Last Day of the Summer Sizzle Show at KAGS

I am sitting at the Summer Sizzle Show at KAGS which ends today. The Gallery will then shut down for the next three weeks for renovations.

Hopefully during the next three weeks I will have more time to go with the Outdoor Painters' Group and paint on location.

Cows 6-8 - Three Works in Progress

Yesterday we were fortunate that we had the thunderstorms in the afternoon and afterward the day turned bright and sunny with a nice breeze even with the temperatures hovering around 84F (29C) and the humidity making it feel like 102F (39C) so last night Ron and I had a wonderful time in Peterborough at Del Crary Park for the Canada Day celebration.

Cow 6

We were entertained by Motor City Music, a nine piece Motown Tribute Band that played many of the most popular dance hits of the Motown era and did them extremely well. Needless to say we were up and dancing most of the night and afterward enjoyed the fireworks display sponsored by the area's Rotary Clubs.

Today I wanted to post these sketches from the weekend when I took in my paintings to Art on Kent for the Annual All Members' Show which will open on 05 July 2014 from 1-3pm.

While I was sitting the Gallery I worked on the drawings for another three cow paintings before taking my paintings home from the Exchange show with Gallery in the Attic.

I will post each painting at a later date as more work on them is completed.

Thank you for looking at my artwork.

Orange Evening

Each day the heat and humidity continue to increase and today is no exception with the temperature at 86F (30C) and the humidity making it feel like 102F (39C).

I thought instead of working outside in the garden that I would take my paints and find a place by one of the lakes and paint.

Since I didn't want to travel very far, I went up Highway 28 until I came to the Trent-Severn Waterway Lock 28 - Burleigh Falls. I parked the car in the lot and took my art supplies and chair and set myself up along the far end of the concrete edge of the boat launch out of the way of people using the launch.

I could look out across Lovesick Lake and see the Buckhorn shoreline to my right and Ruba Island across the channel on the left.

I lightly indicated the horizon line and the land on each side of the channel with a pencil. It was at this point that I decided I would make it an evening scene.

I wet the paper thoroughly, then washed in the sky and the water and using mixtures of burnt sienna, raw sienna and alizarin crimson. While the paper was still damp, I added French ultramodern blue to the sky colours and put in the evening clouds into the sky and their reflections into the water.

It didn't take long for the paper to dry completely and I mixed burnt sienna with a little bit of the blue and painted in Ruba Island on the left side and the reflections into the water below the rocky shoreline.

This was followed by painting the closer shore using a darker mixture of the same two colours and adding more details to the trees, rocky shoreline and into the reflections on the lake.

This original 11" x 15" watercolour painting when framed will be available for $295.00. SOLD

Ruffed Grouse

It is another hot and humid day with the actual temperature reaching a high of 81F (27.2C) feels like 97F (36.1C).

I didn't feel like doing too much outside so I worked on this drawing of a Ruffed Grouse that I had started last year (see post on 26 December 2014).

Fortunately, I had a lot of reference photographs to get the detail correct on the grouse.

One thing I learned was that if the band on the tail of a Ruffed Grouse is unbroken it is a male.

This original 9" x 12" graphite pencil drawing when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $75.00.

Barn III

Today is another bright, sunny and hot 82F (28C) day and with the humidity it feels like 93F (34C).

I thought that I would develop this sketch that I did a few years ago (see post on 25 September 2013) into a more finished drawing.

Next I started on the barn by adding the tin onto the roof, windows on the long side of the barn and a sliding door and a door to the mow on the front of the barn.

I removed the fence that was in front of the barn and then worked on the large rocks in the foreground, filled out the pine tree and added a roadway to the barn.

I put grasses at the edges of the road and rocks and the added a fence along the edge of the field.

Lastly I added a farm house and some trees on top of the hill in the distance.

This original 5-1/4" x 9” graphite pencil drawing when matted and shrink wrapped will be available for $40.00.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and enjoy the artwork. I hope you will return often.

Oriental Pottery

It is another hot day 77F (25C) but with the humidity feels like 84F (29C).

I wanted to do more work on this drawing (see post on 06 February 2014) that I had started in the still life class at KAGS.

I tightened up the drawing and added the pattern details on the vase and pottery jar.

I made a few changes to the composition by enlarging the clay tea pot and shifting its position slightly.

Thank you for looking at my artwork.
