose circular coil shape much like a wave cresting.

Using a palette knife, putty knife or spatula spread the paint around and then roll the canvas slightly.

This original 2" x 2" acrylic painting and will be available with its own display easel for $25.00.

With the larger canvas raised up off the tray with a 3" (7'6cm) block the smaller canvases were placed under each of the edges to catch the paint as it dripped down.

As paint covered each of the small canvases I tried to remove them and replace them with a new canvas.

For the most part, other than making sure that the paint flowed over the edges of the canvas, there was very little work that needed to be done to create some interesting paintings.

Each of these canvases were set aside to dry as they were completed, with only the last canvas not having very much of the bright neon showing in the painting.

Creation VI

This is the fifth technique we learned and it is called a bottle bottom pour in the "Pour Your Heart Out" workshop with Valerie Kent at the Cavan Art Gallery.

First we mixed a little Floetrol into some white acrylic paint and put a thin layer across the canvas and set it aside to dry.

With three bright colours, in my case neon green, teal and Copenhagen blue, as well as black and white in individual containers, mixed with water to make them thin enough to pour easily.

We used the bottom 4" (10 cm) cut from a 2 litre (1.76 quarts) plastic bottle of (soda) pop and set it in the middle of the canvas, with the cut part on the canvas.



















Layer each of the colours one after another, in random order into the centre depression of the bottle bottom until the paint runs down onto the canvas.

Keep pouring the layers of' paint until it reaches all of the edges on the canvas and at this point carefully lift the bottle bottom off the canvas and set aside.

If the paint doesn't move into the centre area of canvas left by the bottle bottom, you can add a little of the paint into the empty space and move it around with a palette knife.

Creation VI is an original 12" x 12" acrylic painting and will be available for $250.00.

Abstract 38 and 39

This is the another technique we learned called "dipping" in the Pour Your Heart Out workshop with Valerie Kent at the Cavan Art Gallery.

This is another way of using up the excess acrylic paint, rather than wasting by throwing the paint away.



















Abstract 38

As the run off paint collects in the tray, canvas can be set down into the paint and then carefully lifted to create interesting designs.

In both of these pieces most of the other students in the class found shapes of fish. Can you see fish in these paintings, or do you see something different?



















Abstract 39

I found it to be an easy way of creating an interesting abstract painting and some of the others in the class added small amounts of pure paint to create different designs.

Each of these original 2" x 2" acrylic paintings and will be available with its own display easel for $25.00.

Creation V and Abstracts 36 and 37

This is the fourth technique we learned is called a ring pour in the "Pour Your Heart Out" workshop with Valerie Kent at the Cavan Art Gallery

For this piece, we painted the canvas black first and set it aside to dry before mixing six metallic paints and more black paint.

In a large cup we used gold paint mixed with just enough water so it flows and then added an equal amount of Floetrol and stirred it well.

To all the remaining colours; in my case silver, metallic emerald, metallic amethyst, metallic teal and black just enough water was added to make it fluid.



















Creation V

Into the large cup with the gold paint in it, silver paint was added first in circles, followed by the each of the rest of the metallic colours added in circles and lastly black was added in circles.

For the next layer of paints, the various metalllics were added beginning with amethyst, teal and emerald, followed by the silver and then black, once again all were poured into the gold base in circles.

A final layer was added in circles using only the metallics beginning with teal, emerald and amethyst.



















Abstract 36 SOLD

The paint from the gold cup mixture was poured in a circle over the canvas and rolled slightly before letting it move around on its own.

The run off paint was put onto one of the small canvases which was then set aside to dry.

Then the remaining paint left in the gold cup was poured over another of the small canvases and the paint was rolled around before being set aside to dry.

Creation IV and Abstract 35

This is the third technique we learned called a six cup flip pour in the "Pour Your Heart Out" workshop with Valerie Kent at the Cavan Art Gallery.

