Five Boats - A Work in Progress

Today is the first day of the Doug Mays Workshop held in the Stone Room at Six Foot Bay Resort.

Our first exercise was to do a painting with water and boats. The reflections are an important part of the painting with the calm water.

I chose to do my painting with five boats of various colours, with the sunlight coming from the left side of the painting.

The background was put in using vertical strokes with mixtures of raw sienna, burnt sienna, Antwerp blue and cobalt blue.

The water is made with mixes of Anterp blue, cobalt blue, raw sienna and burnt sienna, being sure to leave some areas of white paper showing.

The boats are cadmium red, bright red, cerulean blue, cobalt blue, alizarin crimson, Antwerp blue and aureolin.

I will post this painting at a later date once the dark colours and the details have been added.

Thank you for looking at my artwork.

Trees

In almost every landscape painting you will find a tree of some sort.

Here I have a number of pen and ink paintings of trees.

Log is an original 2" x 4” pen and ink painting available matted and shrink wrapped for $20.00

It doesn't matter if it is a coniferous or deciduous tree, standing tall, or bent, broken or having fallen to the ground.

It may be a painting of only one or two trees, silhouetted against the sky.

Tree Trunk is an original 4-1/2"  x 4-1/2” matted and shrink wrapped pen and ink painting available for $40.00.

It could be of any season of the year as well, showing the yellow green leaves of spring, the bold greens of summer, the colourful autumn leaves or the bare branches of winter.

Dead Trees is an original 3" x 3” matted and shrink wrapped pen and ink painting available for $20.00.

Always remember that the trunk is the largest at its base and narrows as it gets higher.

Three of a Kind is an original 3" x 5” matted and shrink wrapped pen and ink painting available for $30.00.

OSWOA - Maple Tree 2 and 3

Today I was decided to continue to experiment with different blues and yellows for greens on maple tree leaves, using various reds as a shadow.

I started this exercise last year (see post on 04 July 2011) and hadn't found the time to continue with it.

I continue until I have used all the greens I can mix on my palette.

Quiet Reflection

This is a painting I have been working on (see postings on 19 August 2010 and 18 December 2011) for a little while. Today I finally had the time to be able to complete it.

I changed the shape of the canoe's bow and back as the lines that were there made it look more like a row boat than a canoe. I darkened the red with a touch of French ultramarine blue and painted the reflections into the water.

Next I painted the interior and the trim on the canoe and let it dry before I started to paint the canoeist.

First I used a little burnt sienna for the face and hands. Then using light red I put in the bright coloured life jacket. Next I painted the hair, then the blue jeans and lastly the denim shirt.

Using the same colours I put their reflections into the water.

Once this original 7" x 11-1/4" watercolour is framed it will be available for $225.00.

Congratulations to new collector One 2 One Hair Design of Peterborough, Ontario on their selection of Moonshine (see post on 12 May 2011).

Fast Water

I came across this painting which I had started a while ago (see post 11 August 10) and decided to work on it today.

Some of the rocks needed more definition, so I used that as my starting point.

When I was satisfied with the rocks I started into the water I added various mixtures of dark blue, blue green and yellow into the water trying to create the illusion of movement in the fast flowing river.

When the water was dry I used an exacto knife and picked out the white of the water as it splashed against the rocks.

This is an original 6-1/4" x 9-1/4” watercolour, framed and available for $225.00.
