This is the puppy clip that poodles are usually shown in from ages 6 months to 1 year. After that, they will have to change into either the Continental clip (see yesterday's post or the posting on 02 February 2010) or the English Saddle clip (see posting on 03 March 2010).

Show Stance

This is an original, 5" x 6” graphite pencil drawing, framed for $125.00.

Having bred, raised and shown both Standard and Miniature Poodles for many years, it is only fitting that I start with a drawing of them before going onto some of the other breeds.


















This is an adult groomed to perfection, ready to compete and hopefully go on to win Best in Show.

English Saddle Clip

This is an original 4-1/2" x 5-1/2” graphite pencil drawing, framed is available for $125.00 by contacting the artist.

This is the other acceptable clip for adult poodles competing in conformation classes in the show ring and is called the English Saddle clip.

















It differs from the Continental clip in that there is more of a pack left to protect the hind end than just hip poms and an additional bracelet on the upper hind leg.

Continental Clip

This is a framed 4-1/2" x 5-1/2” graphite pencil drawing for $125.00.

This is another in a series of Poodle clips and one of the two acceptable clips for an adult in the show ring.


















The origin of many of the poodle clips was for when they were used as retrievers. Some of the coat was clipped away so that the dog would not be pulled down by carrying the large amounts of coat that would become heavy when wet. The remaining areas of coat were to protect the vital areas such as the joints and the internal organs. Variations on the tail poms were so that a group of hunters could identify the individual dog when it was swimming in the water retrieving birds.

Puppy Clip

All poodles from the ages of six to twelve months can be exhibited in the conformation classes in either the puppy clip shown here or in either of the two adult patterns which will be shown in later postings.
