Since both the Outdoor Painters' Group and the Buckhorn Artists' Group will be applying to Algonquin Park to exhibit in the Visitor's Centre for next year I decided that in case we are accepted that I should work on some of the paintings I have started that would be suitable to exhibit there.
I am at the point on this painting where the time consuming part of putting in the cast shadows, applying the layers of wash over the branches and the details of the wood grain on the tree stump (see post on 08 July 2010) need to be completed.
I have darkened down the bottom edge of the trunk and on the upper branch to create the illusion of roundness as well as the curved shadow cast by the main trunk.
Some of the small wood grain details have been added but there is a lot more to do and I will post this painting at a later date once more is completed.
Thank you for looking at my artwork.

On Golden Pond - A Work in Progress
I will have to leave shortly to attend the opening of the Outdoor Painters' Group Art Show at KAGS.
This is a sketch I did on location earlier this month while up in Magnetawan. It is the view from the bench by the wishing well overlooking a quiet inlet.
I will post this painting after I find the reference photographs and add more details to the sketch before I put the under paint on the paper.
Hopefully some of you will be able to come out and see the show.

Evening Shadows - A Work in Progress
I like the multitude of colours that are reflected across snow surfaces. Especially in the early morning with the soft, subtle shades of pink, mauve and blue grey; as well as the stronger more dramatic oranges, and purples in the evening as the sun sets.
With this painting I have placed colour into the background having the warmer tones to the left and the cooler shades on the right side.
Using a purple made of alizarin crimson and cobalt blue I brushed in some of the main shadows for the tree trunks.
I will post this painting at a later date once more of it has been completed.

Magnetawan River 2 - A Work in Progress
This is another painting of the Magnetawan River I started while at the paint out at the Knopfli Inn at the beginning of the month.
I scraped out the foreground rocks and will post this painting at a later date once more of it has been completed.
Now, I am off to start hanging the Outdoor Painters' show at KAGS. The opening for this show is on 30 October 2011 from 1-4pm.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork. I hope you will return often.

ACEO - All That's Left 1
This is another painting I had started while at Magnetawan. It is where a heron would often come in and land on the remains of a tree that had fallen into the water.
If you would like more information about ACEO please go to my post on 11 March 2010.
The ACEO shown here is an original watercolour painting using Artist quality Windsor & Newton paint on 300lb. Arches 100% rag, acid free watercolour paper. It is priced at $20.00 and sold unframed.

Porcelain Plant - A Work in Progress
Today we had Sharon Taylor as the guest artist for the Buckhorn Artists' Group.
We worked on paintings of various fruits, vegetables and plants. I chose the porcelain plant because of its bright and colourful berries. Using watercolour for the background and plants, and then coming back in with black ink to add details.
This painting still needs a lot of work and I will post it once it is completed.

Autumn Woodland - A Work in Progress
This is one of the scenes I came across while driving on highway 121 on the way up north to visit with friends. Fortunately my husband is very patient and will stop so I can sketch and take reference photographs.
After we arrived at our destination, the men went out to the workshop to tinker on some new project that needed fixing, while Carol and I worked on new paintings.
This is the under painting from my sketch and photographs. I will post it at a later date once more of it is finished.

Autumn Splendour - A Work in Progress
There is nothing like hiking along a new trail through the forest on a crisp autumn day and coming across something unexpected. In this case the path led to a small waterfall and brook coursing its way down the steep hill.
I stopped and made a quick sketch and took a number of reference photographs before continuing on the trail which eventually turned away from the brook and led back to our original starting point.
Later that day when I returned home I put in the under painting of the scene while it was still fresh in my memory.
I will post this painting at a later date once more if it has been completed.

Country Evening - A Work in Progress
This is the time of the year when all the autumn colours are in full glory. Add to that a brilliant sunset and it is hard to believe that nature can offer so much for us to enjoy.
This painting is almost finished. It just needs a little more definition added to the background trees, some growies and in the foreground and some wire on the fence posts.
I will post the painting at a later date when it is completed.

Sea Fans - A Work in Progress
This will be one of those fun to do paintings where many unexpected things can happen.
I mixed up individual pools of cobalt blue, aureolin and alizarin crimson, then using a large sea sponge soaked with water; I rolled it around on a dry sheet of paper.
I poured each of the three primary colours over the wet areas on the paper and rolled them around a little to let the colours mix together on their own.
Then I sprinkled some salt into the wet paint and set it aside to dry.
When I returned, I could see it things that looked a lot like coral and with the vertical column on the right side of the painting I think I will make this into the forecastle of an underwater wreck and add some reef fish to the painting to create more interest (see postings on 18 and 19 February 2010).