In this one we were told to choose three colours, one metallic colour and either black or white; with the one not chosen to be used with silicon added to under paint the canvas. Three of the colours were to have silicone added to them and the remaining three to have Floetrol added.

I chose to under paint the canvas with black and silicon, the yellow, teal and red had Floetrol added and the metallic amethyst, lilac and white had two drops of silicon added.

Once all the colours were mixed in separate cups, each cup was turned upside down in different areas onto the canvas, beginning with the ones with Floetrol.



















Creation IV

Once the paint started to ooze out from underneath the cups they were lifted off the canvas allowing the colours to move.

The colours with the Floetrol added will move a lot more than those with just the silicon added as the canvas was tipped and turned to have the paints run together.

As with the previous large canvas, I used a smaller canvas to capture the "run off" and added any remaining paint left from the cups onto this canvas and rolled the paint around on the surface until all the area was covered.

Creation III and Abstract 34

This is the second technique we learned called a dirty pour in the Pour Your Heart Out workshop with Valerie Kent at the Cavan Art Gallery.

In a large cup we mixed white paint with the same amount of Floetrol mixing it well.

With the three primary colours I added water to thin it slightly and without stirring any more I added 1 drop of silicone to the bright red paint.  To the teal paint I added 2 drops of silicone and three drops of silicone were added to the Copenhagen blue.

With the black only a small amount of water was added and the last colour mixed in a small cup was the gold paint with an equal amount of Floetrol.



















Creation III

Once all the colours in the smaller cups had been prepared they were added one after the other into the large cup with the white paint mix. Lastly straight white paint from the tube was added into the large cup.

With a Popsicle stick the paint mix was stirred no more than twice in an "S" shape.

The canvas was placed over the top of the cup and were flipped over and set on the table.

When the paint started to ooze out from under the cup, the cup was carefully lifted off the canvas. The paint was then rolled around on the canvas until the top and sides were covered and then set aside to dry.


















Abstract 34

Since there was some "run off" paint left I poured it onto a small canvas and then scraped any remaining paint left in the large cup onto the canvas as well and rolled the paint around until the top and sides were covered.

This one was also set aside to dry.

Fantasy Flowers

Today I took a class called "Pour Your Heart Out" with Valerie Kent at the Cavan Art Gallery in Cavan, Ontario.

Having tried poured acrylic painting earlier this year I knew how much left over paint there would be so I took along a dozen small 2" x 2" canvases to create some small poured paintings to eliminate wasting so much paint.

For the first painting we did is what called a "Puddle Pour" which can be more realistic as you have more control over the paint as it slides around on the canvas.

We were told to pick three colours and either white or black for the fourth one and I chose white and decided I would use the three primary colours. We mixed the paint together with equal parts of Floetrol.















We layered each of the colours in three different areas on the canvas.

I started in the first corner with my blue as the base, followed by yellow, red and lastly white. From there I went diagonally across the canvas and started with red, followed by blue, yellow and white.

For my last flower I went partway up the canvas and used white first followed by yellow red and blue.

Using a large straw I blew the paint across the canvas to form "petal" shapes. When I was pleased with the results I used the end of a Popsicle stick and indicated the flower stamens.

The final part of this painting I dropped light and dark green onto the canvas to create leaves, vines and stems by pushing the colour around with the Popsicle stick.

This original 11" x 14" poured acrylic painting when framed with be available for $175.00.

Creation

Today at the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio there is a poured acrylic demonstration and I brought along a canvas and paint to try my hand at doing this new type of painting.

After watching the demonstration, I primed the canvas with a little bit of pouring medium and white acrylic paint.

Next I mixed three colours for this swipe pour in different containers; Copenhagen Blue, Caribbean blue and silver. I mixed equal portions of the pouring medium to each of my colours and added three drops of silicon.



















I poured each colour onto the canvas in a circular motion, starting with the darkest colour and going to the lightest colour.

With a palette knife I spread the paint gently in a circular motion and then set it aside to dry.

This original 12" x 12" acrylic painting will be available for $250.00.
