Knoepfli Inn - A Work in Progress

Today I did a little more work on this painting of the Knoepfli Inn that I had started while in Magnetawan earlier this month (see posting on 03 October 2013).

Using burnt sienna I washed in the base colour of the tile roof on the Inn.

Adding a little French ultramarine blue to the burnt sienna wash the roadway was indicated.














Then using various mixtures of Antwerp blue and raw sienna the sunlit and shadowed grass on the lawn was painted.

Some of the dried and dead grass around the base of the foreground tree was painted using raw sienna and burnt sienna.

I will post this painting at a later date as more of it has been completed.

Pottery I - A Work in Progress

Today was a very long and busy day at the Kawartha Artists' Gallery which I opened at 8:30am for the Still Life Group.

We set up a pottery display for the class which had some very interesting pieces and I particularly liked the way the woven cloth folded and created interesting patterns and shadows.

After lunch I painted with the Outdoor Painters' Group and continued to work on the drawing which is almost completed. I will post this painting at a later date once more work on it has been completed.














Then I waited until the current show had been taken down and it was time to take in the paintings for the upcoming show "Motion in Stillness".

Finally at 7:00pm I locked up the Gallery and headed home. Tomorrow shall be another busy day with more take in and then hanging the show.

On Golden Pond - A Work in Progress

Today I put in some of the under painting in for this piece (see postings on 30 October 2011 and 08 October 2013).

The sky was painted using a wash of cobalt blue deep leaving some lighter areas just above the distant hills. A darker wash of the same blue was used to paint the water leaving a few lighter areas. As the water area was drying a little burnt sienna was brushed below where the distant hills will be and below the middle ground.

Using light red and raw sienna to create a warm glow of colour for the distant hills, which for the most part will be covered up behind the dark greens of the pines and cedars in the middle ground.

Raw sienna was put into the middle ground and then a pale wash of burnt sienna was put over top of that while it was still wet for the middle ground.

I will post this painting at a later date once I put in the dark greens and remove the masking fluid.

Quilt of Hope

This is the completed Quilt of Hope and it is currently hanging in the Kawartha Artists' Gallery and Studio.














Later this week it will be taken to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre where will be permanently displayed in the Mental Health Unit.

Flying Feet - A Work in Progress

We are back to seasonal temperatures for October with a bright and sunny day. The horses are enjoying the sun and racing about in the paddock, bucking and kicking as though in defiance of the approaching cold weather.














I did this quick sketch of Chi as she raced around the paddock.

This original 6" x 6-1/2" graphite pencil sketch will be available once it is matted and shrink wrapped for $40.00.

OSWOA - Maple Reflections 1

I wanted to paint today but didn't really have a lot of time before I would have to leave to meet with friends.

I pulled out this painting which had been called Blue Sky 4 that I had started last year (see post on 09 August 2012) and after I lightly drew in a few large trees with pencil changed the name to Maple Reflections 1.

With a mix of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna I indicate where the main tree trunk would be and some of the larger branches.

Using cadmium yellow and new gamboge I put the first layer  of colour over the tree trunk and branches on the main tree and the smaller tree to its right.

Next I added a little cadmium red to the yellow mix and put on the second layer of paint leaving some areas of the first layer untouched.

Starting on the larger tree on the left side of the painting and using a mix of lemon yellow and new gamboge for the lighter areas of leaves.

Cadmium yellow was added to the base colour for the next layer of darker leaves.

Burnt sienna was added to the mixture and used throughout the trees in the painting to unite them.

The tree trunks were filled in with burnt sienna and French ultramarine blue as were the shoreline and their reflections in the water.

The leaf colours were put in with vertical strokes of the various mixtures of colours.

Lastly, the grasses and growies at the base of the trees were put in using raw sienna, burnt sienna, cadmium yellow and new gamboge.

ACEO - April Showers 1

Today I had to take in my paintings for the Still Life and Objects Show at Art On Kent and sit at the gallery. The opening Reception for the new show is on 18 October from 6-7:30pm.

While I was at the show I worked this painting that I started earlier this year (see post on 18 July 2013) which was originally called Grey Sky G.

I started by drawing in the river so that I would have a guide for placing the trees on each bank.

Then I indicated the distant trees on the horizon line.

Once I put in the tree trunks it was time to start painting them with various mixtures of French ultramarine blue and burnt sienna to put on the bark and branches on the trees.

A raw sienna and Antwerp blue wash was used as a base colour for the grass on both sides of the river bank and a darker mix was applied with a sponge as some of the leaves.

French ultramarine blue was added to darken the green mix and the closer grasses were brushed in on both sides of the bank and then some of this colour was sponged in for the tree leaves.
