Quiet Reflection

This is a painting I have been working on (see postings on 19 August 2010 and 18 December 2011) for a little while. Today I finally had the time to be able to complete it.

I changed the shape of the canoe's bow and back as the lines that were there made it look more like a row boat than a canoe. I darkened the red with a touch of French ultramarine blue and painted the reflections into the water.

Next I painted the interior and the trim on the canoe and let it dry before I started to paint the canoeist.

First I used a little burnt sienna for the face and hands. Then using light red I put in the bright coloured life jacket. Next I painted the hair, then the blue jeans and lastly the denim shirt.

Using the same colours I put their reflections into the water.

Once this original 7" x 11-1/4" watercolour is framed it will be available for $225.00.

Congratulations to new collector One 2 One Hair Design of Peterborough, Ontario on their selection of Moonshine (see post on 12 May 2011).

Fast Water

I came across this painting which I had started a while ago (see post 11 August 10) and decided to work on it today.

Some of the rocks needed more definition, so I used that as my starting point.

When I was satisfied with the rocks I started into the water I added various mixtures of dark blue, blue green and yellow into the water trying to create the illusion of movement in the fast flowing river.

When the water was dry I used an exacto knife and picked out the white of the water as it splashed against the rocks.

This is an original 6-1/4" x 9-1/4” watercolour, framed and available for $225.00.

Blue Haze 1

Today I did this little 4" x 6" OSWOA using just French ultramarine blue.

I washed in the sky then gradually added more pigment to the mixture as I brought each layer forward.

This original watercolour is available unframed for $30.00.

Roasting Marshmallows I

It won't be long now before the parks are open and we can go out camping.

One of the nicest things about camping is sitting around the open fire at night. The smell of the wood smoke and roasting marshmallows.

This is an original 3" x 5" matted and shrink wrapped, pen and ink drawing available for $30.00.

Dixon Cove Wreck I

On Friday I was at a workshop with Frances Ferdinands and this is one of two mixed media collages featuring wrecks I did using gel media and acrylic paint.

As you drive between French Harbour and Coxen Hole, the Capital of Roatan, which got its name from the pirate John Coxen who lived in Roatan from 1687 to 1697; you will come across Dixon Cove.

There you will see two ship wrecks visible from shore, their names are supposedly the Tulom & the Alexandria, but so far I haven’t found anything to substantiate that claim other than a mention of the names on a travel website.

Some of the locals I have spoken with claim that the wrecks were two separate incidents and one ship carried lumber and the other carried paint. Both ships caught fire and were abandoned, what remained of their cargos pillaged.

During an attempt to tow the ships out to sea, they broke free and came to rest in Dixon Cove where they have remained since the 1970’s.

This 8" x 10" mixed media painting is of one of the wrecks, which I have seen and photographed many times; when framed will be available for $150.00.

I will post the other beached wreck once it is completed.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog and look at the artwork.

Forest Trail I

Today I have been working on a number of pen and ink drawings, many of which will end up has future paintings.

I finished this one of two riders enjoying an afternoon ride through the York Region Forest, better known as the Vivian Forest.

It is an extensive stand of hard and softwood trees covering many acres (hectares) of land on the Oak Ridges Moraine in northern Whitchurch-Stouffville.

It is located between Highway 48 to the east, Vandorf Side Road to the south, Warden Avenue to the west and Davis Drive to the north.

This original 4" x 6" pen and ink drawing will be available framed for $125.00.
