Woodland Nymph - A Work in Progress

I pulled out this drawing that I had started in the late 80's. I had set it aside because I had to make changes to the little girl in the drawing.

I wasn't totally happy with the nose; it was a little "bulby" at the end and needed to be smoothed out.

I started with the top of the head to get rid of the flat top first, followed by adding strands of hair going across her forehead at the sides of her head and going across the ear.

The fingers of the hand needed more definition as well as the back of the hand and wrist.  I also added a few details to the elbow and defined the arm from the shoulder down.

I will post this drawing at a later date once more work on it has been completed.

Thank you for coming to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Back Forty III - A Work in Progress

I picked this one to work on today, I had started last year (see post on 25 June 2017) when we were out in the bulldog and going through the back fields and had a doe pop out from its hiding spot at the edge of the sugar bush.

I started by putting in the hay growing at the edge of the field.

Next, I started putting on the leaves on some of the bushes, but before I could get any further I had a long distance call that took up a fair amount of time.

I will post this drawing at a later date once I add more details onto the deer.

On the Lawn - A Work in Progress

We leave the Knoepfli Inn later today after breakfast and taking down the art show.

While waiting for breakfast I sat on the front porch and did this sketch of a wooden barrel with petunias in it and the Canadian flag blowing in the wind, along with a log reindeer ornament.

I haven't decided what I will put in behind the lawn ornaments, if anything.

I will post this drawing at a later date once it has been completed.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork.

White-Tailed Doe 1-5

Today is going to be a little cooler with the temperature going up to 80F (26.7C) and the humidity making it feel like 90F (32.2C) but it is July and we can expect it to be hot and humid for at least another couple of weeks before things start to cool down again.

While going out for a walk around the track beside the house with Kyora, we had an unexpected surprise. A deer came over the fence from across the road and stopped dead looking at the dog.

I was about 150' (45.7m) away and the doe was so intent on the dog that she never noticed me. Not even when I started calling the dog.

This time the dog ignored me and as the she went closer to the doe she charged toward Kyora and went to attack the dog with her front feet.

Fortunately Kyora decided retreat was the best course was the best course of action as I continued to call her and she came part way back to me.

She retained that thought for about two minutes before she decided to take another run at the doe.

The doe decided it was time to leave and jumped back over the fence, crossed the road and went back across my neighbour's fields.

Here are a couple of sketches I did of the doe, which I will probably use in paintings at a later date after I have completed the outline sketches.

Deer in the Shadows I - A Work in Progress

Nothing like starting a spring morning off with 32F (0C) temperatures and the wind chill making it feel like 23F (-5C) but, the sun is shining and that is a bonus.

It was bound to get a little warmer as the day progressed and I decided to go for a walk through the fields behind the barn.

As I was walking up the slight hill by the north fence line just before the coming to the opening in the fence leading into the middle field a doe came out from behind the trees and stopped in the opening looking around before moving out into the opening.

I quickly pulled the camera out and did manage to get a slightly blurred photograph of the deer just before she turned and bounded away across the middle field and out of sight.

I will post this sketch at a later date once more work on it had been completed.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Deer in the Shadows - A Work in Progress

This morning as I was going over to my friend Heather's house to drop off her Christmas gifts now that she was back home from celebrating the holiday with her family in Toronto.

I glanced at the lake as I was driving by and at the edge was a doe with last year's fawn standing with her deciding if they were going to cross the ice covered lake.

I stopped the car and quickly took a photograph before opening the door and getting out just in case I spooked the deer and they disappeared before I could get closer.

It was a good thing that I did because as soon as I got out of the car she spotted me and that is exactly what happened. So it is a good thing I listen to the voices in my head some of the time.

I got back into the car and visited with Heather for a while before returning home and doing this little sketch.

I will post this piece at a later date once I have taken the time to develop the sketch and transfer it onto either watercolour paper or a canvas.

Forest King I

Hunting season has rolled around again this year and with all the different types of hunting, from bow, black powder and regular rifles the season runs from September through to December.

I did a pen and ink drawing of a does earlier this month (see posting 12 September 2012).

This is a buck that used to feed in the courtyard with the horses over the winter last year; but so far I haven't seen him on the property although there are scrap marks on some of the trees which may be his doing.

This original 5" x 7-1/2" pen and ink drawing when framed will be available for $145.00.

In the Forest I

I am slowly starting to get everything ready for my show up in Algonquin Park.

I finished this drawing earlier today. If I have the time I may develop this sketch into a painting in either watercolour or acrylic, otherwise it will have to wait until I have the opportunity to show there again.

This original 4-1/2" x 6-1/4" pen and ink sketch when framed will be available for $125.00.

Autumn Leaves

This original 9" x 13-1/2” framed watercolour is the result of being out riding last year after hunting season had closed.

It was in the late afternoon and as we entered into the bottom field we surprised a buck that had just come out from the maple bush.

He stood a few moments watching us, not quite sure what kind of animal we were, but when the dog caught up to us he quickly disappeared back into the trees.

Thank you to returning collector Mme. Cecile Desrochers of Ste-Ramon, Quebec on her purchase of this painting.
