Snow Scenes

It started off very cold 18F (-7.8C) with the wind chill this morning making it feel like 9F (-12.8C) as I headed down to the barn to do chores. Fortunately it is going to warm up to 27F (-2.7C) with the wind chill making it feel like 16F (-8.9C) and we are expected to receive more snow flurries.

I thought with more snow in the forecast I may as well do a couple of drawings of snow scenes with a building in them.















Moonlight 8

For the first one I thought a log cabin would be nice set in a snow covered field.

As I worked on the drawing, I added some smoke to the chimney and a fence in behind the cabin.

Lastly, I put a moon in behind the tall pine tree on the right side of the drawing.















Snowed In 1

For my second drawing I thought a barn would be nice set back behind a barbed wire fence.

I added some long grasses and growies poking out of the snow in the foreground.

Either of these drawings could be developed into paintings at a later time.

Fife Cabin

Yesterday the Outdoor Painters' Group were at Lang Pioneer Village and Museum hanging their show in the MacKelvie Gallery and after lunch I returned to the Village and started to take a walk around and got as far as Fife Cabin.














With the temperature at 91F (31C) and the humidity making it feel like 95F (35C) I stopped there and blocked in a quick sketch of the cabin before leaving the Village and heading home.

Today I worked on completing the drawing of the cabin and added in the fire pit, a couple of pioneer women and a few free range chickens.

Cabin Memories I

It is another hot 86F (30C) and very humid 102F (39C) day.

I thought I would work on a snow scene today instead of something from the Caribbean so I chose this painting that I had worked on earlier this year (see post on 08 February 2014).














I added trees to the distant shoreline on the right side of the lake, some shadows to the cabin and to complete the drawing I added some dead grasses and growies to the shoreline.

This original 3-1/4" x 6-1/4” pen and ink when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $25.00.

Cabin Memories I - A Work in Progress

This is a fairly simple sketch of a log cabin on the edge of a lake.

The basic pieces have been inked in and I have to decide on the light source and what more it needs in the foreground.













I will post this drawing at a later date once it has been completed.

Snowed In - A Work in Progress

It has been snowing all night and will continue to snow all day today and we are to get another 8" (20 cm).

I thought it fitting to paint something with a lot of heavy wet packing snow in it. This is the kind of snow that clings to the branches of the trees and weighs them down; with enough of this type of snow on them the branches can often break under the weight.

I have removed the masking from the foreground snow covered trees and have almost finished one of them. The shadows still need to be greyed more as everything is just too blue.

I will post this painting at a later date when I have finished more of the pines.