Strumming - A Work in Progress
Today my daughter, Christine was the model for the Portrait Group at KAGS.
She brought in a number of different things to wear and it was decided that she would be a musician playing the guitar.
This is a partially finished painting of her. I will post it at a later date once it has been completed.

Every day I try to spend some time working on either a painting or a sketch.
I may not have the time to complete a painting, but I do like to achieve something.
Today I painted in a morning sky, which when I have decided what I would like to paint into the foreground I will post it at a later date.

Autumn Forest 1 - A Work in Progress
The fall trees are still holding their beautiful glowing colours.
The hills at the back of the property on the far side of the Snelgrove Brook provide a stunning contrast to the greens of cedar and pine trees that border the marsh.
I started this painting outside while at the top of one of the middle fields.

Bonfire 1 - A Work in Progress
I was going through my unfinished paintings to take out the ones I would work on first and try to get finished for next year's show season.
I came across Campfire (see posting on 24 December 2010) and Coffee Pot (see posting on 25 December 2010) which would be ideal for a show in Algonquin Park, so I decided to attempt a bonfire on a small piece of paper and see how it worked out rather than work on paintings that were already started and make my mistakes on them.
I used various mixtures of French ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson and burnt sienna for the background to create a warm dark purple background that would provide a strong contrast to the yellow and orange flames.
I will post this painting at a later date once I have it completed.

Starting Out I
This is a quick sketch of an idea I had of team of draft horses heading out from the barn on a winter morning.
I will probably do a number of sketches before I am satisfied with one of them to do a larger more detailed drawing for a watercolour or an acrylic painting.
This is an original 3" x 5" pen and ink drawing and when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $25.00.

House on the Sea I
The leaves are changing colour and the air is getting cooler. It won't be long until there is snow on the ground.
I did this sketch when I was in Cuba a couple of years ago of a lovely house set on a point of land at the end of the beach. Today I finally finished inking it in and will just have to erase the pencil notations.
This original 5" x 9" framed pen and ink drawing is available for $165.00.

Today my daughter, Christine modeled for the Portrait Group at KAGS in her wedding dress.

Now I had better get going to Norwood where I will be judging the art show at the Norwood Fair.

Evening Light 1 - A Work in Progress
Before going to bed last night I did this quick painting of the Magnetawan River on the far side of the property, I will finish it at a later date.
Today was another bright and sunny day for our return journey.
The leaves were out in full glowing colours as we stopped at Ragged Falls first and had lunch, then onto the Visitor's Centre were there was a wonderful display of artwork of Algonquin Park.
After talking with a couple of the other Outdoor Painters I will check into having an exhibition there with the Group and work on creating paintings of the Park for a show.

Dawn Silhouette 3 - A Work in Progress
Before I went down to have breakfast I did a quick painting as the sun came up of the same big pine from last night.
I will post this painting at a later date once it is completed.
Lorraine and I decided to go out touring around the countryside, with our first stop being at Cellar Falls where I took a lot of photographs of the twin falls and did a couple of very rough sketches.
Then on to Magnetawan to get photographs of the St. George the Martyr Anglican Church which was built in 1880 and is probably one of the most uniquely constructed buildings in the area.
From there we took a wrong turn and ended up getting lost, although it was a beautiful scenic route and we did manage to make it back to the Koepnfli Inn in time for supper.
After the meal it was the custom to have a critique done on all the paintings that were completed over the course of the last three days.
Guess who had to do the critiquing? The work from the fourteen artists was incredible.
Thank you for coming to look at my artwork and I hope you will return often.

Hunter's Moon - A Work in Progress
Today was another overcast day with scattered showers but it did not stop us from going out, taking pictures and painting the area around the Knoepfli Inn.
After supper most of the Group met in our cabin as it had a fairly large living room and we had an enjoyable evening.
After the last person left, I spent some time out on the balcony. You could see the Magnetawan River and although the moon was in the first quarter I decided to paint the large pine with a full moon behind it and the reflections on the almost still water.

Going to Magnetawan
It was a rainy day as a number of the Outdoor Painters' Group headed out to Magnetawan for a four day paint out.
One of the bright spots of the trip was when we stopped at Tim Horton's in Minden to collect more of the Group. Across the road at a motel there were a number of antique cars in the lot.
Thank you for looking at my artwork.

I braved the rain and took pictures of them. The oldest was from 1924 and the newest from 1939.

We arrived at the Knoepfli Inn in the early afternoon and got settled in our cabins. I shared the big cabin with Christa and Carol.
Before supper I followed the trail that ran through the property and came across this scene and did the under painting for my small colour sketch.
I will post it at a later date when I have more of it completed.
