ACEO - Open Field 1

This is a painting I have worked on for a little while (see posts on 28 Oct 2012 and 29 March 2013) and wanted to complete it today.

First I painted in the hay field with a mix of raw sienna and burnt sienna, varying the colours throughout the field.

With green mixtures made of Antwerp blue, French ultramarine blue, new gamboge, cadmium yellow and raw sienna I painted in the trees along the far edge of the field.














In the foreground I painted in the tree trunks of the three pines with burnt sienna and French ultramarine blue and then added the needles with darker green mixes of the same colours used on the distant trees.

Lastly, I put in some stubble remaining from the mowed field with mixtures of burnt sienna, raw sienna, cadmium yellow and French ultramarine blue.

Reflections 4 - A Work in Progress

This is the second of the two water paintings we started with Neil Broadfoot (see post on 16 April 2013) last month.

Cobalt blue was used for the sky and water. While the blue was still wet the land and tree reflections were painted into the water. This makes it a lot easier to match the reflections with the trees and the land later which are more detailed and are able to be easier to control.













Once the paper had dried the land mass was painted to match the reflections, then the tree trunks were painted.

I will post this painting at a later date once more of it has been completed.

Take Time To... - A Work in Progress

I had started the drawing for this painting last year (see post on 17 February 2012).

Using a mix of French ultramarine blue and Antwerp blue I painted in the sky.

The background trees were painted first using greens made from French ultramarine blue, raw sienna and Antwerp blue.






















Then the pasture was brushed in and some areas where I would put more defined grasses in the foreground were indicated.

Once the paint was dry I removed the masking fluid.

I will post this painting at a later date once more of the painting has been completed.

Morning Lake - A Work in Progress

Today is the last day of the Gary Chapman workshop.

This is another early morning scene but in a long horizontal format. Once again we used a limited palette of three colours, in this instance Prussian blue, Cadmium red and raw sienna.








There are a lot more things to be added to this painting before it is complete and I will post it again at a later date.

Cascade - A Work in Progress

Today is the second day of the Gary Chapman workshop held out at Six Foot Bay in Buckhorn, Ontario.

Rather than working on the traditional watercolour paper this morning's piece was worked on watercolour canvas.















Again we worked with a limited palette of three colours; Antwerp blue, permanent rose, and Windsor yellow.

There are still a number of things to do before this painting is completed and I will post this piece at a later date.

Dawn Mist - A Work in Progress

Today is the first day of a three day workshop with Gary Chapman. The morning painting was of a sunrise on the lake with the mist rising.













Three colours were used in this painting; Antwerp blue, raw sienna and cadmium red. The under painting is in place and I will have to do more work on it before it is finished.

I will post this painting at a later date.

Lazy River 1-3 - Three Works in Progress

Today I am painting with the Buckhorn Tuesday Painting Group at St. Matthews Church.

I pulled out these three paintings that I had started quite a while ago (see post on 23 December 2011).

The background was a little on the wishy washy side so I decided I would try and have at least that completely finished today.

Using pure raw sienna, I applied a layer over the background trees.

Lazy River 1

This was done to each of the three paintings, being careful to leave the grass below the treeline untouched.

By the time the last painting had the raw sienna applied to the background hills the first painting was dry.

I mixed and orange of raw sienna, burnt sienna and a little alizarin crimson and painted in the slightly closer trees, being careful to allow some of the raw sienna to show at the top and in a few places throughout the background hills.

This was repeated on each of the paintings. Once again the first painting was dry and I was ready to add the next layer of colour onto the first painting.

I used the orange mix and added some cadmium red and added it into the background. 

The first panting had only a small amount of this colour leaving a lot of the background showing through.

In the second painting the background was closer so a little more of the last bright orange was added.

In the last painting I wanted more of the orange and placing it much like leaves on a tree.

I will post each of these paintings at a later date once more work on them has been completed.
