Blues Lines 2 and 3 -Two Works in Progress

These were two abstract paintings that I had started last year (see posts on 08 August 2012) and after looking at them with fresh eyes I decided that they would make underwater paintings.

I have changed the name of Blue Lines 2 to Angelfish 1 as the blue lines seemed to be a fish shape. I added an eye and some lips and indicated where I would paint in the fins.

Using mixtures of French ultramarine blue and Antwerp blue to indicate water and then using raw sienna with a touch of burnt sienna for the sandy bottom of the ocean.

Next I added some sea grass with various mixtures of the two blues and raw sienna, then I set this painting aside to dry while I think about what more it needs to complete the background.

Since I also had Blue Lines 3, I placed a piece of tracing paper over the painting and sketched in another underwater scene.














Sunken Logs 1

I changed the blue shape into the shadowed side of an underwater tree stump and added a fallen cedar tree.

After looking at it for a little while, I placed in a generic fish shape into the background. I will have to decide what kind of fish it needs to be and if I just want the one fish. I think changing its name to Sunken Logs 1 is appropriate.

I will post both these paintings at a later date once more work on them is completed.

Hunter Head Study

Earlier this month I was at a local horse show sketching some of the horses that were being exhibited. This is another of the sketches I was working on while enjoying the show.

Grey Sky F-J - Five Works in Progress

Today I decided to cut up some watercolour paper in the size of 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" for ACEO. Once I had cut a dozen pieces to size it was time to start painting.

For the first one I used almost equal parts of French ultramarine blue with burnt sienna and washed the sky in for a pale neutral grey.

Adding a little more burnt sienna to the grey mixture I made a warm grey and used this colour on the next four paintings.

I did some pieces vertically using different washes of the grey mixture and painting it in with streaks of colour. Lighter and darker mixtures of the two colours were used to give different tones to the skies.

Rocky Shore 1 - A Work in Progress

Going through some old files I came across this piece that I had started quite a while ago. Unfortunately I didn't think to take a photograph of it before I started painting.

The yellow tones in the sky were already painted in and a lot of shapes against the sky and the rock shapes were blobs of colour.

I started with the "blobs" that would eventually become rocks by lifting some of the colour to create highlights and then added darks for the shadows and left the colour that was in place for the middle tone.

Using the colour of the rock shadows I painted in a few lines to create the illusion of water and the remaining colour looks like reflections.

There were a few pencil lines that I couldn't remove so I lifted the colour from the dark shape below them and created three birches.

Next I added some green foliage behind some of the larger rocks and with a darker green mixture made a pine tree.

I was mixing a dark to finish the birches when I dropped my brush onto the painting. That told me it was time to quit.

When I next post this painting at a later date I think I will turn the mess in the corner into autumn leaves and add some reds, oranges and yellow into the background trees.

OSWOA - Winter Forest 1

This painting was originally called Blue Sky 1 (see post on 22 December 2011) and I have changed the name to Winter Forest 1

I lightly indicated in pencil, where I would like to have the larger trees and where the distant land would be placed.














With a pale mixture of French ultramarine blue, Antwerp blue and raw sienna I put in the distant evergreen trees.

With various mixtures of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna I started painting in the tree trunks, keeping the more distant trees lighter and less detailed and having the closer ones darker with more bark texture.













Once all the trees had been painted into the picture I started putting in the various grasses and growies around the base of the trees and in a few areas in the snow.

For this I used mixes of raw sienna, burnt sienna, alizarin crimson and French ultramarine blue.

ACEO - Evening Storm 1

It is another hot 92F (33.3C) and sunny day. This evening we had a nice sunset which I tried to capture it with my paint.

I started with cobalt blue for the sky leaving areas of white for the clouds. Next I added a little burnt sienna to the blue and put in some of the darker clouds along the horizon line and in between the higher and lower clouds.

With various mixtures of aureolin, new gamboge, burnt sienna and raw sienna I put in some of the reflected from the setting sun. I put in a thin line of new gamboge below the bottom line of clouds.














Using a wash of new gamboge I put the under paint into the water and while it was drying I lightly sketched in the islands and trees.

With a mix of cobalt blue and burnt sienna, I brushed in the water leaving some areas untouched allowing the white of the paper and the new gamboge to show in the water.

Next I made various greens with mixtures of French ultramarine blue, cobalt blue, raw sienna, new gamboge and lemon yellow and painted the trees onto the distant shoreline and on the islands.















Lastly I made a dark of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna and painted the rocks at the base of the islands.

Old Cottage II - A Work in Progress

Today is slightly cooler than yesterday with the temperature at 86F (30C) and with the humidity feeling like 99F (87C).

I decided to spend the afternoon inside where it is a lot cooler and do a little more work on the sketches I did yesterday.















This one is of the garage beside the house and a play house for her grandchildren.

I will post this painting at a later date once it has been completed.
